Does Thrawn Really Seem That Good?

Does Thrawn allow you to double-dial; ie. use a ship's own Nav dial in addition to a Nav dial from Thrawn, allowing an ISD to turn like a Raider (2x2yaw), or adding two dice with double Concentrated Fire, or 2x Engineering pionts to repair, or activating double the Squadron-value number of squadrons, for the ultimate Alpha strike from a Quasar Fire with Flight Controllers?

Imagine this, a quasar with expanded hanger bays, long range comms and flight controllers, using two dials and a token. Thats commanding 11 squadrons. And if they brought Howlrunner? Not even gallant haven and a Biggs bubble could stop that.

The harder thing is finding ships that compliment in terms of dial needs. Going heavy on Nav means you dont really want a Vic, going heavy on CF rules out a few others. Eng seems to be a cross fleet choice most often alongside squad.

Useful Thrawn ships with their favoured commands:

ISD - Nav, Squad, Eng (CF at a push, more so if a Kuat)
VSD - Squad, Eng, (CF at a push, Nav is basically pointless on a vic)
Interdictor - Eng, Squad, Nav if Engine Teching, CF if blue die criting
Glad - Nav, CF, Squad, Eng
Arq - Nav, CF, Squad (If Command varient), Eng

Not particularly useful ships:

Raider - Nav, CF, Eng sometimes
Quasar - Squad
Goz - Squad

Yeah pretty much, I'm not even going to bother trying to defend that controversial view. :)

I split my commands for the reasons Gink supposes. It works especially well with lists where the ships are the same type as they will synergize better with command options from Thrawn. This tactic will also work well with 3-4 Gladiator lists even the dreaded 5 Gozanti list. (My 3 Interdictor list even benefits)

Thrawn actually becomes much less efficient where you have a variety of ship types (3 or more types), when that is the case, I feel Thrawn starts to lose value.

You question my effectiveness, before you have actually played me...that is poor taste.

The point of this thread was to hear informed or unexpected opinions on the subject. I believe asking questions before going in is a great idea. During the game I managed to get in since, Thrawn did very little; however that could easily be blamed on how unfamiliar he was for me. I remain uncertain, but further testing is required. :)

I’ve tried him once on Vassal as a ‘use fighting ships as carriers’ crutch, which wasn’t very tactical geniusy but was pretty effective. It’s also something that no other imperial commander can do as well (tarkin can do it a bit) Something like in the below:

Thrawn sets three squad commands, the kittens all bank bags then conc fire for additional dice, hey presto big gunline plus big fighter wing with ‘come and get me’ objectives.
