Should i play the base game first, before adding all my expansions ?

By soulman, in Mansions of Madness

Hi all

I have the base game, and now at the weekend i got my copy of streets of Arkham. So now i have all the expansions, allowing me to add new items to the game itself. I have only played the first 2 missions of the basegame. The second mission in the alleys of innsmouth was great fun, and i failed and look to return for a second go soon.

My thoughts was that i play though the base game first with the base characters and then adds all the extras, but maybe i`m losing out by going so ?

Should i just click add and then play the base game and enjoy what riches that may spring forth ?

Your thoughts please...?

In the end it doesn't matter much, but one significant change for "escape from innsmouth" is that without expansions, you will always play the one map included (unlike other scenarios which have more maps), so if you want to give the exact same map a try, that's worth unticking every expansion. If you on the other hand want to mix up the map a bit, check "streets of arkham" at the very least.

Adding the expansions does allow variety for the initial scenarios but I would make sure that you enjoy and understand the game before you jump in. Of course I have bought everything while only playing a few of the scenarios but I enjoy the game!

It's really less of an issue than you might think. Adding the expansions just means you've got more map options and more monster options and such. Personally, I'd suggest just tossing 'em all in. With some games that adds complexity, but since the app deals with all that crap, it isn't the case with MOM. :)

One thing, though: Be sure to keep your room tiles sorted by expansion. I wrap a rubber band around each stack of mine. It's much easier to find the right room if you can go right to the correct stack to search.

i now sorted all the bits out,i gone from 8 investigators to 30...!!!

I just purchased the base game this weekend. I didn't opt for any of the expansions until I played the base game first. However, my daughter and I are very excited to dive into this after we read over the rules and watch a "how to.." video or two first.

When I played for the very first time, I turned off Recurring Nightmares and Suppressed Memories (of which I own both), just so I could play the first scenario in a 'straight of of the box' way for simplicity. This meant only having to get ready the one set of tiles, monsters and tokens for that first go.
