Rebel Fenn Rau Question

By Boom Owl, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Does his Pilot Ability prevent the effected ship from spending Target Locks or just focus tokens?

I assume Target Locks count as tokens.

Yes, they do count as tokens. Note his ability only prevents you from spending tokens to modify dice. He doesn't stop you from spending tokens for other stuff, like firing a missile or torpedo.

Or my favorite salvaged astromech droid --Shorty!-- can spend the TL to reroll the defender's green dice. Fenn specifies that the targeted attacker can't modify its own dice using tokens, but Short isn't modifying her own ship's dice.

R4-B11.

Nickname taken from the De La Soul song "I Am I Be" where one of the guest voices says "I am Shorty, I be four-eleven." So clearly the droid is Shorty.

Add hotshot co-pilot and they have to spend that token for basically nothing.... its glorious!

Does that work? My impression is that it wouldn't.

I know that HSCP doesn't really do anything against an attacker with Accuracy Corrector or an attack from Snap Shot--the FAQ states that if you are prevented from modifying your dice, you don't have to spend the focus for HSCP. If Fenn shuts down your ability to spend a token to modify dice, wouldn't that also mean that HSCP does nothing?

Text: If the defender has Hotshot Co-pilot equipped, and the attacker cannot modify his dice such as from Snap Shot or after resolving Accuracy Corrector, the attacker is not able to spend a focus token, and therefore does not spend a focus token.

Fenn attacks, forces them to spend the focus, then friendly defends from the focus less ship and fenn prevents any other tokens

^this. fenn being ps9/11 is the key to this working

Yeah, that's the normal use of HSCP, and generally pretty handy on any PS 11.

However, what I replied to seemed to be about the pilot ability interaction. I may have misread their intention. I suppose that if an enemy ship was attacking a friendly one HSCP, and Fenn Rau used his pilot ability on that specific attacker, I think the attacker wouldn't need to spend a focus, indeed couldn't.

Correct. If Tenn uses his ability on them and they then shoot him hscp fails.

HSCP is kind of wasted in this use. When you use Fenn Rau, all token are prevented, no need to have one preemptively removed. Having HSCP is kind of useless on Fenn Rau Rebel...

I disagree.

Rebel Fenn Rau prevents them from spending tokens to modify their dice when attacking but does not prevent them from spending them when defending . At PS9 he should be shooting near the top of your list. If he has HSCP he's forcing the ship to spend its focus token to defend itself from a 2 attack dice primary shot, very useful if you're about to sink a PS9/PS8 Harpoon Missile shot into the ship from Nym next...

In short, Rebel Fenn Rau with HSCP and his ability in a list that wants to alpha strike without being obliterated first/in return is not a bad idea. If I am running a PS11 Quickdraw with Advanced Optics and have Target Locked one of your ships, not getting to spend my tokens to modify my Harpoon Missile strike could be most unfortunate. Follow that up with me not having a defensive focus against your Harpoon Missiles? Nasty.

It is also good against deadeye gunboats. You could essentially shoot at one to make them spend the focus, then use fenn's ability on the other gunboat (if there are multiple) to shut that down.

Don't forget though that the second deadeye gunboat can still FIRE the missile, it just has to rely on raw dice. It won't pack the same kind of punch, but you're still likely to end up Harpooned!
