Rebel Swarm (newbies first list)

By NoeF, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Trying my first rebel swarm list and need advice.

"Red Ace" — T-70 X-Wing 29 R2-D2 4 Integrated Astromech 0 Ship Total: 33
Blue Squadron Pilot — B-Wing 22 Ship Total: 22
Prototype Pilot — A-Wing 17 Chardaan Refit -2 Ship Total: 15
Captain Rex — TIE Fighter 14 Ship Total: 14
AP-5 — Sheathipede-class Shuttle 15 Courier Droid 0 "Chopper" (Astromech) 1 Phantom II 0 Ship Total: 16

I really like the idea of a rebel swarm (4+ ships) so I tried one. The idea is to have the T-70 and B-Wing as tanky damage dealers with Ap-5 to support the one needing an action the most. The A-Wing is there to be as annoying as possible and Rex slows down the most dangerous enemy with suppressive fire. I played it two times already with great success (although I might have been lucky).

So here some questions:

Is this viable in the Meta? - thinking about taking this list to my first tournament.

What would be my greatest weaknesses?

This doesn't really look like a swarm to me mainly because I see a lot of very different ships with lots of unique pilots (3/5), also I think that these ships don't get what they want in terms of upgrades. Additionally, swarms are not very good right now for a number of reasons, including but not limited to:

Bombs/mines

Harpoon Alpha strikes

etc.

If I were to change your list I would do something like this for a swarm:

Green Squadron Pilot [19]

A-Wing Test Pilot[0]

Snap Shot [2]

Juke [2]

Chardaan Refit [-2]

Vectored Thrusters [2]

Total [23]

Green Squadron Pilot [19]

A-Wing Test Pilot[0]

Snap Shot [2]

Juke [2]

Chardaan Refit [-2]

Vectored Thrusters [2]

Total [23]

Green Squadron Pilot [19]

A-Wing Test Pilot[0]

Snap Shot [2]

Juke [2]

Chardaan Refit [-2]

Vectored Thrusters [2]

Total [23]

Jess Pava [25]

R2-D6 [1]

Swarm Leader [3]

Integrated Astromech [0]

Grand Total {98}

(Add Tech of choice on Jess)

At my store, I also saw someone with four rebel ties, and a U wing, and flew it to reasonable success, however the Blue Squadron Pathfinder didn't really pull its weight.

These are just some ideas, anyway, enjoy!

My big worry is Red Ace without Comm Relay. RA's ability is pretty cool, but if your opponent simply doesn't shoot you again this turn, the Evade token just goes away. Comm Relay will allow you to keep it. If you don't have a TIE FO, just proxy a copy of CR. Without Comm Relay, I'd probably just drop down to a Red Squadron Veteran, or Jess Pava (she's really great in 4-ship lists) if you have Heroes of the Resistance. If you're playing casually with other players, grab a print-out of her card and use that instead, just to see how it works differently. Jess will hit a lot harder than Red Ace would, too. If all she has is R2-D2, she's probably still going to be about as tanky, since she'll have defensive rerolls.

If you're all-in on Red Ace and want Comm Relay, the issue is there's nowhere obvious to get the points from. To me, the weak link is probably AP-5. Perhaps swap that and the B-Wing for an Auzituck? Lowhhrick with Selflessness and either the Wookiee Commandos which comes in the box, or the combination of Maul and Ezra Bridger crew (it's in the Ghost, but proxy cards are great). Either Wookiees or Maul/Ezra will handle offensive dice mods for the Auzituck, while allowing you to use the Reinforce action for his pilot ability. This will protect the other ships from damage, as will Selflessness (I like it more than Draw Their Fire right now because of big missile strikes).

I don't have a bunch to say about the A-Wing. It'd be nice to get things like Snap Shot or Autothrusters on there.

I'm not sure the list has 1st place written on it, but it seems like a great thing to bring anyhow, since it'll show what works and what doesn't, and there'll be a lot to learn about the game. That said, any Jess Pava/Lowhhrick/Captain Rex/[any 4th ship] list probably can do OK.

I’m assuming you don’t have Jess Pava because she’s fantastic in any multi ship list.

I’d switch out the BSN for Jess.

Thanks all, I will try all of it and see what works best for me

Most things have already been addressed like Jess is a really good place to start with a swarm build for rebels. Counters are plentiful with bombs continually getting better and harpoon missiles being a ridiculous addition to the game to further discourage formation flying.

You may want more of the same type of ships because of the different dials. It's difficult to fly in formation when you have 5 different ships in your swarm. I'm sure you had some times playing when you had to do less than desirable flying just because they all didn't have the same maneuvers available.

Opponents that know better aren't going to joust you head on. They will make you turn and drag you through rocks or try to get you to bump your own ships. The longer you have to fly around with more ships the better the chances are of you having a bad first engagement.

Try to take the smallest asteroids and if your opponent takes large ones try to get them in the corners on your side preferably or theirs if you can as well.

Swarms can still be viable, there's just some hard counters that are pretty popular right now. Hope these tips help, good luck!

Also, don't forget that the B-wing can take Collision Detector for 0 points. It's not amazing but it'll stop you risking damage from Debris markers.

I actually know that the swarm is not that good at the moment but I really like flying them so I try to improve them for my playstyle.

Never played against Harpoon Missiles so I don't know how strong they are. So have harpoon heavy lists any weaknesses? Or what is played against them with success?

It's usually 2-3 ship builds with alpha strikes that pack the harpoons and something to trigger them in the same volley. For Rebels often Miranda and Nym pack them and Imperials almost every ship with a missile slot brings them along (Quickdraw and Vader most seen).

The best thing you can do against high PS ordnance is to try to fly in and block them or at least make it to range one for the first engagement. Strikers, A-Wings, and anything fast or with a boost really can do this. In fact if I had more strikers I might try flying them to counter all the harpoons around lately. You can still swarm them and get them up close and personal quickly.
