Epic Enthusiasts, Unite! (and Unified League Rules Discussion)

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

So, at some point, I vaguely remember that the devs said if we all wanted something, we should make noise about it. If I'm wrong, well, it worked for the gunboat anyways.

Since I'm stuck home NYE with a cold, this is the only horn I'm going to get to blow.

So, who wants more Epic?? Do you just want more Huge ships? Missions?? Smaller ships that are Epic only?? Actions that are Epic only (like maybe Boarding Actions)?? Could we even just ask for an FAQ???!!!

I see a lot of posts by people claiming Epic was the most fun they ever had playing XWM. Are you one of them?

I SAY WE DEMAND MORE OF IT!!

Updated FAQ!

This is all I really want. Epic is in dire need of a FAQ.

Played epic twice. Loved it both times.

Will play more epic this new year.

Will gladly pick up any new epic stuff that comes out.

FAQ, Braha'tok gunship (There's one in Rogue 1), Hammerhead corvette. Rules and cardboard to turn a long table edge into an imp capitol ship.

Huzzah! Epic is awesome!

i want a new and improved FAQ, a scum corvette of some kind, and some new epic only game mechanics. Maybe a squadron bonus of some sort that only works for a group that is the same ship model (minimum and max requirements), maybe an objective style format similar to what the podcasts cooked up for 100/6. Or maybe a campaign box like corellian campaign for armada

they need a 2nd Scum ship first, get that faction on equal standing. then they can do a "2nd cycle" of epics with a third epic ship for each. probably all smaller single hull card stuff for simplicity.

Epic is fantastic! May we get not one but two or even three Epic expansions this year!

I think we need to get rid of or update the bumping rules though - a CR-90 shouldn't absolutely obliterate a VCX-100 but the VCX-100 do no damage to a TIE Fighter. And a new FAQ would be nice.

C'mon, think big. As in EPIC!!

Agreed. We lost almost all of our cool Epic Only stuff to small ships this year: Coordinate, Reinforce, Jam.

We need something that's Epic only again.

Maybe small ships get obliterated but large ships take 3-4 face up damage. I mean, it should still be very bad to get run over. Especially since ramming is a oft-used tactic.

I like this. For large ships it’s bad. For small it’s catastrophic.

I think a cr90 or raider could obliterate a large base maybe. But the Gozanti or c-roc doing it to a vcx does seem silly.

Why stop there, we can have more than 6 different huge ships.

Maybe square the difference in hull size and deal facedown damage to the smaller ship equal to the result? So large ships deal one facedown damage to small ships, huge ships deal one facedown damage to large ships, and huge ships deal four facedown damage to small ships? That will still kill most small ships if hit. And maybe add a huge ship modification that doubles ramming damage or something? I understand it game-balance wise (sometimes), but I just always felt like it was odd that bumping isn't a big deal for any combination of ships except Epic ships.

epic is interesting but epic ships are so lousy on the table its laughable compared to how expensive they are.

Fortunately its possible to fix epic ships as a whole without changing a single card text. Really hope they revamp the general huge ship rules, theyre far too expensive for effectively doing less than a typical large ship does. Originally i didnt care because of the sheer giddyness of using a massive ship compared to the rest of the game, but man are they easy to take out....

E P I C!

my 2 cents:

-Huge ships hulls should be harder to damage with normal fire. Each should have 1 permanent reinforce when being attacked by a ship 2 sized smaller; and do an extra damage when attacking a ship 2 sizes smaller.

-A way to convert the Ghost and Batwing to have energy.

-agree with @Vineheart01 , epic ships are too expensive. Maybe count them outside of the 300, at least the base cost.

Go epic!

To be fair, official Star Wars lore says you can knock out a Super Star Destroyer with a single A-Wing. You can knock out several planet-sized battle stations with snubfighters. Large ships and battle stations provide superior firepower but require fighter cover. This is true IRL, too. An aircraft carrier would fall quickly without its fighter support.

I'm expanding on FFG's rule change sheet for Epic to try to make it no longer need gentleman's agreements to function. Thoughts on this?

Epic Play Card Restrictions-

The following cards now have limits on the maximum number of copies that can be included in a squadron:

- Crack Shot-6
- Tactician-5
- Juke-4
- Deadeye-4
- Twin Laser Turret-4
- Harpoon Missile-4
- Hyperwave Comm Scanner-4
- Trajectory Simulator-3
- Operations Specialist-3
- Minefield Mapper-3

This section describes restrictions and changes to card text in Epic X-Wing Games:

- Navigator can not be equipped to huge ships
- Zuckuss can not be equipped to huge ships
- Maul can not be equipped to huge ships
- Biggs Darklighter’s pilot ability does not affect huge ships. Small and medium ships may attack huge ships that are at Range 1 of Biggs Darklighter, and huge ships treat Biggs Darklighter’s card text as blank when attacking
- In Epic play, Lieutenant Dormitz's ability reads "During Setup, other friendly ships may be placed anywhere in the play area at range 1 of you."

