Your Year in Review

By wurms, in X-Wing

This topic was pretty awesome idea @wurms !

2017 started pretty fun and nice with the Tatooine open which I went 4-3 with my Double YV-666 & Fenn. Since there was no list that really drew my attention I kept playing that one until I reached the point I didn't really have thaat much fun with it, but nothing else was really interesting me enough. Then Nym dropped and I was one of the dirty many to play Dengar Nym, won a store championship (although a small one) and got several top4's, I was getting prepped for Spanish Nationals when the FAQ (a well deserved FAQ) showed up and wrecked my list, like 1 month before the nationals... from there it was a rush to find a good list that I enjoyed playing, tried a ton of stuff and enventually came to Twin Shadows, and did 2-2 on a SC 2 weeks before the nationals, which got me down a little, so I was hoping to get 3-3 in that bigger tourney, so imagine my surprise when I got 2nd place in it.

I think I evolved alot in my abilty to pilot but kind of lost my capacity to do 'stupid and fun' lists as I can't stop thinking about what's best agaisnt the current meta, and I still don't know if that's good or not.

My favourite list this year was.... probably my dog pound, which is the YV-666 and Fenn list (Party Bus, K4 Slaver, PTL Fenn), and although I grew tired of it, it was pretty awesome to fly (although not the most efficient) and it uses two of my fav ships.

I loved Nym, despite all the hate, and although it was kind of op at first, I had lots of fun flying it with AS.

I think Low + Biggs was probably the combo I hated most this year, as it was easy to fly and annoying to play agaisnt and I was rather dissapointed with the Kimogilia, I still haven't tried it to it's max, but not sure it's that good of a ship.

For next year I would like to win a decently large store chamionship, which I think I can.

The Great Nerfering and the arrival of the Gunboat !

Best year for X-Wing!

I played far too much X-Wing this year.

Did quite well in a couple of GNK and Store tournaments. Went to the Yavin System Open, European Championships and UK Nationals, crashing and burning in all three results wise, but still had a blast. I did better in the Hangar Bays than the main tournaments! Met a couple of the forum members, had a lot of fun, that's the main thing.

Faction wise, my year was split pretty much 50-50 between Scum and the Empire., with Protectorates, the Shadow Caster, JM5K and TIE Defenders being the ships of choice. My last couple of store events were spent flying triple Defenders, which have been doing quite well for me.

2017 ended with a couple of Christmas presents from FFG - namely the release of the GUNBOAT, and confirmation that I'd managed to get a ticket for the 2018 UK System Open. So, with a couple of events booked already, 2018 already looks like it's going to be another fun year!

So, 2017 was my first full year of playing. I discovered that if I fly a 'good' list, I can win a store championship and make most cuts. Then it's 50/50.

However, I also discovered that flying a heap of junk and doing slightly better than most people expect my rubbish list to perform is much more fun.

I'm currently pondering whether to use Porkins in my main system open list (so I lose quickly) or merely in the Hanger Bay and Hyperspace competitions.

By this time I've been playing now for about 1.75 years, and have to say that this year I really did finally feel like I was hitting my stride. The reason I say that is a little while back, I was playing my local store regulars, guys that were playing there when I first walked in with nothing but a core set, and against one of them, I had him cursing under his breath and then congratulating me for outflying him turn after turn. The next game I took down another long time player's list down to one ship without losing a single one of mine, and then we called it on time. Using my tracker app, I noticed I was running like recently 4:1 W:L compared to last year when I was often 1:4.

I didn't do any major tournaments other than the Campaign Against Cancer which I bombed at 1-5 running a rebel jank list I had never played before. Honestly, other than for academic reasons, I don't really have my eyes set on high end organized tournament X-Wing anymore.

My favorite list was Quickdraw, Backdraft, and Lt. Kestal.

I had a great year. Ups, downs, losses, wins, lots of new friends...learned alot.

Bring on the new year. 2018 X-Wing goal is to go 100% undefeated for 12 months. Realistic goals are for chickens not owls.

You also managed to make 1,700+ posts since you started playing the game this year. That alone is pretty impressive! :) Look at the post counts for all the other guys that have started this year. Heck, look at me- I’ve been playing X-Wing and browsing the forums for 4 Years now and I just barely passed 1k.

It's all about quality, not quantity, so you're in a good spot, Hero. As is @Celestial Lizards .

Totally agree. The game is in a great place right now for balance and diversity.

My goal is to not go 100% defeated for 12 mos. *sigh*

Anyhoo, by 2017 XWM highlight was to play in public for the first time ever at GenCon. It was great to play a narrative campaign with the Shuttle Tydirium crew and meet some of the folks that post on these boards.

