The Battle of Scarif in XWM scale

WOW!!!

2017 was good year for X-Wing. I have bought some new ships. Absolute highlight of these however is the recent Resistence Bomber as I have great fun with it. It's a BLAST! Other ships I got was the Rebel Transport for Birthday (thanks again, my clubmates), Protectorate Starfighter for anniversary (thanks my dear) and other ships I bought on impulse. I have attended several events and most of them went quite well for me (the best was third place on a Store Championship) and I enjoyed all of them. I have made very nice deals on the trade thread on this forum and I made three new good friends thanks to x-wing. Last year was great!

For 2018, I plan to start a record of my games. Just a very short summary of which ships I had, what my opponent had, who won and which ships worked well. It will help me find errors in my ways. I am still not really sure if I want to invest in Scum even more. I mostly play Resistence with few rebels and then I tend to play Boba Fett + something. I would have to make my mind on the metter of investments as I am quite short on cash. Also I don't want to drop my conviction that I will only buy and fly ships and pilots I like, no matter the meta.

My wife also had very good year in X-Wing. She got in the game and got some nice ships she likes (mostly OT stuff). She got her hands on AA Corran Horn - pilot she loves the most (I am even a little jealous). She decided to go to tournaments, her first experience was Czech Nationals (where she did better then I did). Due to this fact, she got deeper into the games mechanic and tactical thinking which improved her game a lot. I would say she is now No.2 in our group pilot-wise.

2017 started pretty fun and nice with the Tatooine open which I went 4-3 with my Double YV-666 & Fenn

I played you in the 6th round of Day 1. Very tough list! I was lucky Fenn blanked and got shot down by my HLsCyk really soon

so imagine my surprise when I got 2nd place in it.

I couldn't make it to the Nationals this time but I watched your streamed games and was happy to see you getting that far. Congratulations!

My 2017 was just awesome. I had just won my first Tournament Kit late December 2016 and I won my 2nd Tournament kit early 2017.

I went 4-2 in the Madrid Regionals missing the cut by 40 MOV, and had a blast in the Tatooine Open a month later, going 5-2 (after going to lunch with a 1-2 record). I was 34th going into Day 2, and though I couldn't make it to the Top 8, I got lots of goodies, and had a great time. I also went 4-2 and missed the cut by 23 MOV in the Asturias Regional, but an unlucky "best-friend-gets-married-on-Nationals-day" meant I couldn't make it to the Spanish Nationals. I feel I have improved as a player, but there's still lots of work to be done in 2018, where I'll try to make the cut in a big event, and maybe try and win a Store Championship.

Discovered the game in early to mid 2017.

By year's end:

Got one (and sometimes more) of every Empire ship.

Participated in one local tournament (placing 4th or 5th).

Replaced video games with X-wing.

Had fun every step of the way.

Regret nothing.

Now that it’s 2018 I am ready for an even better year....

1. Going to Adepticon’s System Open

2. If I can squeeze it in, going to ffg regionals in a few weeks

3. Have plans to get some more epic and more HotAC in as well as more standard game.

4. Will be running a DagobahDave’s trench run in just a few weeks for a gaming group at my work.

Fantastic X-Wing year for me!

1) Went to 4 tournaments this year:

a) Local Campaign Against Cancer and finished 6th.

b) Store championship and made it to the final table but lost and finished 4th because of MOV.

c) Took TALONBANE COBRA to a tournament and Mrs. Rick came along. I lost all my games and she finished higher than me.

d) Played in an Original Trilogy tournament and finished 5th.

2) I got Mrs. Rick hooked on X-Wing.

a) She usually beats me.

b) She loves the GUNBOAT.

3) My much older brother started playing and is already very deep into it.

a) Happened over Christmas.

4) Very sad that FFG did not do a regional here in my area even though the X-Wing community here is growing.

2017 was a roller coaster. Got second in my first Store Champs of the year, usually I place mid of the pack previously. Ripped it up with A-Wings until the release of Nym, enjoyed two top 8 kit tournament finishes and had a lot of fun. Nym came out and that wave ruined my will to live. I was determined to keep my A-Wings alive and gave up on them after it was too late with 2 last place store kit finishes. I became known as the gimmicky jank guy and the A-Wing guy locally, kind of cementing of my place in the group. (only been playing for 2 years) and really finding my play style to go along with it. Finding and tweaking odd combo lists and doing surprisingly well with them. As I get set for my first regional in 2 weeks, I'm torn between using some rebel jank that I'm known for, or flying something more established in the meta with my own swing to it.

My top lists of 2017:

Jess and the Snaps! : Jess Pava w/swarm leader, Jan Ors, 2 Green Squad A-Wings with Juke/Snap shot (70%ish W/L record, with most losses after the release of Nym)

Rey/Cassian: Various builds, but either Cassian as a bomber or janky Expert Handling/Insp. Recruit/Kyle Kartan/Experimental Interface. 50/50 WL, top 8 cut, first round elimination in 18 player group

The gunboats and Kylo have drawn me into the imperial fold.

We saw the loss of arguably our best play space and an amazing host due to the economy. Luckily he has started coming out to play once in a while lately. Our largest playspace we currently have maybe on the way out too... we have a few smaller venues we enjoy and are filling up, so things are not all bleak.

