Determination versus Harpoons? What is the order?

This came up several times last night. We played

That if a ship with determination got harpooned and then in turn suffered a unblocked crit, and drew a pilot crit which determination gets rid of you still get the harpooned condition.

Did we play this correctly?

Determination: When you are dealt a faceup Damage card with the Pilot trait, discard it immediately without resolving its effect.

Harpooned: When you are hit by an attack, if there is at least 1 uncanceled ?result, each other ship at Range 1 suffers 1 damage. Then discard this card and receive 1 facedown Damage card.

You are hit by the attack before any damage cards are dealt; and Determination never cancels crits, it just discards them. So yes, you would still take the harpooned damage.

Got it, but what if it the first time you are hit and just gain the harpoon condition? Would you still gain the condition. We assumed yes and then if the crit was a pilot crit you would discard the crit, but keep the condition.

Correct again. Determined is only discarding a dealt card not canceling a die result.

Edit: Also, there doesn't have to be an uncanceled critical result to receive the condition. You only have to be hit by the attack.

Exactly. You are "hit by an attack" if 'attackers hits & crits' > 'defenders evades'.

Even if you subsequently pull some jank out of your squad list such that no damage is dealt to the target (selflessness, prince xizor, draw their fire, determination, whatever) you still count as 'hit', and any 'if you hit' triggers still go off.

It would be the same with Lieutenant Blount - if he fires a harpoon missile at you, you always end up with the Harpooned! condition, even if he does no damage.

It's also worth noting that the card is still DEALT regardless of what happens to it afterwards.

So, Determination doesn't, for instance, stop Boba crew (triggered from a face up card being dealt) from working.

This is interesting. I had been assuming Draw Their Fire was a Harpoon missile counter, but reading the two cards, you're absolutely right that it isn't. Very interesting, thanks for clarifying that point.

Frankly, we should be collating these Q&A and complicated interpretation type topics into a single pinned faq forum topic. That way, we can have a pseudo forum approved compilation that can serve as an interim faq.

It would be convenient for event organisers as well, they can just refer to the pinned topic. TOs can also point out their own reinterpretations as exceptions (which is their right). I think it is probably easier to do that than to create an interpretation from scratch whenever one wants to run an event.

Plus, if said compilation gets too long, it could be another pressure to FFG to issue the next FAQ soonest. ;)
