Setting up Jostero

By eljms, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I flew Unkar / Jostero / Emon again Friday night. 1-1 with a relatively easy win against a new player flying Rey / Lowhhrick and a tight points loss against Wes / Jan Ors / Wullffwarro. Wullffwarro had Finn / PtL and with Jan Ors support had minimum 5 dice attack, he one-shotted Jostero which didn't exactly get things off to a good start. I didn't fly it very well and would have been well beaten if I hadn't managed to tractor beam Wullffwarro close to the edge of the board so that he flew off with his maneuver. Unkar (26 points) and Jan (30 points) left when we hit time.

I think I need to just straight joust with this list but it did make feel how vulnerable I'll be to anything with truly hard hitting offense.

I'm still playing with the guts of this list, Emon, Jostero and Unkar. Following some more play testing I'm currently at the following:

Emon Azzameen (47) - Firespray-31
•Cad Bane (2), Concussion Missiles (4), •Slave I (0), Guidance Chips (0), Proximity Mines (3), Extra Munitions (2)
•Captain Jostero (30) - Kihraxz
Expertise (3), Cruise Missiles (2), Vaksai (0), Guidance Chips (0), Pulsed Ray Shield (1)
•Unkar Plutt (23) - Quadjumper
•Cikatro Vizago (0), Pattern Analyzer (2), •Cloaking Device (2), Spacetug Tractor Array (2)

I've made the following changes:

1. I've dropped one set of proximity mines in favor of concussion missiles on Emon

- Why, when Emon's specialty is as a bomber? The bottom line is that the list needs more offensive firepower. Having played the list a few times there are no guarantees I get to use all those bombs and I've rued not having Emon hit a bit harder when he just gets a regular attack. The concussion missiles help a lot here.

- Why not harpoons? Harpoons are tempting as they offer another route to proc'ing Jostero but generally speaking Emon and Unkar want to be in the thick of the action at range one. Harpoon splash damage is as likely to hurt me as anyone else.

2. I've dropped proximity mines on Unkar to free up points to help Jostero

- Although proximity mines are a great way of triggering Jostero, especially with Cad Bane on the board, Unkar has really shone with tractor beam. One consequence of this choice is that scavenger crane no longer makes sense as the replacement illicit. I've been using intertial dampeners to give Unkar an extra movement option. I'm also interested in try an EMP device for later in the game when (if) I decloak.

3. I've used the points to put cruise missiles on Jostero

- This has been great so far. As someone earlier in the thread mentions, the extra attack doesn't necessarily mean that much in terms of damage. However, the cruise missiles carry threat, especially as you may get to fire them before the enemy ship has moved or has tokens. It obviates the low PS target lock issue because I'm going to move into range take the target lock and shoot before the ship moves. The ideal sequence is tractor beam with Unkar, move into range and target lock with Jostero and then bomb with Emon. When I've managed to execute at least the last two steps of that sequence it's been brutal.

4. Traded predator + ion discharger for expertise

- I'd love to keep the ion discharger but expertise makes more sense with the cruise missiles for fully modified attack

5. I'm trying to fly better!

Lastly, I'm trying to learn how to fly this effectively and a big key appears to be holding Jostero back. If he's an available target during the first round of combat he quite possibly dies without achieving anything. Emon and the then cloaked Unkar are more survivable. My current approach is to get them in the thick of it keeping Jostero out of range for the first round of combat and then try and move him in on at least a three speed maneuver (preferably four straight) if I think I can trigger his ability with an Emon prox mine. This has felt like a workable strategy although I've only tried it twice so far.

Just played a game with Jostero agaist dash/poe (he's my bro in law and is fairy new to the game so don't judge to hard).

I had dead man's switch on Jostero and managed to do 1 damage with the DMS then another 4 with a range 1 attack agaist dash to Finnish him off. I still had nym so I was going to win but its still a cool ending.

PS. Apparently Dead man's switch works with Jostero

Thanks, I'd not considered this. It would be neat if I can find a point to fit it in, possibly instead of pulse ray shield or by dropping Unkar down to a Jakku Gunrunner.

I think I'd like to try Feed Back Array as the second illicit on Unkar as well. That would be another solid Jostero trigger.
