What’s in it for you?

By Makelumpycanon, in Star Wars: Legion

I was just curious what everyones motivation was for getting into Legion. I personally would like to be active in any tournament scene that develops and focus mostly on the game aspect. I enjoy painting to a degree, but the gameplay is way more important to me. I have also never built terrain, but I would be open to trying. Btw, you all have been doing beautiful work on your terrain and tables. Keep it up.

I’m not really a veteran to the whole tabletop wargaming thing, so I was surprised to find out that some people might actually care more about the modeling and terrain building than the actual game. That’s an interesting approach to me if that’s what some of the playerbase feels is important. So, why are you buying Legion?

Star wars fan who is sick of the consistent 40k rule changes and making armies or miniatures obsolete with every new codex that comes out.

We also use EVERY available SW mini we can find for our RPG campaigns :)

Agree with Nihm.

I'm a 40k player who is tired of having options constantly invalidated and being forced to purchase a never=ending series of rule books to be able to play a game. I'm also not going to have to have a negotiation about what rules we're using before every game. 40k has Open Play, Narrative Play, Matched Play, Open War, Apocalypse, Planet Strike, etc, etc...

For me, its seems to be check several boxes. Like most (all?) here, I'm fan of Star Wars though more from the heart than the brain which allows me to enjoy it despite plot holes or inconsistencies and canon changes. Also, I enjoy miniature painting though I'm not that good at it. Lastly, it seems like the game will be rather easy to pick up so I can play with the wife and also very easy to simplify so that I can play with the kids for fun (much like X-Wing). With much thanks to Sorastro, I'm trying to up my game painting game a bit and since my 8yo likes to sit down and paint next to me and also likes Star Wars, we can do that together. It's nice to have those moments.

And I'm a fairly new 40k player who is anything but impressed with the "new" 40k. I love the setting, I love the models and will continue to build and paint my Imperial Guard until the army is a finished 2k points, but I cant see myself playing, or very rarely if so.

Legion, on the completely opposite side, looks so fun and seems to play so fluid that I would be into it no matter what setting it was attached to! Luckily Star Wars is a nice setting even though im getting pretty fed up with it lately. Im very excited to get my hands on the core to try it out first hand! Seems like truly modern miniature wargame.

I plan to get the core and a few expansions initially, and depending on how the local scene evolves I might start playing at the LFGS and focus mainly on one faction. Otherwise ill treat it as I do Armada and build myself a solid 2-player collection for whenever I can get a friend to play with me :)

I like star wars, i want to get into miniatures amd painting and so trial by fire it is! Jumping in headfirst without any experience in miniatures

Reason #1 Star Wars

Reason #2 Painting

Reason #3 Large(er) scale armies

Much the same boat as you. A strong tourney scene really helps drive my motivations to keep playing. New faces, new challenges. I love X-Wing for this, but nowadays I just feel a bit done with space ships. I was really enjoying Imperial Assault but the local scene is dead. So I'm hoping for more players than anything else.

40k is such an odd beast for me. I love the setting more than almost any other, and some of th models are just amazing.

But the game...eugh. I hated the last couple of editions, and was mildly excited for 8th but they sucked any depth at all right out of it.

These days I just get individual models for display.

It's a miniature game with board game heritage. It's fast, streamlined, keeps the focus on the table rather than on army books and wound tables. I love painting miniatures and these ones look absolutely top notch.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I'm most interested in playing the game and I'm hoping to get some local tournaments going eventually. I do enjoy painting, but it's slow going hard work for me, so for me sitting down and playing the game is where it's at.

Always looked at minis and was curious. Never saw a game that interested me. Came close to Bolt Action until I learned about "bolt counters" and turned me off a little. Tinkered with X-Wing at the local store. The whole meta ... you must play this list or you lose ... major turn off, as it suffocates aspects of the game. All along I had said ... if there was only an army/infantry game based on Star Wars.

It happened. Now, I can paint; build; model and go play.

Less miniatures than 40K, popular enough so people might actually play it.

I love starwars.

I love tabletop gaming, and was going to get back into 40k but then they announced Legion.

I play Xwing and Armada, and a friend owns imperial assault,

I got into Runewars and it got me back into painting, so I'm eagerly awaiting Legion and doing table terrain too.

Star Wars

Minis with a good set of rules

Painting

Custom armies due to upgrades in a card format

40K is something I always wanted to play, but the cost of GW's plastic was always a turnoff. In addition, I thought the aesthetic was really cool, but the sheer amount of options was daunting. So, I never bought in.

