R2 or Chopper?

By FSD, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I'm thinking about trying to get to a regional event this year and was going to run a Rebel force of Jedi Luke, eRangers, eSabs with TC, Gideon and 3PO. Trying to decide between R2 and Chopper for my remaining 3 points.

I'm also open to dropping 3PO (I know, heresy!!) and having 5 pts to play with (Jyn, Hera, MHD?).

Thoughts?

R2 could be a solid pick right now as half of the 6 tournament-map starting positions have a Terminal within 3 spaces or less while the other half are 4 (so you'll need to move R2 up with Hera to get a first turn Scomp). I wouldn't run him without Hera to get him out 4 spaces from the deployment zone to a terminal R1 on maps like Nal Hutta or one side of Jabba's Palace though... but he's obvious better on the new Jawa map than Anchorhead.

Conversely, I've played lots of Chopper and know that he provides a lot of value by ramming to move or damage things pretty often. Shocking your opponent officers etc is good too.

Clarified maps good for R2

Depends on your needs: If you really need the extra Command Cards for Son of Skywalker & any Heavy Weapon cards, I'd suggest R2. If you really want to control your opponent's Command Card draw, go with Chop.

My personal preference is R2. Chopper’s ability to damage an opponent on a terminal is nice, but it’s going to take several rounds to defeat an opposing R2. Chopper has additional utility with Ram and an ok melee attack, but he doesn’t really ever bother me when I put someone on a terminal.

I ran a similar list last year and spent my last 3 points on Mak. Just having the threat of some of those good spy cards can influence how an opponent plays.

I feel R2 is the best play in your list. You are really going to want to see Son of Skywalker as often as possible!

There's one player at my game store that always runs Chopper. He is one annoying tin can because you never really want to take 2, possibly 3 damage for terminal sitting.

I feel R2 is better though. 3 cards a round when terminal sitting and using Scomp Link. R2 is great when your opponent is running Chopper too. If you don't want to take damage, move to the terminal with R2, Scomp Link and move away. You're still getting 2 cards a round as if you were controlling a terminal while your opponent's attempt to limit your card draw with Chopper is somewhat nullified. As already stated by Fightwookies, R2 can last a match terminal sitting even with Chop doing the same because it almost never goes longer than 3 rounds.

Basically, unless you plan to put Chop into ramming mode, R2 is the way to go.

I would certainly go with R2 since you want to do everything you can to draw Son of Skywalker, and with R2 holding a terminal you can get through just under half of your deck during round 2. (3 to start, 3 in round 1, 1 during round 2.) Then up over half end of round 2. You also want to see Take Initiative/Negation depending on your initiative situation with Jedi Luke.

With Jedi Luke you should go with R2. Gotta increase those chances of drawing SoS or Devotion. R2 is also much better off in the new map rotation than before. On Anchorhead it was pretty much impossible for him to move and Scomp on turn 1. Conversely in the new Mos Eisley Back Alleys map both deployment zones are only 2 spaces away from a terminal so he can definitely do it. On Jabba and Nal Hutta there's one deployment zone each that's within reach of R2 to move and Scomp. The other deployment zones require an extra space but that can be achieved with Hera's ability.

In most other lists, especially Scum, I like Chopper because he really messes with your opponent's decision to grab a terminal, and Scum already has plenty of card draw mechanics.

Really you should drop Luke and get more droids.

12 points will net you R2. 3PO, MHD and Chopper,

then you'll have room for Saska, who is secretly the biggest Droid lover in the game. She can bring in 2 HK droids which the Rebel faction has been missing or the original IG88 which he can use to play Devotion on himself.

The new Droid cards really let this list shine

I find Chopper ineffective after the first "system shock". On the other hand, R2 is always annoying and hard to kill. My vote is R2.

I've had some pretty good success with running Chop into the fray and causing havoc in late game situations. The middle terminal on Anchorhead BW3's was probably the best for him. The terminals in the new Jawa map are also not far to the middle of the map, where Chop might be able to Ram an opponent's figure out from behind cover. Terminals on Nal Hutta are the worst, and he's pretty much only going to be terminal camping or running objectives without a ranged attack to defend himself.

The dream is Chopper attacking somebody like IG-88 with Focus... and Deathblow. LOL.

If we're dreaming, we might as well throw in Wild Attack with Element of Surprise to remove the white Die

I've seen the dream with a friend's R2 killing Vader getting 2 dmg on the roll then and surging for Pierce 2 against a Vader defense roll of 2 Def after foresight. :o (Was before Zillo though!)

Props for your friend to even attack Vader with R2! Too funny :P. Must have been desperate for that stun?
