A Game of Thrones Greenlit

By Syd, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hey guys, there's no official word from Martin's website, but I thought that I would post and let everyone know that The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the series has been greenlit. Thrones will be on TV. I honestly had my doubts for years that it would get this far...I guess the next challenge is making the seasons amazing so as to ensure we get the whole run televised.

If you go to the Hollywood Reporter's website you will also see the first official photo of the series. It appears to be Will from the prologue riding towards a cluster of frozen solid wildlings in a dense forest...I got chills.

That's really exciting news syd. It seemed to be an awfuly drawn out process - we're tlaking around three years since he first made the annuncement.

it sure didn't feel like it was coming down the pike, for a while there.

This is very xciting though. There really should be a surge of recognition adn interest in Westeros - hopefully we can get a little spill over to boost interest in our game.

THR is also stating that HBO ordered 9 episodes in addition to the pilot which is already made...so ten total episodes. I think that will be plenty of time to show us the first book...but subsequent books (especially A Storm of Swords) will require a bit more I think. Martin even mentioned at one point that Paris was trying to muster support for a two-season split of ASoS. But all that's a long way off.

Also, it shouldn't be assumed that 10 episodes = 10 hours. HBO shows (Sopranos was notorious for it) often will run a little under an hour, or a bit over an hour if the narrative of the episode calls for it. I think Sopranos once had an episode that was a good 80-85 minutes long (but don't quote me).

GREAT NEWS!!! I love it!!! :-)

Westeros bleeds!!!

Great news indeed. Now I hope that the series will not be finished earlier than the books.

For the lazy, you can go see the article here.

Awesome.

And thanks for looking out for the lazy guy, Luke.

I forgot to dittos the awesome myself... I'm that lazy. I just figured after I did the heavy lifting for myself I could save other people the time they had to cut and paste. :) Safely ensconsed in Wayne? Portland looks to be fun; Myers and Binder will totally be my *******.

Ah Syd beat me to post.

GRRM has posted lots of links in his Not a Blog to various news sites that announced it yesterday. Also, he gave us a page # update on Dance: 1311 and counting!

I think the performance of the first season will determine if ASoS gets split... if the show is performs well then they'll order more. And considering that GRRM will need X amount of years to complete the series, having 20 episodes for each ASoS and AFFC/ADWD gives him more time.

Speaking of which AFFC/ADWD would have to be sort of merged a bit since I doubt TV goers will put up with only dealing with some of the characters for a whole year.

HBO ( and other networks) have shown a willingness to split up seasons...so if ASOS is split into a season 3 and a season 3.5, I imagine the same would be done for FFC/ADWD. I agree that to do a season of only Feast would be too jarring for the viewing population...it was pretty jarring for the reading population.

assuming they did a literal translation.

the beauty of doing the tv show is that they can chop out, retime and change timeline a bit (i.e. speed up)

I just want to say yay... gran_risa.gif

And keep in mind guys - we're not guaranteed Clash or Storm as series' yet. Thrones will ahve to do well adn genearte buzz and NOT COST OO MUCH for teh other books to be greenlit. Deadwood was really well received and critically acclaimed - but when the cast started making too much money, the killed it as efficicnetly as Swearingen would have. And Carnivale (which I thought was way too baroque) had something like a six season arc planned - and got axed after two.

Make sure you all re-up your HBO sunbscriptions and pray the series gets good buzz. And keep your fingers crossed.
