A message to the Legion Community

By AldousSnow, in Star Wars: Legion

First of all, I'd like to say thank you for the tons of people in here who are contributing in such positive and helpful ways. When you enter this page, you don't click on a button that says "forums" or "message boards". You click a button that says Community. And that's exactly what this kind of game needs. There are other game communities on the FFG website that are downright toxic. So far, the Legion community has been an amazing group of people. Helping, contributing, answering, asking, and having fun.

There has been a rash of irresponsible posts made recently. If anyone comments on threads or posts expressing their concerns, you'll often be met with responses like "welcome to the internet", or "have you never been in a forum?" To be honest, this is more harmful than just remaining silent. It gives validity to the Trolls, ****posters, spammers, and now apparently misogynists and other equally horrible "contributors". These topics do not insite conversation. They are not catalysts for innocent debate. They are posted with negative intent. And I've seen game communities suffer when these members are left unchecked. It becomes the norm. And those who continue to have the "welcome to the internet" mentality become the loudest voice. To be honest, I refuse to let that happen here. Legion is... for lack of better words, "my game". Its Star Wars. It's a wargame. Its a hobby game. It's my perfect storm of elements. And I can see loads of other members here who feel the same way. From some of the best miniature painters, terrain builders, and youtube personalities, to the hundreds of fans who can make this new game something special.

So here's the deal. Next time you see that thread or that comment that crosses the line, and there's been way to many lately, pause before you hit that quote/respond button. Instead, report the user/comment. If necessary, block the user. There is no room for these people here. People who have outright stated that they have no intention of buying/playing the game have no place here. And i'm not talking about everyone who has an issue with the game, or disagrees with a decision FFG has made. To those people, welcome. Share your thoughts. Ask questions. But if you are only here to ****post, spam, troll, or spout hatred, then get out. You're not wanted. This is not a valid way to "get your point across to FFG". The game is already made. If you have such intense feelings, send FFG an articulated, well written email. Because acting like a immature child is not how you get the attention of million dollar corporations. This is common knowledge. And if you were, in fact, unaware that this is not a solid tactic, welcome to the internet.

To the rest of you Legion-eers. Thank you. You are the reason I've been in this hobby since childhood. I can't wait to meet some of you on the battlefield.

Thank you sir

Here here

But...but.... who trolls the trolls?

But seriously though, valid point.

Good post. It is very difficult for me to hold back sometimes especially when people with no interest in the game or community start **** talking the thing you have put time and money into. But you are right. Especially when people start saying hateful things it's best not to honor then with a response.

Well said, I responded recently on one of those threads here and shared my concerns of the discussion. At the same time I would have been interested in a healthy conversation about the topic. I'm fairly new here, so I'm asking, what would be the best way to handle such a situation. You want to ignore the trolls, I agree, should we also ignore the entire thread even if there are some valid points? Maybe start a new one or would that be wasted time, because it's now a "poisoned" topic?

What are your thoughts about that?

And where's my cow?

It currently reads that the trend for some figures in this forum/community is to utilise White Knight. This is a well-known brand that could be useful to base coat sculpts such as stormies and snow troopers. Apparently it is cheap, easy and popular and does not require too much thought. https://www.bunnings.com.au/our-range/brands/w/white-knight

Just ignore it. He is saying that people calling out others for misogyny are being white knights.

Trolling trolls is an art form, sir. I dare not take that away from you lol. But sometimes its worse then that.

Case in point. Someone posting a veiled defense of misogyny. Upon further clicking, one finds that said user has posted less than 15 times. And 50% of those posts are defending misogyny or making misogynist remarks. Hes been called out for trolling on other boards. This isnt trolling, its just disturbing. I simply reported him.

Halfway through the reading I started imagining the speech being delivered in the coruscant senate... It obviously ended with lots of applause!

Wise words.

If a thread gets that toxic, yes, perhaps the thread should die. But healthy conversation is welcome, even if the viewpoint isnt the popular one. Start up a new topic. Be kind. Be thoughtful of how you speak and how others will read your words.

Ha! Thanks, man. Im glad that there's people who can agree and see the issue.

and now apparently misogynists

It's cute that you think misogynists are something new to run into on FFG forums. When I first joined the forums for Armada and X-wing last year (long time player, just never much of a poster until recently), I had to play whack-a-****** all around those forums. X-wing was worse. For those who are just trolling, who have new accounts and clearly are just looking to flame, then whatever; but please, if you ever want to have more women around here than just me (I've yet to see another (obvious) woman around on any of the forums I've been on), do NOT let sexist bs comments go unanswered. It happened a-plenty on X-Wing and Armada until I started speaking up (go back to the TFA and R1 threads to see what I really mean), and standing my ground, then some of the decent guys felt empowered to speak up too. Dudes, police the other dudes, please.

I absolutely LOVE your sentiment though!

I have to disagree friend. Trolling is trolling - painting and sculpting minis IS art however (and that can be quite subjective SIR!) Happy New Year

Welcome to my blocked user list. The proper response is to report them and block them. But nothing suggested will stop this group from becoming toxic. I took that to be your goal. Haters are going to hate. People are full of themselves. We have had people say I am not going to play legion. (Insert motivation here) or complain about scale sculpt, rules, and factions again( insert motivation here). At this point those are the posts that need to be culled. Certainly not my response to them comrade. Just realize in most cases you are feeding the troll monster with your response. Certainly that’s what they wanted a response any response. That’s the job of the moderators and administrators. If asmodee is not going to do that. Then depending upon how egregious it is I’ll choose to respond or not. it is not up to you to suggest I police myself when I am the fan, I am the supporter both fiscally and with my time. I didn’t start the fire. But I can tell the difference between a bonfire and a flaming turd lit on my front porch. If you cannot? And are a fan of the game and / or on the fence about the game. I still want to be know you. If you are not a fan / or interested in the game. Then your post here is nothing but a troll. Asmodee is not going to cull those people. Expect me to respond from time to time. Clearly the appropriate action to prevent toxicity in the “community” is to be taken by asmodee. I believe you and I are on the same side.. Fans of a game, but suggesting to cure the headache by cutting off the head or just enduring the pain is not really a solution.

So mr/ms internet policeman. Post someplace else. Oh I smell bacon.

Whilst I can understand the feeling behind this post, unfortunately it’s a bit redundant.

People either get it, or they don’t. If they don’t, this post is likely to end lame things (as appears to be the case) more than anything.

How do you block people? There a few like darth light and 1 that I really would like to block.

It’s not running, it’s removing their audience.
