Changing the race legs in "Taming the Dragon" to a city setting

By kingpin000, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi there,

I am planning to adapt the racing rules from "Taming the Dragon" for a race through a city/urban area. The adventure module itself is written for the crystal swamps of Corellia. What kind of racing legs would fit in a city?

Well, the easiest method would be to simply reskin the existing stages. Off the top of my head:

  1. The Long Run is fine as-is. Adjust the flavor to fit as needed
  2. Pillars of the Sky could be the supports of a parking facility or industrial complex.
  3. Razor Blades could be any glassy area. Pedestrian crosswalks over a river or street sound like fun
  4. In a Pinch is also fine as-is. Any suitable alley or or architectural phenomenon will serve
  5. The Drop: same as In a Pinch
  6. Reentry: same as The Long Run, In a Pinch, and The Drop

You could certainly find some additional city-themed legs to supplement or swap out the legs from Taming the Dragon, but reskinning allows you to keep the existing mechanics. I'd say that racing through some area similar to the droid factory in Attack of the Clones (pouring molten metal, giant dies stamping up & down, etc.) or through a busy street could be lots of fun.

Maybe a shortcut through a mall?

How would you handle roadblocks or traffic jams?

Suggestion, watch "The Blues Bothers" movie. It does have the shortcut through a mall, plus some really great through city chase scenes. Yes it's a chase movie, but in all honesty that's all a race really is, everybody chasing each other and whomever happens to be leading at that point.

If I had a super-fast bike that can move easily in three dimensions, I'd consider both minor annoyances than anything else. I suppose that each rider could either try to weave through the obstacle (in which case you could treat it like an asteroid field from the CRB or use the mechanics from Pillars of the Sky) or if a rider chooses to go around, they could slip back one place in the racing order or lose a point of speed to represent them deviating from the most direct route.
