Jawa

By kixaplix, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So far I have seen two Jawas on the community forms. So, I looked at the two Jawas and the Chadra-fan in stay on target as a template. I know that some people will like it, others will not that is the nature of the game.

JAWA

Characteristics : Brawn (1), Cunning (2), Presence (2), Agility (2), Intellect (3), Willpower (1)

Wound Threshold : 9+Brawn
Strain Threshold : 11+Willpower
Starting Experience : 90 XP

Languages : Jawa, and Basic

Special Abilities: Jawas are small creatures and are considered to have a silhouette of 0. Jawas begin the game with one rank in Mechanics. They still may not train Mechanics above rank 2 during character creation.

Scavenger: Since Jawas are practically born and raised savaging goods from the vast dunes of Tatooine the Jawa removes one setback dice from checks made to find or scavenge items or gear.

Some other thoughts:

Cunning includes a lot of skills that represent them:

Deception

Perception

Streetwise

Skulduggery

Survival

Intellect has a lot of skills that don’t really apply to them:

All of the Knowledge ones

Astrogation

Medicine

You very rarely get 1 characteristic at 3 and 2 characteristics at 1.

You might want to simplify things and give them the talent Forager, as that does essentially the same thing as your last bit.

I don’t want to be too negative, it’s just that I’ve looked at A LOT of species stats in making my Complete Species Guide.

TY, I look/read at the jawa from movies, books, old republic (game), posts, etc. I see the jawas as a nomad race looking for everything. People have heard of them but a very few outside tatooine have seen them.

I did not want to give the race a talent or skill tree. so i reworked the talent Utinni to Scavenger. Since most of the Special Abilities in the books do reword talents to help fit/benefit the races better.

I do thank everyone who posts. i understand that everyone has a different view on the jawa.

Having worked on some species before, I can tell you that this is entirely too weak. A "standard" species would have all characteristics at 2, Wounds and Strain at 10+, a rank in one skill, a special ability that is roughly equivalent to a single rank of a talent (or IS a single rank of a talent), and 110 xp.

I would price your version of Jawas as follows:

Characteristics: You gain +20 for each of the 1s, and -30 for the 3 Intellect, for a total of +10.

Thresholds: You're even on this, +5 for the -1 Wound, -5 for the +1 Strain.

Special Abilities: You have one rank in a skill, and an average special ability. +0.

As written, this Jawa should have a base of 120 xp.

I might recommend the following:

Brawn 1, Agility 2, Intellect 2, Cunning 3, Willpower 2, Presence 2

Wound Threshold: 9 + Brawn; Strain Threshold: 11 + Willpower

Starting XP: 100 xp.

Special Abilities: Jawas begin with 1 rank in Mechanics. Jawas may not train Mechanics above rank 2 at character creation.

Scavenger: Jawas begin with 1 rank in Utinni!.

Essentially the same as you had, but boosted so that it's equivalent to existing species, instead of significantly underpowered. There's also little reason for them NOT to have Utinni!. Your Scavenger ability is mechanically exactly the same, and Utinni! is ranked, so there is no downside to having an additional rank. Typically, the species abilities that mimic an existing talent without granting the talent itself do so because the talent in question is non-ranked, so it can't stack with itself. Plus, I mean, come on. It's JAWAS :) . Jawas are the entire reason the Utinni! talent exists in the first place!

I also moved the boosted characteristic to Cunning. It helps them with Survival and Streetwise, which they need to both live in the harsh Tattooine desert and do unscrupulous deals with moisture farmers :) .

ty, for your opinion. Like i said i look at the Chadra Fan in Age of Rebellion Stay on Target Book . May the force be with you

PS. I am taking notes on everything what people are saying thank you again

I can not wait until the jawa come out in a book

adding things

I have voiced my opinion before that i do not think int should be raised as cunning is more appropriate. While they are traders their is nothing that shows them as particularly great mechanics.

A rank in mechanics is better as it shows a cultural adaptation t9 scavenging but not an inherent aptitude. They are much better survivors and cheats.

Also no race gets a talent tree

They should get utinni its named after them. It is THE most jawa thing in the game and most accurately represents them on screen.

I would do this

1brawn 2agility 2int 3cun 2 wil 2 presence

Free rank in either mechanics, negotiation or deception

Free Utinni talent

100xp

9wounds

12 strain

Or

85xp

1brawn 2agility 3int 3cun 2 presence

1 setback to charm or leadership checks due to smell

Free rank in mechanics, deception or negotiation.

Utinni

Also the game doesn't mechanically address languages.

IMO, the best Jawa is to take the Chadra-Fan and remove their improved senses and replace with a free rank in Utinni!

Jawas are found all across the galaxy and are always wearing their traditional robes. There's nothing to say that they are any more attuned to living in desert climates. No need for any kind of heat tolerance.

Giving them Agility 3 makes no real sense, nor does Cunning 2.