Started playing X-Wing :D

So I would say it was a great year.

For me, 2017 marked my second year with the game (I got in the day before the blue core set dropped) and the start of my X-wing instagram account ( shameless plug here )! I also started to get my friends into the game and started dragging them to tournaments.

But most of my 2017 x wing-ing was done online. I participated in season 5 of the vassal league, and Shuttle Tydirium's narrative campaign.

2017 highlights

  • Running tournaments locally, adjusting into role of leading local store events
  • Discovering the joy of dice yatzee. If you're not going to win tournaments, you might as well not win tournaments in style. 4 TIE Phantoms and go!
  • Wait. I actually won a tournament? Fancy dice!
  • GenCon Shuttle Tydirium narrative 4-0 record with Y-wings and Janson.
  • Nationals run. Wait, I'm actually making the cut? What the heck...
  • Learned Vassal. Vassal Tydirium event. Season 9.
  • Won a kit tournament! With Wedge!
  • Acknowledging my faults as a player. My mistakes and putting thoughts on how to improve.

A good one for me:

1 regional finished 8th after going 5-1 in Swiss.

2 system series open going 6-1 & 5-2.

I got to worlds for the first time going 5-2.

3 store champs going 4-1 (and winning). 5-0 (losing in the top 4) and 3-1 ending up runner up.

My competitive Swiss record for the season was 33-8 which I’m more than happy with.

my favourite list was:

Fenn + ptl, title and autothrusters

Ndru + VI, concussion missile, scavenger crane, guidance chips

Gen Red + VI, mangler cannon, heavy cannon title

Sunny Bounder + light title.

I love four ship lists and I fully intend on shifting focus to the gunboats and imperials after a competitive season o only running scum.

I took a large chunk of the second half of the year off following the release of Nym and bomblet generator. I’m amazed it made it through playtesting. A very low moment for the game designers that I hope they have now rectified with the FAQ.

Campaign boxes would be a great chance for FFG to bring pilot cards and upgrades (and fix some injustices and unbalance) without the need of repainted minis. Not to mention they would breath a whole new life to the game.

Like: imagine Battle of Scarif "Scenario Pack", with X-Wing Blue Squadron pilot cards, X-Wing title, Y-Wing elite pilots, K-2SO U-Wing pilot and crew, TIE Striker bomb upgrade (modification?), etc.

The only answer to the question is: Gunboat! :)

2017 has been a real roller coaster for me!

January came around and my business partner and house mate showed his true colours. I left part ownership of my FLGS and had a serious amount of harassment in an attempt to discredit me pre-emptivley. The guy was keen to make sure no one would believe me should I tell the truth about why we really parted ways. The stress caused made my health problems worse. This really made playing locally a very depressing experience for me in all honesty. I play for fun not for a load of bull ****. I got my fix from playing HotAC with a couple of friends until store champs season kicked in, with the exception of Exeter regionals.

First regionals; went 4-2 with awful MOV using a list I’d never played before that used 2 ships I’d never flown. Considering I hadn’t played in 3 months due to being super busy with the shop; I was happy with that.

I went to every SC I could make it to locally. First one; got ruined. 31st our of 32. Second one; got 3nd out of 16. Third; was really unwell and couldn’t make it. Fourth; screwed myself badly. Was 3-0 going into the final round of Swiss and took an early lead. Looked on track for a 100-0 win and then flew Dengar and Fenn off the board dropping me from 1st to 7th missing the top 4 cut. Let myself down there but I only really wanted to short range rulers anyways so can’t complain really.

The league I’ve run for the last 2 years is pretty much dead; a boycott from local players who obviously would rather judge me based on my antagonists rubbish as opposed to holding a conversation with me. But...

Playing in my home city is on the up as a new store has opened where I can play free of the BS from my former business partner and just enjoy it again. I’m going to run events for them in 2018 and see if I can build another community.

I’ve won about 6 kit tourneys this year including an escalation tourney which was the first time I’ve played escalation. Been to a lot of limited wave or original trilogy events too, I really enjoy the challenge of building a list without the meta optimisers there to fall back on. Fenn/Dengar/inaldra has been the most fun list live played this year but currently loving kylo and gunboats!!

I don’t think I’ve actually got better at the game, if anything my piloting has probably suffered this year from all the drama and life problems that were tacked on to toy soldiers and spaceships. What all this has made me realise is; I still love x-wing. Playing this game and blood bowl have been the only things that have kept me sane.

