Dalan oberos

By clive89, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi all,

I'e got the guns for hire pack and want to play with my new toys.

Why isn'the anyone talking about Dalan? Is he that bad? My idea is:

Bumpmaster, Guri with Virago and all the toys, Dalan with Outmaneuver.

I imagine a competitive list would swap Dalan with Fenn Rau. But is Dalan that bad of an option?

Dalan (Starviper) has a cool pilot ability, but low Pilot Skill. There are some ships he'll bully, but there are lots of ships his tricks will be mostly useless against. I guess the theory for new Starvipers is that the things that Dalan will beat, a Thweek will also beat. However, the things Dalan loses against might have a harder time with an equal-PS Thweek.

Pretty much this, as with most scum he's not terrible, but there's just better options ( thweek or fenn as you mention) which means he sees little to no play.

Disregard those nay-sayers.

Here is my Dalan Build.

Con Air (97)

Dalan Oberos (Kimogila) — M12-L Kimogila Fighter 25
Deadeye 1
Extra Munitions 2
Concussion Missiles 4
Overclocked R4 1
Guidance Chips 0
Enforcer 1

Ship Total: 34

Usually, you want abilities you can count on in every game to be competitive because you face 5 or 6 different lists. Dalan is mid PS that can only get to ps9 in a ps10/11 meta. So yeah, he can be really good in matches like triple wookiees or even triple defenders, but then is completely useless in a triple aces list, or imperial alpha etc. So, it comes down to is his ability just amazing that its worth the extra points for those certain matchups or can I just spend the points elsewhere on a ship good in every match like Thweek?

How about this for Dalan (SV)

Dalan Oberos (30)
Predator (3)
Fire-Control System (2)
Contraband Cybernetics (1)
Autothrusters (2)
StarViper Mk. II (-3)
Virago (1)

Total: 36

It's a hefty 36 points. You could drop the 2nd title (especially if you have Guri/Thweek who would much rather have FCS) but the idea of the Cybernetics would work well with his ability.

I think a big reason he doesn't see much play (besides PS) is because for a majority of non-top tier players positioning is already hard to master, especially when you thrown in the T-Roll aspects. Its just easier to run Thweek for less points and the highest PS on the table.

Predator+FCS doesn't work pretty well.Whith Predator I would prefer Adv, for more shenanigans

I also like the Starviper version of Dalan, however I agree with some of the others that he doesn't have a high enough PS to make best use of his ability, and is probably not as good overall as Thweek or Guri. I don't have much experience with Scum but I tried him out for the first time this week with the following set-up:

Dalan Oberos (Starviper) - Veteran Instincts, Starviper MkII, Virago, Advanced Sensors, Autothrusters, Contraband Cybernetics

He was partnered up with Talonbane Cobra and Viktor Hel, vs an Imperial Fleet consisting of Kylo Ren (Silencer), Omega Ace and Quickdraw. Viktor went down pretty easily, as did Talonbane (although he did at least finish off Quickdraw first), but Dalan lasted a lot longer, even with his PS reduced to 0 and on one hit point remaining. Took down Omega Ace before he died and gave Kylo the runaround. The Contraband Cybernetics really helped, allowing him to do 2 S-loops in a row and still focus.

Unfortunately I never got to use his pilot ability once as my opponent had initiative and forced me to move first (Omega Ace had Adaptability so was same PS as Dalan but moved afterwards), and I had given him VI so he could react to opponents moves. I think with more practice and forethought you could still make use of his ability as it allows you to perform manoeuvres not on your dial, as well as potentially concealing your intentions from someone that has Intelligence Agent as what they see when they look at your dial may not be where you are actually planning to move.

Thanks for those thoughts. It has given me some things to think about.

I will probably give Dalan a run around at a casual game night for fun, then swap it for Fenn later.

As you say, if I only play low ps opponents I might be fooled into thinking Dalan is amazing.

Cheers all.

Here's the Dalan list I've been running to try and get a feel for the new 'viper pilots:

(30) Starviper: •Dalan Oberos (30)
Autothrusters (2)
Starviper Mk.II (-3)
Attanni Mindlink (1)

(31) Starviper: •Thweek (28)
Autothrusters (2)
Starviper Mk.II (-3)
•Virago (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Contraband Cybernetics (1)

(39) Jumpmaster 5000: Contracted Scout (25)
•Punishing One (12)
Attanni Mindlink (1)
Intelligence Agent (1)

Total: 100/100

The Intel agent on the scout helps mitigate his mid level PS (also with Thweek Mimic) and mindlinked to help him keep mods when he does T-roll. I'm left wondering though, if I wouldn't be better off swapping straight across for Guri at the exact same price...
