If he was, I missed it as well.

I'm pretty sure snap died in the opening scene with the bombers - there was a shot of him yelling something and then exploding. Unless that was some other stout bearded xwing pilot?

I'm not too optimistic about the other pilots though - unless they reappear in the next film or the comics, they could have died in the hangar explosion (RIP Tallie). Maybe Jess got sent off on another mission during the evacuation?

If snaps is dead. Nora will come with a vengeance.

They did actually show all the pilots in the hangar, and none of them were members of Black Squadron (other than Poe). And that guy wasn't Snap, he had a brown beard (Snap has a black beard).

For some reason, Snap and Jess disappear after the Battle of Starkiller Base. Not sure where they went. Maybe Poe Dameron Comics will fill us in sometime in the next two years.

Who knows how long that Fleet chase lasted. Heck that Canto Bait side story seemed to last for a week.

It lasted 18 hours, it is explicitly said in the film a number of times that the Resistance fleet only has enough fuel for 18 hours. It is something that hamstrings a few things, not to mention makes the whole 'chase' seem more like cops following a stolen vehicle until it runs out of gas instead of doing anything else.

Yet at least 2 days went by on Rey's planet. Oh yeah that's right a day could be 9 hours long on different planets.

I like the movie okay, but you can't ignore the fact that the pacing was just awful.

Excellent! Good eyes spotting that, I just assumed they were all cactus. Snap, Jess, etc probably all got sent off on some other recon mission moments before TLJ started. At least Poe still has his buddy Oddy around (RIP Ello)

Yea...time is really wonky when trying to deal with the galaxy and tons of planets with different orbits and rotations. I pity whoever ends up in the Republic/Empire/New Republic's logistics divisions and have to deal with that. "I need this by 3:00." "Okay, but your 3:00, my 3:00, or Coruscant's 3:00?"

It is a good thing they have hyperspace which ignores Relativity otherwise they would also have to account for time in flight which is different than time on planet, and depending on what the velocity of planet is they will also have different time dilations.

Haha! That is very true, "I shipped it out to you last week and it will show up to your place yesterday. Or rather my yesterday but your Tuesday." The only series/films that I've even seen try to deal with time dilation is Interstellar and Gunbuster. Granted, I like one of those far more than the others, *hint it is the one from the 80s*

Weirdly enough, that guy's not Oddy either. That guy's name is C'ai (pronounced KAI). If you listen carefully, Poe says his name at the end of the movie in the Falcon...

I'm deeming Jess Pava to have survived on the grounds that she isn't in it ;)

If she isn't on the falcon at the end of the movie she died in a transport or hosnian prime

He does. Episodes 3 through 8.

luke is in 4 star wars films, with a cameo in a 5th

Not shown in a transport, at the base or flying her x-wing and the actress is contracted for all three movies.

Well if she's not seen in this one, there's no reason to believe she'll be in the next one, contract or no contract.

Optimism? I’m hoping her part in the comic may render her important enough to make an appearance. And if there is one thing George RR Martin taught me, they aren’t dead until you’ve seen the body.

There is no reason to assume that any of the unaccounted for cast are dead. Heck, people are argueing Phasma is still alive despite falling into an inferno with a broken helmet.

Well, considering the way Rian Johnson threw out all of JJ Abrams' set ups, it wouldn't be surprising if JJ Abrams threw out everything Rian Johnson did. Snap and Jess survive because they had been sent on a secret mission, Holdo returns having survived in an escape pod, Luke returns as his body only left Ahch-To briefly to commune with the Force, Ackbar returns because he realised that IT'S A TRAP...

Disney seems to be pursuing a kind of scorched-earth policy, after they realised they couldn't match the original trilogy for plot or characters. They're now killing off or writing into obscurity every loved character of the past 40 years of the franchise. It's quite inexplicable financially, especially from a merchandising perspective. At the moment they're living off marketing and inertia, but sooner or later it'll end.

Spoiler Alert

I'm really hoping that Luke hasn't actually died, since Mark Hamill really made TLJ for me. He was on-point throughout the whole thing, only to be killed off by a mid-life crisis, apparently. It'd be nice to have Han and Leia, but CGI just isn't there yet.

My thoughts exactly. Mark Hamill's performance was the high point of TLJ for me. He loves the franchise and the characters as much as the fans do, and that shows in his work. I've said it elsewhere, I can understand writing Han out (because Harrison Ford probably made it a condition of his involvement) and Leia ( :( ) but to write Luke out, and in this manner... that's just unforgivable.

However @Astech - when in doubt, assume enemy action. I'm thinking Disney is doing this in part because they want to redo the Original Trilogy. Chewie, R2-D2, C-3P0, Boba Fett, Jabba and Vader are characters that could be around forever. New actors cast as young Han and young Lando will be hitting our screens in a couple of months, then we'll have an Obi Wan film (and what are the odds of a Young Luke and/or Young Leia appearing in it?).

Let's face it, A New Hope is 40 years old. Disney wants to build a Star Wars cinematic universe with films at least once a year. I predict that by 2020 we'll be hearing about the ensemble cast for Episode IV: A New Hope...

I'm actually kinda counting on Luke to be back in spirit form for EP9.

Soooo, who was that baby Padme named "Luke" and Obi Wan took to the Lars family in episode 3? Cameo's count too, so he is in 6.

7 counting Rogue One

Also Anakin was portrayed by 5 different actors (David Prowse, Hayden Christiansen, James Earl Jones, Jake Lloyd, Spencer Wilding) so its easier to have him in a lot of films spanning a long time.

The old characters needed to die. They've had their saga, and its time to let the new characters come into their own in the 3rd movie. Plus they're 'getting too old for this sort of thing' (to quote obi-wan). Seeing Han back in action in TFA was great for a couple of scenes, but if you stretch it out it just becomes sad and implausible (like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).

You missed Sebastian Shaw.

I'll agree with the old characters, mostly. Han and Luke's stories ended as well as they could, and they wouldn't really work as characters who aren't foreground. I wish we could have seen more of General Leia in 9, though. Leia's character really worked as a general and leader who doesn't need to be the center of the action.

If the opening sequence of Episode IX doesn't involve a long, lingering pan over Skellig Michael, followed by a flock (?) of Porgs flying excitedly into the air as a naked Mark Hamill materialises out of nowhere, gasping "...I need to warn them!", then I'm out.

I vote for 'polity' as the collective noun for Porgs

This has now become the most important subject in the thread.

[...] Leia could possibly live longer, but she will either not be mentioned in the next film, or handled with either a throw away line like Ackbar, or in the opening crawl. [...]

I read somewhere, so I have no idea if it's true, that they saved some of Leia's best lines for the next moving. Literally rewriting the script, taking most of her work out of this one and saving it for the next movie. If so, it may be more than a throw-a-way line. Let's hope.
