What happens when you get a die that is damaged?

By sirjorj, in Star Wars: Destiny

I'm an X-Wing player who gave Destiny a try when it came out (I had never played CCGs before) and kind of lost interest when it became impossible to get any more boosters. This Christmas some co-workers started getting into it so with the thought of getting in a game or two over lunch break, I decided to jump back in. I got 2 booster boxes (a SoR and an EaW) to get some newer things and as my nephew and I dove into the boosters, I was hoping for a Thrawn. I actually gasped when I ripped open a pack and the die that fell out had a blue face staring back at me! After we finished opening the packs, I did some organizing and when I did, i notice that the Thrawn die had a chip/crack in it.

I contacted Asmodee and explained what happened and sent a pic (the same one attached above) and replay said they needed a picture of the receipt as well, so they closed it.

I created a new case with the same pic and a screenshot of the amazon receipt and waited. A few days later I got this reply:

Thank you for submitting your request. Due to the nature of your request we are happy to send you a replacement booster pack and will ship you one at no cost to you. We hope this brings balance to the force. Thanks!

I interpret that as they will send me a random $3 booster pack to "balance the force". Am I out of line in thinking that this is a pretty lame replacement for a damaged Legendary die? This card/die is currently going for ~$25 on Ebay. It is just bad luck that the only die I got that was damaged was the one I wanted to most, and truth be told, if it was a Common or maybe even Uncommon die, I really wouldn't care.

If they do just send me a booster pack and it has a Thrawn (which means either they have boosters where they know what the die is or they get really lucky - 1/102 by my count), cool. We're good, and I have a second (damaged) die to run him Elite. If the pack has some other Legendary, I guess that would be okay. But if the die is a Common or Uncommon, should I not feel a little bit cheated? Or am I overreacting and the die is fine to use anyway? Are there any tournament rules restricting use of cracked/chipped dice?

It kinda sucks but if they go round sending out legendary dice to anyone who claims theirs was broken/wrong then they're opening the system up for abuse.

And thats the rub.

If your bb-8 dice was faulty and they sent you a booster which happened to have a Legendary in it you'd probably not be demanding they send a like-for-like bb-8 dice.

Again, i feel your pain - when dice(especially good dice) are faulty and all you get is another booster then its disappointing, but realistically they're replacing your faulty booster for a booster, which is reasonable when viewed more objectively.

Agreed - but let me send in the bad one so they can replace it with a non-broken one. Then they can verify it was defective and I will not be getting a die for free.

If they actually replace my broken high-value die with a low value one, they have guaranteed that I will not spend another dime on this game.

I feel your pain I got a Darth Vader die that was warped (you could spin it like a top). I gave it to a young kid playing the game vs getting a booster for it.

My all time favourite character is Bossk, one of my dice for him has a scratched/marked side. It's the blank, but still bugs me

There was a post from FFG that they'd be looking at a better method in 2018. So at this point, all you can do is hold your breath and wait and see.

Remember the cost of the dice/card you got is the same valve as any other to the manufacturer. The fact that some dice go for silly money is down to us the players being happy to feed the second hand market and nothing to do with the manufacturer. They are replacing a faulty blister pack with another, as what you bought was a blister after all. Yes is a little salty but they are in the right to do it this way.

No - They state that 1 in 6 boosters is legendary. That is a deliberate decrease in supply, which increases its value.

It may cost the same for them to produce it but less supply means more value.

It is possible to have a defective BB8 die, get a new pack and pull a Vader. So yeah, the 1 in 6 legendary is for the entire population of packs, not an individual pack which could be anything. As long as their replacement packs are 1 in 6 legendary, then everything is fine. It just really really sucks to pull a great card with a bad die. Hopefully they will have some kind of dice trade in system in the future, but who knows what FFG will do.

I finally pulled an Ancient Lightsaber but to have one side with a chip missing out of the middle of the lightsaber.....

I will not send it in as it took too many packs to pull it, FFG needs a better system.

You don't have to send it back. You send them a pic if it along with the reciept and they send you a replacement booster.

So to update this, I got a generic booster pack with a generic die. I told them the proper way to handle this was to have me send them the bad die and then they send me a good one. Several days later I got the response that the official policy is to replace damaged cards but not dice.

I will never buy any more Star Wars Destiny products again.

Just seen your attached picture - I cannot imagine that "damage" hampers rolling and/or determining what side is showing.

It's a shame you feel that way as I envy the lunchtime gaming thing you seem to have going.

I still intend to play with what I have. This is a COLLECTIBLE card game - it has neat stuff that you want to collect. If you are lucky enough to grab the legendary that you want and it has a manufacturing defect, they really should own up and replace it. I just don't want to risk purchasing more stuff until they fix their support.

In their tournament rules, they have a section about lost or damaged cards/dice. How do they define 'damaged'? Would this be tournament legal?

On a side not, as I was sorting through my collection the other day, I got to thinking. What if this just used standard D6'es and the cards had a table mapping the numbers to icons. Sure it would be less neat (and less 'collectible'), but it would sure be easier to manager the collection. And booster packs would be cheaper. And problems like this wouldn't happen, as I would guess cards are less likely to be damaged.

How would you track the card back to the correct die? You’d have to roll character, upgrade all one die at a time. Your opponent would need to have die sides memorized to know what is a threat or not. The game’s pace of play would stink.

Good point. That would be a lot of overhead.

The solution is of course to buy singles. Let the seller take all the risk on damage product.

Ha! Today i was playing a couple games over lunch break and noticed that one of my grievous dice (that ive had over a year) has a misprint - instead of the 3 melee for a resource, it has a third 2 melee.

im not even going to bother...
