Strategy and tactics

By lexpweller, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hello,

I would really like to get better at Imperial Assault skirmish, so I decided to ask here for some help and suggestions. I'm already following Twin Troopers and of course practicing every time I have a chance.

I'm especially interested in these topics:

1. Since most missions have objectives in two different areas of the map, do you usually split your party or is it generally better to stay united and advance all together?

2. I understand that positioning C-3PO is crucial... but how to do that efficiently? He has speed 3, so how do you manage to have him always adjacent to your other figures? Also, do you activate him before or after the figures you want him to be adjacent to?

3. When your opponent has figures with lots of health points, like Bantha or ATDP and so on, do you focus on killing them first, or do you prefer to avoid them and get to the smaller figures first?

4. Any important suggestions/things to always keep in mind you have to share...?

I know that most of the time the answer to my questions is "it depends on the situation", but maybe we can keep it a little generalized this time. It would really help.

Thank you!

1. Depends, but staying close usually pays off

2. I usually use him up early and position him to where I want to go with the other figures. He's great for using up an activation.

3. Whatever they throw at you first, it's a good bet you'll need to take it down. Finishing it is preferable, but not always possible.

4. Build a list around a fun character that you like. But don't get greedy, ie. having 2 power houses can work, but it means you need some great support and secondary units.

5. And GIA (Greedo is awesome). The end.

I'm not going to have answers everyone agrees with here, but I'll give my two cents:

1. This truly depends, not on situation, but list. If you have alliance smugglers, you have them run alone. If you have some pure "grabbers" like Hired Guns or the like, you have them alone. If you are running stuff like Imperial, with officers you keep them clumped until they get into the fray, then have officers get objectives late.

2. Yeah, with 3P0, you activate him, focus someone, then move him, in the general direction, while hopefully still out of line of sight. Then rebuild around your guys. You can always move him then focus again.

3. Bantha will be in your space, so you need to kill him. ATDP you want to get damage on to get rid of the power generator. If you can avoid the ATDP's LOS you can stay away a bit. With Vader, you have to do damage to him, but it's kind of a balance. Onar, you just blast away hopefully at some range. IG, you do the same as Vader, 15 health is a ton, but if you have any pierce you should focus fire with the pierce.

4. Have fun with your list. It's a great time to experiment since most of the iconic figures are very playable. You need to have an answer for Vader if you are going to have a viable list (either damage or enough stun). Unless you have Negation in hand, always assume your opponent has Take Initiative. Every character needs to get his points worth back, try to figure out how to get points back for everything you are playing (either through focus, or killing things or grabbing objective or soaking up shots.)

I'm sure there will be far better answers than mine, but in a real quick post, those are my thoughts.

I'll just say that the answers to all of your questions are "it depends". They depend on your group, the opposing group, the mission, how both players are playing. Strategy is not stagnant, so those questions will never have 100% answers. Keep practicing and you'll get a feel for how to play in different situations.

1: it depends on what you think you can control. don't waste figures, but sometimes using a figure to contest even if you expect him to be defeated is worth your time.

2: 3PO's speed is a detriment, but that depends again on how you're using him. If you prioritize the defensive bonus, you can usually post him up somewhere effective with a double move (6 movement points). If you prioritize the focus, you can still use some other movement shenanigans (Gideon/Hera, command cards) to get him where he needs.

3: depends on what type of firepower you have and if you think you can remove the figure before they generate a lot of damage in their next activation.

4: Play as much as you can. GIA
