Can we get the designers to communicate with the playerbase more often?

To be clear, I’m not expecting a release. I just want some kind of announcement. It’s been 4 months since the last announcement. At least tell us what the missing SKU is.

We’ve been back-burnered. The drought is real.

Any interview in the last 6 months has just made the forums burn.

It doesn' seem valuable. the answers are very 'non answer, corporate salesman" in nature or just flat out so wildly wrong that it makes no sense in the context of the game we play.

Im still waiting for FFG to get off this "TLJ" kick and get back to the Trilogy that matters, ya know, the one with REAL tie fighters and T-65 x-wings, what do they think this game is? Battlefront II, lets mix eras! Oh look we are fighting a CIS Droid Control Carrier, DEPLOY LUKE SKYWALKER! THEY ARE BEING DEFENDED BY KYLO REN!

I'm gonna go with #2.

Drought? They just gave us 5 ships a month ago. We’ve had 8 ships in the last 7 months. How is that a drought? I’d be happy if we went another year without a new ship.

Once again, I'm talking about announcements, not releases. Maybe it just seems like a long time to me because I'm not interested in 4 of the 5 ships they just released, so I've been looking ahead for quite some time now. I want to know what the missing SKU is.

I guess I can understand that. I’m just trying to enjoy the game. I love comain’t up with new lists and trying new stuff.

Did you see this interview that Team Covenant posted Dec 6th?

Like interviews, articles about their thoughts on the game and the direction they are taking, etc. I think it would help the game, it would help the players, and most importantly for the developers, it would help them. So why are they not doing it? Can we make them? I mean... would it be really tough on their work hours to have a community Q&A once a month or something? I'm pretty sure they could afford half a day of answering questions, and it seems obvious to me that a better designer/player relationship would improve the sales and.... dare I say it? Maybe it would decrease the saltiness of the forums...

Max, Frank and Alex did one with the Scum and Villainy Podcast in October. That wasn't that long ago and based on player feedback on these forums and on podcasts over the last 6-12 months, the developers should be focusing on play testing and FAQ tweaks (we've at least seen the later).

Q&A wouldn't likely decrease salt in the forums because salt is the natural flavor of anonymous, opinionated posts on a public forum.

Are you absolutely freaking kidding me, dude?

We just got like six ships LAST MONTH.

Right.

Though Armada has a much more serious claim to being back-burnered, possibly so other printer-intensive projects like launching Rune Wars and launching Legion could have more production facility resources?

I believe it's been over a year since new Armada ships have hit store shelves, and the next Wave still doesn't look to be anywhere near store shelves yet either despite including only two ships, one of which is a 'repaint' pack with Thrawn's alternate-patterned Star Destroyer. Seriously, Rogue One was in theaters over a year ago, and we're still waiting on Raddus and his MC75 to finally get "to the printers" with the Star Destroyer repaint. And, unless I've missed something recently, there hasn't been an Armada FAQ update in well over a year, with still no official word on how some key cards from the last release (over a year ago) are supposed to work.

Just be thankful you're not Armada. Which is sad, because I used to prefer the mechanics, the objective-based gameplay, and the comparatively better balance of Armada, but with so little support from FFG it's been hard to keep any sort of local scene alive... :(

I just want an anti-bomb modification so Interceptors can come out of hiding and try to exist in this bomb world.

Amazing! everything you said in that quote is wrong!

As nice as it might seem, we have to remember we make up a very very Small % of the overall game Community and player base. They have the difficult decisions of making something for everyone that is not just the Forum lurkers and Soap Box Preachers. Because end of the day this is what they really want,

It is clear that the developers should communicate a little bit more with the community.
It is also clear that any form of AMA won't work, especially in a forum format as we have here. AMAs work on Reddit because popular posts can be upvoted and drift to the top, where the developers see them and can answer them. But we all know that popular does not equal reasonable or sensible question. "Why did you do X?" is not a good question.

So what other options are there?

  • We already get interviews. We got one in October, we got one in December. This is great! Hopefully we get one every quarter, but who knows?
  • We could get feedback survey. I've mentioned this several times. WotC regularly releases "unearthed arcana" playtest material, together with good surveys.
    • Opening playtesting is one thing that might be a good idea (yes I know, can't do that for spoiler-ish movie material. Yes I know, they definitely can do it for errata/FAQs).
    • But the survey for released content is definitely a good idea!
    • The drawback is that someone has to sift through them and identify the quality of the reply.
  • We could get more detailed comments with FAQs/erratas (examples can be seen with dev comments in Starcraft 2. I vaguely remember better examples for something else, maybe Magic, maybe LoL.). Outlining the thought process can go a long way!
  • We could get slightly better subforums. We just got the Epic subforum. This is awesome!
  • We could get more frequent articles where they just quickly address frequent concerns. It is completely acceptable to explain why a change is kept back. E.g. "we would like to monitor the situation regarding the use of Trajectory Simulator with Genius for some additional weeks until we decide whether a change is necessary". This would tell us that it is working now, that they are aware of the potential problem, and that they still have to decide how grave it is. Think about a monthly "state of the game" of around 1000 words would be more than enough. (for comparison: this was 1050 words)

We got the Hammerhead Corvettes and Quasar in July 2017 - it might feel like a year as the Chimaera and Profundity seem to have been previewed a long time ago.

They’re “on the boat” even though one feels they missed it with the MC75

so little support from FFG

New ships FAQ’d before release and official campaign pack speak otherwise. Latest Wave does seem to have been delayed. Many suspect it’s because of Legion but I also think they (cleverly and/or because of an insistent mouse) pushed these back to get the Silencer and Resistance Bomber out before TLJ.

Honestly I prefer Armada’s spread out release pace though. Allows me to get to grip with the ships before the next hotness is previewed.

I'm aghast at their actual job duties. Their job description is 'game designer', but they have to wear so many different hats and put out so many different fires that I boggle that they ever get anything meaningful done at all. Would I like them to communicate rigorously with our community? Sure. Do I want them to? Man, if FFG won't hire more staff to spread out some of that workload, it's best if they just get on with what needs doing without additional distractions or responsibilities.

Hah, figures the day I post this the new wave gets an "ON THE BOAT" stealth update on the Product Page. Heh, talk about timing...