I harbor no illusions that ill be dropping a stupid amount of money on Legion, but for that money I get more minis that are based around my favorite IP. And I've always thought that FFG put out some pretty quity stuff, ever since my first game of theirs, the World of Warcraft board game.

Oh yeah. 'Murica. FFG people know how to enjoy a good iced tea.

What is "bolt counters"? Bolt action is a fantastic ruleset, one of the best ive tried, but im not big into WWII gaming. If the ruleset was directly copied into 40k, I would probably not play another game after that :D

But Legion really does feel fresh and exciting, I think FFG might yet again set the standard to which others will have to live up to. We will see of course, sadly Runewars was kind of a miss last year.

A word of advice though, dont expect Legions to be any different then any other game when it comes to meta and listbuilding. Sooner or later there will be those go-to lists in Legion as well that you will either play or lose to. Dont let this ruin your joy of the game though, you play it how you want and if its only casually with friends, meta will never be a problem!

A few more 40k defectors that I expected, but that’s good. I too dabbled in 40k back in the day and got disheartened by it. Ever since that time I’ve been looking for a tabletop wargame that has a theme I love, is affordable, and has excellent gameplay. I’m thinking I’ve finally found it.

For me, its a gateway into miniature gaming, miniature painting, and terrain building. I am incredibly interested in the hobby, and I am hoping to spark some interest in some of my board game loving friends. Miniature games is something I have always wanted to get into, but games like Warhammer and even Warmachine have felt so daunting because of how expansive they are.

For a first time player, who has no idea how to strategically play these games, I want to start with something new. Once I get comfortable with painting and how the games tend to work, I think I might be more interested in checking out other miniature wargames.

Plus, Star Wars is an IP I love. I'm happy to dive in and play with characters and a world that I know.

Bolt Counter being someone that would comment on the incorrect hue of brown on a solider or the wrong weapon in the wrong themed army due to time period. Not constructive criticism either. No ... just uncalled for "my ego is bigger than yours" stuff. Considering I majored in history with an emphasis on WWII, found I had ZERO desire or patience to listen to bickering between adults, which sounded like 8 years old in a sandbox, over something so small. During what was my free time, which is so limited. Gaming in theory should be fun. It is a game. Keep it in the right frame.

As a game, I REALLY enjoyed Bolt Action. Very cool game. Legion appears to have similar rules. Seeing grown men argue over the color of a model ... yeah ... less than awesome. Where I live has a MASSIVE sci-fi/fantasy gaming community and TINY historical group. The local group just had a few over the top sort of guys and, hey, if that is there thing, more power to them. Not how I would spend my free time.

The 40K crowd ... I was invited to watch a tourney ... more laid back just not my thing and I knew I could be given a year and, given work, would never finish painting an army. You need a lot of gear to get going in that game. Crowd more there for fun than a debate.

X-Wing folks pretty fun. Went to a league night with 30 people. Just realized you either had to have list 1, 2 or 3 ... really just list 1 ... to play. I get it and understand just opted not to go all-in.

I know the meta stuff will come with Legion. I also, know, given the local community, there will be a whole bunch of people to play with that will keep it casual and fun. And for a game like this I can manage it, as I am really enjoying learning to paint and model and such

I picked up 40K for the models and enjoyed the heck out of painting them. Rarely did I ever get a game with them, however.

Several years passed, and those models have just sat in a box.

When X-Wing came along, I initially bought into it. Overall, I enjoy playing, though I have not kept up with the most recent waves.

Legion sounds like a 40K-type infantry battle, and I am hoping for a good community built up around it. I really look forward to getting back into the painting side of minis, as well. Sorastro's videos are giving me the itch to work up my painting skills again.

I collected the 3.75 highly articulated action figures by Hasbro for years. My motivation there was building my very own mini Star Wars universe one character at a time. Since Hasbro has moved onto the 6 inch scale my collection has sort of dead ended. But with Legion I can literally build my own Star Wars universe. I'm hoping that they make tons of named characters rather than mostly generic, but customizing the figures is a fun part of it. I'm already planning on confirming my old, bearded rebel trooper as Rex. And the duro rebel trooper can obviously be Shriv.

That is awesome! Adding elements like Rex and Shriv into this game is very cool, I like personalizing my miniatures as well, it gives them more meaning.

Side bar ... they do have Black Series 3.75 that, as of now, are still exclusive to Walmart. However, that is changing shortly and they will be available at other retailers.
