considering a scratch built epic, would like some input

By mithril2098, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I recently got an itch to scratch build an Epic.. but my scratch building skills are, mediocre and my access to materials limited. so i went around looking for designs i could probably build from cardboard and other junk and still produce something decent.

As a big SW:Rebels fan, this ship came to mind right away. the Class IV Container Transport, which as basically a big tetrahedron towing a bunch of boxes. should be easy enough. and i figured, if i got lucky on the scale, i could use my storage case (a 12x12x9.5in plastic ornaments case) as the cargo frame, make it a decorative storage system too.

so i decided step one was to figure out dimensions.. and there i hit a snag, in that i can't find any given dimensions. none at all. given it shares a bridge with the Arquitens design wise, i'd say it is probably less than the Arquitens's 325m length (not including the cargo assembly), but i'm not sure by how much.

so i was hoping maybe someone here had found a listing of the size somewhere, or had worked out the size themselves?

(i suppose i could just build one whatever size and give it a new designation.. but i'm counting that as 'plan B')

Assuming they have the same bridge I'd estimate the Class IV to be roughly 60% of the length of the Ariquitens (30 bridges long versus about 18 bridges long) not including the cargo assembly.

200 metres I'd say is in the right ballpark.

since it looks to be about as wide and tall as it is long, using the (roughly) 1/500 scale of the CR90 and Raider, it would be about 16 inches long, and about that wide and tall?

i'd also considered the Alderaanian War Frigate , like the Another Chance , but that thing would be nearly 20 inches long, and looks a little trickier to build.

working out the scales, i'm kinda intimidated by the size of these things. maybe i should start smaller, like maybe the Omega Class Freighter ? it looks like it would be about the size of the FFG GR75. if that works out i can build upwards.

The big gaping maw of the escort carrier!

The Gozanti-class cruiser is actually not all that hard to build. The frame is pretty simple, plus there would be less stuff you'd have to invent, such as ship cards, figuring out firing arcs, titles for the ship, etc if you plan to use it as an Epic ship. The hard part is the details, so have fun. :P

I've also spotted a list online of many many ships with their lengths listed, which is awesome, but I haven't seen it today after hunting for it. At least if you went with the container transport, people would have a chance to recognize it since it's been in Rebels.

Otherwise, go for it! It's not terribly difficult to scratch build stuff and the only way you'll get better is by trying, messing something up and doing it better next time! In my also limited scratchbuilding experience I've not really spent much money, I just keep my eyes peeled for plastic, cardboard, and styrofoam that I can has for free.

Aha! I found it! There are a lot of ships on this list. For Epic, simply consider ships predominantly under the Shuttle, Freighters, and Transports category. Most of the others are starfighter/light freighter class or much to big to manage for X-Wing at even 1/300 scale.

P.S. This post is more fitting for the Painting and Modification portion of the forums, just for future reference.

originally it was a simple information request, but kinda morphed. since it is still more of a discussion of intent rather a log of actual construction, i'm not sure if it belongs in the painting forum.

the need to design cards is a longer term concern, but i grabbed a copy of a card builder to play around with later. i figure the main use of this would be as terrain using the "epic ships as obstacles" rules. (which thankfully can be found online)

at the moment i'm still leaning towards the Omega class, for its simplicity. might have to use a different cockpit design though. :)

well i managed to find some stuff that would make things a little easier.. a papercraft AT-AT walke r that has a body that should be close to the right size (would make the resulting ship similar to the GR-75's scale), and a site with some papercraft imperial shuttles . still working on scale (you'd have to print them at 150% to be around 1:270) but that should provide a cockpit easy enough.

still trying to figure out some of the other features (fins, and the undercarriage drive hardware) but i figure i can probably adapt some of the leftover parts from the papercraft printings. it'll end up with mismatched colors on the parts.. but that would just make it look make it look more like a tramp freighter, IMO.

i also found an old old thread here with a 1/270 and 1/350 scale nebulon-B in papercraft. that might be a future project.
