Multiple miniature hobbies

By JackD2204, in Star Wars: Legion

I just got into warhammer, but was wondering if it would be too hard to manage legion alongside it, anyone out there that does modeling for several miniature games; if so how do you manage it all? Thx

Warhammer can be pretty wallet consuming. The important thing to remember is that once you have them you have them. You don't have to keep on buying each and every expansion they put out. Start with a core set and play it till you get bored then add to it. A lot of people are preordering for entire armies. I am waiting to see what there is to choose from.

Legion is a lot cheaper lol just play one faction and go nuts from there. I think it depends on your area. Are both games being played about the same?

But yes I have done it for many years. But one game has always been bigger than the other. Im done with Armada, so I think Legion will be my go to and Flames of War more for fun on the side.

As an australian after many years xwing and then 7th ed gsc started a tabletop itch again. Having bought half my cult (and bloody cheap too!) Before legion announced, i now realize buying into a single faction of legion is going to be cheaper than finishing the other half of my intended force!

Now milage may vary depending on location, but as a second mini hobby legion shold be fine. Me on the otherhand will be swapping when it drops and crying over my (somewhat wasted) 40k investment.

Well, that depends? If you are a collector and need to have "ALL THE MINIS!" then no... maybe if you have enough disposable income. If you are that rare player that only buys miniatures he really plays then it's totally manageable.

But: every miniature system takes time! Lots of it. Reading rules, painting minis and most of all playing. If you a short on cash and/or time maybe focus on one system that has more players in your area.

With that said: BUY ALL THE MINIS! HUZZAH!!!!111!1!!1 ;)

But what about starting two hobbies at the same time, armada and legion?

Armada is prepainted and preassembled, so that's just a matter of finances and play time.

Yeah... I have too little of the first and too much of the second.

also, how much longer do you think armada has to live?

As long as people keep buying it?

There's a lot of hype for Wave Heaven, even from people who've never played before, so I don't see it being any time soon.

I think Armada is ok for now. There’s plenty of new trilogy ships to do yet, let alone a lot of novel stuff.

Hopefully anyway...it’s a **** fine game if it’s not played fully competitively.

Hmm. Guess I go with legion for now, maybe armada later

Or Armada now and Legion later when it comes out.

I play X-Wing, Armada, IA, Descent 2.0, Zombicide, looking at Legion, Batman, Doctor Who on top of the Star Wars LCG and D&D and very casual Dice Masters. Most of these are not true miniature games, but it is the format I like. I am burned out on the X-Wing 100/3 and the silly constant meta the community sticks rigidly to, several of us have tried to offer alternative play but it has not been welcomed, I am a full wave behind in ships and not sure if I will buy all of them. Armada I love the difference over X-Wing, I just wish the objective play was more solid, still see a most games go to a "kill them all", but locally we don't follow the meta nor does the game have as small meta as X-Wing. The others are all good co-op games, never got into IA for the skirmish mode. I am hopeful that FFG has flushed out the objectives more in Legion and will be a better system than Armada.

I mainly play 40k with multiple large armies(average game is 2500) and two large and growing Bolt Action armies(once a year when I see a big army deal I grab some in some delusion that I will play a massive game some time and use them all). I don't have a single 100% painted army and aside from tourney players and their set piece armies(another reason I don't play 1850 games is to avoid tourney players) I don't believe in completely painted armies since the hobby side is 50% percent of the game. I will likely get an Imperial army for Legion when I get back to the world provided other people are actively playing it. One of the benefits I guess of a long term mission is not having to invest at the beginning in yet another game that my local groups might play once or twice and shelf like so many others(Firestorm, Dropship commander, malifaux, warmahordes....)

I have lots and lots and lots of miniatures. I don't see any issue:)

Play Warmachine/Hordes, 40K, WHFB, Runewars, Bushido and some Infinity/Aristeia on the side. This will honestly be my first dive into FFG SW territory, and I'm pretty excited. If I enjoy it, I might finally be giving 40K the boot honestly. Their pricing, 8th's oversimplified (imo) rules and imbalances for the past several editions have driven a wedge in my desire. Add to that their now comfortable practice of charging $140 for a large mini, or $25 for a single character has made my purchasing dry up. I cared more back when we had a local community, but now it's mostly WMH and Infinity. That said WMH has also gotten pricey. I don't need the worlds best models. I just need a solid balanced game that is affordable, and some are honestly getting out of reach for me as a family man, lol.

I feel your pain!

I used to be into miniature games back in the late 80s with WH40k/Epic. I only recently got back into the scene over the past two years with X-Wing and Armada (no tournament play though - just with friends/family so far). Legion is the first squad-level miniatures game that has caught my attention in a long time - but after watching YouTube videos, I've also now discovered Bolt Action 2nd edition/Konflikt 47...aaaaaaaaahhhhhh. I just bought a whole bunch of Citadel/Vallejo paints, terrain/basing materials, in prep for Legion and maybe BA/Konflikt '47. Konflikt '47 really appeals to me as a better alternative to Dust, which I always wanted to try but couldn't get over the mismanagement of that IP so never bothered; BA/Konflikt seems well liked and supported.

I've pretty much committed to:

Legion
Bolt Action 2nd/Konflikt 47
Armada (already have almost everything...looking forward to Profundity!)
X-Wing (only have a few ships though as it didn't appeal to me as much as Armada)

Out of all of these, Legion and Bolt Action are looking to be the most expensive as you also have to factor in the initial cash outlay for paints, materials and time for model assembly & painting, and making terrain/buildings, etc...which quickly adds up!

With that said, the wargaming scene has changed SO much since I was a kid, mostly for the better. The amount of terrain and building options available is staggering (e.g. all those 4Ground MDF building kits, 3D printed terrain, great quality plastic models, etc). Now if only I was rich and didn't have to work! :P

I’m currently deeply into;

Infinity

Saga/Swordpoint

Imperial Assault

Malifaux

And to lesser extents;

Various Samurai Games (all same minis, yay)

Armada

Necromunda

Some chattered other bits

I genuinely have no clue how I find the time with those, work, gym, a wife, etc etc

Oh yes, this is a problem. I currently collect and paint Kings of War, 40k, Bolt Action, Runewars, and the odd medieval historic from the Perry’s. I manage it by painting a little at a time from each army, rebasing old miniatures and repainting them as I forget how I did the originals or change my mind so that I am assured of never having a fully painted army like... ever.

So, play them all, but focus on one army at a time and finish it, keeping notes of the colors and materials used so it’s easy to add to later.