My life is back in a good spot now and I’m looking forwards to playing lots of x-wing in 2018 whether it’s tournaments, silly jank or HotAC. I don’t really have any goals for 2018 other than to keep smiling and enjoying playing!

Thank you to everyone who I’ve played, talked to on here and who’s run the events I’ve attended this year! Happy New Year y’all!!!!!

2017 marked an expansion of my X-Wing playing in many ways. I took more time to learn the intricacies of play in my second year. I pushed away from netlisting as much and started really playing around with my own ideas, although I still look to see what is being played most often or effective builds on ships.

I played my first (two) epic games, probably the most fun I’ve had with X Wing. I have a great group of friends from work who play, and discussing the game and playing awesome team epic games is great fun.

I’m a better player, although not a great player (as flying my Sheathipede off the board yesterday in a close game proves.)

My favorite list I flew this year has to be an epic list that had a gozanti, TLT aggressors, missile boat tie bombers, and a crack swarm with QD support. Amazingly fun and won an epic game for the first time.

I love the Sheathipede. I think it is a great, unique design for the Rebel faction, and brings coordinate into an affordable range. Its function in a list has some parallels to my real world job, which is fun. I don’t really hate any recent ships.

My Xwing resolution is to play my first regional.

Flew the heck out of my Ghost this year. Won a few local tournaments but only placed in top 8 for a larger tournament down south.

I find Nym too easy to play and a bit broken so have avoided what I thought was going to be my favorite ship this year and instead have really enjoyed flying the Phantom 2! Easily favorite ship of the year and so many different ways to play it. Turn a basic Lothal Ghost into an epic with end of activation coordinate. Stress the heck out of people with Ezra. High PS coordinate an allied ship to boost away from trouble with Fenn. Remove stress from your friends with AP (he's become the literal must-include for his cheap points, stress-saving and sturdiness for his cost).

My wife has enjoyed flying circles around me with Kylo, and she still hates bombs and wants an Imperial ace bomb fix which I agree with.

The first nerf of Palpatine we felt sucked and was unneeded but the latter nerf of Jumpmasters was incredible!

2017 has treated me well. I only started in like late-spring/early-summer 2016, so I haven't been playing too long, but I feel like I've been improving.

My results in my last few tournaments have been pretty good. Until my last four, I don't think I'd done better than mid ranks. 2-2 typically. Totally pooched one store championship with a 1-3 Redline/Oicunn list that was both a bad decision and one I made a bunch of mistakes with (I had PS over the swarm and Engine upgrade! just arc dodge!). Not very large tourneys, usually in the 6 to 16 range, but went 2-1 late this summer (OT with DTF/R2D2 Luke + generic B/B/X; Heragator) coming in 2nd (3rd with Hera? I don't recall) in both, then 3-0 with Tactician Auzitucks and 4-0 Escalation Palp Defenders for ending my year on two wins. There's a bunch of luck in there, but luck is a skill. It was also a wise decision for me to stop flying K-Wings. I love Miranda, but I think I'm better without her.

My favorite new ship has been a janky as f*** Cassian Andor build. Expert Handling, Advanced Sensors, Kyle, Inspiring Recruit, title, and Experimental Interface at 39 points. It's absurd. Pre-move barrel rolls with focus/focus/TL and ending without stress. I've been pairing him with a bog standard Expertise Rey using debris obstacles, and I like that combo a bunch.

I stopped playing Spring 2016 and this year I have only played 2 nights of X-Wing since TLJ was released.

I still love the game and I’m looking forward to coming back to the competitive scene in 2018.

2017 was huge for me.... I had just started playing fall 2016.

First time playing in store tournaments or anywhere in public at all. Met new people because of xwing. Played my first epic and found out how much I love it - played HotAC and found out I loved it too.

favorite 2017 lists were Paratanni with a Gand Findsman plus FCS instead of Manaroo, and my current favorite, Dash & Poe.

my ultimate favorite goes to an epic fleet I built using my shiny cr90. I think my best singular day though was playing through the entire c-roc campaign in one day.

Gunboats and Deathrain. Seriously, gunboats are amazing and bombletts made Deathrain a real force that nobody ever expects or even pays attention to until he wrecks their face.

2017

Bought too much.

Played too little.

My X-Wing year was pretty good. Won our local RivCo champion Tour again. Played a million different lists and just enjoyed the game. There was a period where I hated playing, Nym/Fairship, but those times seem to have faded and X-Wing seems new again. Gonna be going to a Regional this upcoming weekend and am excited. Also got to host a 28 person Toys for Tots Tournament that was a huge success and was a much different experience being TO instead of a player. Overall great year, I also got engaged so was an even better year in my regular life!
