Solo: a star wars story, discussion thread

By RocketDarth, in X-Wing Off-Topic

So, TLJ has come and (for some fans) gone. It is now time to put the past behind us and look to the future! Solo: a star wars story hits theaters may 25, it is now time for fans to unite! And discuss, think, and wait (hopefully patiently!) What are your thoughts? The flood gates are open!

We're going to see the Kessel run, Han earn a life debt from a Wookiee, some high stakes Pazak between Hand and Lando, Han dropping his shipment at the first sign of an Imperial patrol...

And with new actors for Han and Lando, and probably a new actor in the Obi Wan film that follows, it'll only be a matter of time before Disney announces Rian Johnson's trilogy will be a remake of Episodes IV to VI...

it better not be!!!!

It's gonna suck we already who's alive in hope which means none of the action scenes will have any tension at all.

[Disney] A New Hope was 40 years ago. What better way to reinvigorate the franchise and sell it to a new generation of customers than by remaking it with modern technology, modern themes and a modern, diverse cast of characters?[/Disney]

New Han. New Lando. New Obi Wan. (probably with a new Luke in tow as well). C-3PO, R2-D2, Chewie and Vader can go on forever. Where else can this possibly be leading, if not for a reboot and shared Star Wars cinematic universe?

Search your feelings... you know it to be true.

Cast new actors? When we now can replecate their features with CGI? I think you overestimate their chances.

comparison of rogue one tarkin to ANH

Or maybe not...

I was actually fine with CGI Tarkin. His ruthless rivalry with Director Krennic was great. I know some found the CGI off-putting, but it never bothered me.

Plus I think Peter Cushing would have approved of rising from the grave...

Some can't see the uncanny valley, I always do and it's always off putting.

It didn't bother me much either. If the whole cast was CG... that would bother me.

It's not a case of not seeing it, it's a case of accepting it for what it is.

Indeed. It's not like we're talking Transofrmers or Avatar here. There's a big difference between using CGI to contribute to the movie and CGI actually being the entire movie. I found the entire Canto Bight sequence in The Last Jedi much more jarring than a single iconic character being recreated in CGI in Rogue One . I can happily look past the latter, the former was just out of place and over the top.

n terms of fitting in with the original trilogy, Rogue One was absolutely on point with it's set and character design.

you realize the entire Canto Bight sequence was practical effects and shot on location, except for the racing animals and the police speeders?

Yes, and it still looked like over the top, out of place garbage.

CGI Tarkin was realistic and appropriate in comparison.

This entire subplot was the biggest waste of cast and effects ever.

I was really not excited for this movie and still am not. But at least I found something interesting about this: It is the first movie to happen pretty far away from any good guy faction. We'll have some idealists for sure, but the major actors don't have ties to the alliance. That is potentialy interesting if well explored.

The Han Solo movie will be terrible. The most interesting things about Han, Chewie, Lando and the Falcon are all off screen. The exposition will ruin the in-universe mystery that makes those story points interesting.

The only way this movie could be worth paying money for is if everything spoiled up to this point was part of an elaborate misinformation campaign, and the movie is actually about aspects of Han we know nothing about.
