Any tips for cutting a Range Ruler?

By s1ickrick, in X-Wing

I want to cut my Range Ruler so can have a Range 1 and 2. Any tips on what to use to cut and where? I was gonna aim for center of the line between Range 1 and 2.

If you're cutting an acrylic ruler, use a jewelry saw.

I know for Armada (and I’m 90% for x wing too) .... Rules wise, the line belongs to the lower band... so your cut should be on the range 2 edge of the line.

Honnestly, FFG can't make super accurate rulers themselves, so a micrometer either way is very YOLO.

Rather than risking a mangled range ruler, just invest in a set of acrylics with all three.

This is good advice.

Well, my sons and I ended up with a surplus of acrylic range rulers last year. Just score the line with a hobby knife and snap it. Worked like a charm.

I am cutting a cardboard range ruler. Any tips for cutting this type?

Lightsaber. Works every time.

The one time I tried to cut one of my cardboards, the cut was a little uneven, So I could gain/lose a mm depending on which edge.
I promply ordered an acrylic set after throwing the cut cardboards in the trash.

I cut cardboard with a fresh blade in a utility knife, metal ruler to guide the cut, and brace the range ruler against something. (Really, a metal t-square or similar item would be more reliable.) That said, my cut cardboard was only a temporary measure before I, too, invested in a set of acrylics. The acrylics only ran me $18 for all three range rulers plus maneuver templates, so not like its an expensive route to go.

If you look REALLY closely, the FFG cardboard ruler is actually a double line that's slightly different colors. Get a fresh xacto knife, hold it as horizontal as you can, and score it about 30 times right between the two lines. Press hard, but not TOO hard. Score it *casually*.

Works great until you can get a set of acrylics. Even the orange set that's FFG store champs this year I've seen for $20 or so, maybe less. ****, people were giving those things to other players in my area (but we also had 10 store champs nearby).

FFG cardboard range rulers vary quite a bit. I lined up 7 rulers side-by-side. The positions of the range band markings varied by up to 1-2mm. I used my acrylic range rulers to set my lengths.

I used a sharp pocket knife to cut them. I scored them lightly at first to make sure I had a straight line then just sliced them apart. Even so, my cut was very slightly uneven but I just used some sand paper to even it up. I then spray painted them. They look great and are nearly identical in length to my acrylic rulers.

I used trauma shears to cut my cardboard ruler, then somehow lost the range 1 portion in a week or so. :(

I cut an extra Range Ruler at the R2 mark, so the R1 ruler says "3" and the R2 ruler says "1" and "2". I have acrylics now though, and have given the cardboard ones to a newer player who was really appreciative.

Use a sharp blade on a utility knife/box cutter or similar and use a straight edge to help guide the cut.
Don't use enough force to try and slice through in one go: You'll likely move something out of alignment and risk injuring yourself as well.
About 3-5 draws along the first cut should give you a good, clean edge.

Luckily, you can make 2 more out of the other piece!

My advice is to not.

Buy acrylic. If you love this game and plan on playing it a lot - playing with acrylic will greatly richen the experience.

My first game of x wing, the range ruler dropped onto the ground and the dog promptly grabbed it while I began chasing. It was a bit like the (spoiler) fleet chase in TLJ only a little more exciting and emotional. After said mangled cardboard was retrieved, I used an xacto knife to cut on the range 3band line which was the only part intact. Hoping the range bands were all the same we finished the game by flipping it end over end on the table for range 2 to 3 measurements.

Anyway, buy some acrylics. A metal t square and a sharp knife will do in the meantime though.

Fun trick, the range 1 and 2 rulers are completely unnecessary! The 5-straight template is the same length as a range 2 ruler, and the 2-straight template plus the 1-straight template turned on its side is equivalent to a range 1 ruler!

Edit: here's a picture of that:

FFG cardboard is not accurate at all. I made acryilcs and took the average from 5 sets of FFG cardboard because they were considerably different.

But that’s my range 2 ruler!

I'd say go by the edge closer to the higher range. Use good scissors or a box cutter. And make sure you have spare range rules in case you **** it up.

Use your teeth.

Here is a pair I made. I stuck one of those yard sale price stickers over the range number then spray painted them grey. Turned out pretty cool.