I still hate Nym, I still hate Shadowcasters. I never minded the jump master.

I love my A-Wings, I love the new Gunboats, Jan Ors in her Hawk, and I love Jank!

Lists I can't wait to unleash in 2018:

Wedge/Jan/Fenn - currently my favorite rebel list, fly it perfectly and it does very very well. make a mistake and be punished

Jan/Keyan/Wes

Ten Numb/Nym

Bringing named B-Wings into the realm of destruction!!!!!!! I may take my Jess and the Snaps out again for a run now that bombs have died down... but those harpoons... oh do they hurt!

Actually got to a reasonable number of events and surprised myself by not doing badly.

TIE Strikers are an absolute joy to fly en masse, and seem to be good fun (if frustrating as buggery) to fly against - I got 5 as the only thing I bought from their wave, have used them pretty much exclusively and haven't regretted it for a moment.

SLAM-cannoning gunboats might, just might, be more fun (plus, you know, Gunboat ) but that's the only thing I can see making me want to swap.

Won 2 store championships, a regional, a national, can't complain! :P

Had a very quiet 2017. Played one (yep, just one) game against a couple of friends one weekend back in October.

Need to play more and definitely would like a crack at a tournament (just to play several games in a day!!!)

A pretty good year, for me. Had some of my best tournament results including second at Gaming Versus Cancer (I got SO lucky that day), second in a store championship, and general improvements overall. I've still never actually *won* anything yet though. I finally abandoned my insistence on running stuff that's outside the meta but of my own design, and just ran meta ships, and lo and behold, started doing well.

Had a great time at the big tourneys, Yavin, Euros, and UK Games Expo.

Painted a bunch of ships, got a lot of complements about them.

Began production of some small runs of laser cut tokens of my own design I intend to start selling in the near future.

A good year overall, albeit with a bit of a dip in certain times due to meta concerns.

Looking forward to Regionals in just under two weeks (the only one I'll be able to attend) and the UK System Open and Euros are going to be great again. Shaping up to be a good year going forward, too.

TOO MUCH!!!!

To me X-Wing is imploding and going supernova. Big price hikes for what get out of the ships meant few new ship purchases. At the same time those new ships come with all sorts or MUST HAVE upgrade that add to the ever more complicated game making it so much harder to understand. And while so many of you seem to be overjoyed by them all those massive nerfs have really taken a lot of the fun I had with those older ships away.

This forum has gone from more than daily visits to something more akin to "what's this link I have in my browser favorites section?"

F*** you :P

And congrats!

It was a 2017 of highs and lows, for sure.

  • First year of no playtesting since 2014, so new ships are, you know, new ships. On balance, that's a big plus.
  • First year I didn't make the cut (and drop) in a Regional. (Missed the cut on another player's perfect double-Evade roll.)
  • Ironically, also the first time I played in the cut in a Regional. (8th place dropped. My buddy was playing, so I moved up from 9th and played, and lost a very close and fun game against Imperial Aces with my anti-JM5K list.)
  • Played in five or six Store Championships, with a different list (and almost no practice) every time. 1st, 3rd, top 4 (drop), top 8, and *mumble*mumble*.
  • Saw the bottom fall out of my local meta, with previously die-hard players and organizers dramatically lessening their participation due to frustration with the game and ... other stuff.
  • Eventually, I followed their lead. I think I went three months or so without playing a game.
  • The " Great Pretty Good Nerfening" brought me back. There was a small component of stupid to it, but hey, that's just FFG. 90% good is a goddamn A+ for them, as far as I'm concerned.
  • I've played a couple of kit tournaments and done very well, winning one and getting 3rd in the other, again playing different lists with zero actual practice. Most importantly, having fun. Harpoon Missiles are little out of whack, but on the whole, the meta is as wide open as I've seen it in a long time.

So, 2018?

  • I'm playing a Regional in February, and a System Open in May. The latter was a total impulse sign-up, and definitely an indication that I feel much better about the game than I have in a while.
  • Started 2017 by getting whooped by Paratanni. Even though it was a super efficient list, I could still walk away not feeling cheated. I can't say that for some of the other lists going on around the same time.
  • I went on a 3-4 month losing streak after the Great Nerfing early last year.
  • Despite this, I entered my first store championship and came out last of the last: 34th of 34. And once I came out the other side I had a new perspective: Win or lose, play what I want and just enjoy the game.
  • Saw the local scene evaporate late Spring down to just 3 or 4 regulars, possibly due to? Fari Ship Rebels and Genius+Nym didn't help the situation.
  • Got frustrated with the leak & lack of FAQ. Can we please get one every 6 months or so? April and October, May/Novembber--whatever--just a regular "State of the Nation" for X-wing, so we know FFG cares about us.
  • I finally "saw the matrix" and I feel I've turned a corner on my playing.

Favorite lists this year: TIE/D Vessery & Ryad + Omega Leader and Deathfire, Zeta Leader, Dark Curse & Inquisitor--fun list that has some bite.

2018 will see me at my first Regional in March. I will definitely do Store Champs again every chance I get.

I'll probably only play at home with my kids, but I'm eager for SW: Legion to come out as well.