What did I miss?

I’ll take a FAQ, an Epic campaign and a Hammerhead corvette for starters. A Dornean gunship, DP-20 Frigate, the Carrion Spike, a Crusader corvette and Epic shipwrecks (like the Space Rocks wrecks) would be nice as well. If I’m dreaming, an official FFG Nebulon-B Frigate, Lancer-class Frigate and Arquitens Cruiser would be fantastic.

Right i understand that the larger ships arent suppose to be great at dealing with fighters. After all in any scifi setting where fighters are a thing, theyre around purely because they take out capital ships so much easier than other capital ships.

But they also support their fighters. Theres very little the huge ships do that help other ships without leaving them extremely vulnerable (coordinate instead of reinforce for example). Again, random small or large ships geared out to be supporty do more work.

I just want a reason to use a huge ship thats not just "LOOK AT HOW BIG IT IS!!" - because that wore off after a few months.

Epic is a different way to play, swarm and generics pilots shine on this mode.

We need a huge epic Scum (or a small epic to feat with their nature), more missions, once you finish any official campaign is difficult to have the surprise again.

More specific actions and a faq to confirm is small ship ability work with epic ships.

Happy New Year all!

This is an excellent starting point. First of all I’d like them to consider some crazy interactions and considering whether they are balanced and thematic. For example pilot abilities such as Captain Jonus and Airen Cracken - those small ship abilities just don’t feel right affecting a huge ship. Decoy is an Elite Talent which springs to mind as a card that should work from a smaller ship to a huge ship. And then we have the ridiculous scum cards: Zuckuss and Maul. There only disadvantage is stress which doesn’t affect huge ships. At least cards like Hux and Fleet Officer take up an action. The only thought I’ve had regarding cards you choose to use that cause stress and don’t cost an action is that the huge ship receives an equivalent number of Ion tokens so it effectively has an energy cost. Like @Kaptain Krunch I’ve probably missed a load more but it just highlights how the designers are neglecting Epic :( .

As an absolute minimum the tournament rules need to be updated to make the C-ROC and Gozanti legal. I also think that the tournament rules should stipulate that a minimum number of 2 Epic points must be spent. This will help somewhat to balance games (where of course a 300 point list of small ships will mow down your Raider). I know tournaments aren’t really a big thing for Epic but the rules are a useful for casual games.

The best huge ships in my experience are the Gozanti and... Transport. The Gozanti Docking Clamps are amazing (just needs an errata to use more ship types). The Transport is such a nuisance messing all sorts of things up I hate that thing. The Raider and CR90 I do find a little less interesting gameplay wise. In this respect they could borrow from Armada and have upgrade cards that either allow the equivalent of an anti-squadron battery (a low powered attack against everything in an arc) or a counter attack (a low powered attack that triggers each time after the huge ship is attacked). This would make them much more prickly.

OK well the obvious is more ships. Imperials will struggle here. We just don’t have enough ships of that size. The IGV-55 Listener Ship is the only canon one I can think of. Maybe something can be done around the Zeta-class cargo shuttle? Rebels though have many choices. However without a doubt the Hammerhead should be the next one, after its prominent role in Rogue One, and of course then we need the Braha'tok-class gunship which has now been in two films.

Otherwise I’ll bore myself by repeating - official campaign of the same calibre as the Armada Correllian Conflict required.

History has shown that capital ships, without air cover, are easy to kill. And expensive. From that perspective, I think Epic is spot on. Someone mentioned removing the base cost of the ship from the allotted squad points as a way to reduce their cost which I think would be effective.

Sasajak has said most things already. (Except Cracken's ability already doesn't work - no free actions for huge ships).

I'd like huge ships to be able to get and use focus tokens.

I am a big, Big, BIG fan about Double Epic Cinematic. Team play, 4 to 6 players, really awesome experience. During circa 2 years we played 2 or 3 games of this magnitude each month. Now only one because we re started Historic Advanced Squad Leader and this is also a time consuming hobbie.

Epic, to my taste, is were X Wing shines.

-Many ships on the table. Not a mere 2 vs 3. 20, 30 models, 3D rocks. Star Bases. Etc.

-Cinematic. Not simply engage and destroy. Protect that VIP. Destroy the weapons cache. Scan that derelicted unknown wreck floating in space... When you loose 11 of 12 scorting X Wings and Y Wings but Dash Rendar jumps to light speed saving the VIPs and you win...

-No max your points. A "Referee" writes the scenario. We see a huge variety of ships on the table. And Create your Own of course. New EPTs. Squadron titles. Fan made cards...

-And a social way of enjoying the game. Laughting with long term friends. And sometimes with their sons and women. Or co workers and their sons.

So...enjoy Epic game.

I really must read the rules! We banned Cracken from Epic after someone played this interaction  he also had Decoy so a CR90 with PS8 and an extra action... still my 2 TIE/D ions and 4 Interceptors shredded the corvette and Cracken. He can come back now sans Decoy working on huge ships (meaning he won’t come back)
