Glorious Narrative X-Wing (With An Appropriate Finale!)

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

I have known about Dagobah Dave's Trench Run for about 30 minutes less than I knew about X-Wing. 4 years later, I have finally given it a go!!

We played Team Epic style, with each player bringing a list as specified by the rules, so we essentially had twice as many ships as the scenario calls for. Seemed to work just fine.

My brothers were Rebels. They split into X-Wings (Luke, Wedge, Biggs, and Red Sqd) and Y-Wings (Gold Sqd + aces).

My nephew fielded Vader, 2 Glaive Defenders, and a Gamma Vet with Cruise Missiles and Plasma Torps.

I fielded Anything But Black Squadron:

Juno Eclipse (29)
TIE Advanced (28), TIE/x1 (0), Advanced Targeting Computer (1)

“Youngster” (20)
TIE Fighter (15), Snap Shot (2), Stealth Device (3)

“Howlrunner” (21)
TIE Fighter (18), Stealth Device (3)

Black Squadron Pilot (15) x 2
TIE Fighter (14), Veteran Instincts (1)

Onyx Squadron Escort (25)
TIE Aggressor (19), Twin Laser Turret (6)

We set up across the long edges, on opposite ends; the Imps had to deploy in one corner and the Rebs deployed to drop into the Trench ASAP.

The X-Wing aces dropped into the trench, and the rest of the Rebels raced across to engage the Imperials and destroy power nodes:

The Rebels seemed to be doing well, destroying 2 nodes, but then Biggs was destroyed by Trench cannons. The countdown timer was running out, and it seemed that the X-wings would not make it down the trench in time. Han showed up on R1, and killed an Academy TIE, giving the Rebels 1 more round!!

It was the break the Rebels needed. Luke and Biggs made it to the end of the trench, in R3 of the port. . .if this shot didn't go in, the clock was out:

Luke fires his Protons Torpedoes!! Hot dice give 4 hits!! Green dice do what they do: fail.

Awesome night of XWM. Even though I lost, there is something extremely satisfying in having Luke blow this thing so we could all go home!!

Great recounting of an Epic battle!

Played this about 18 months ago. Similar outcome with a last turn rebel victory. Highly recommended for X-wing players! Beats 100/6 hands down!

I gotta give this a try! Where did you get the DS playmat?

This gent has files available:

http://endspacevr.com/x-wing-game-mats/

I used the 3x6 file and Vistaprint on a 4x6 indoor banner. I had some cropping problems (and lost the exhaust port!!) and Vistaprint won't accept a file as large as the download. So, I used a much smaller downloaded jpeg from this page:

Sadly, that file is too small, so the print gets pixelated. Not terrible, but not slick, either. Maybe @2J-W has some advice?

Here's some bits I wish I had when playing for reference:

This is how it should be played! Bravo!

I've not tried the V3 rules, but almost every game I've run comes down to one last shot that just HAS to work. 3/4 times, the Rebels flub the attack roll! I've not seen many Rebel victories, even though it comes down very close.

I was just looking at printing out a mat. I just found a place in US that will do free shipping and print a vinyl mat for $28.66. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger today as it's an end of year sale. It's 3x6 and don't think there will be any funny issues with the printing.

Who are you thinking of using? Vistaprint was c. $50 (1/2 off, but taxes and shipping).

The V3 rules seemed a little incomplete at the moment, so we sorta blended 2 versions. Seemed to be fine, but I'm not sure that doubling agility for the turbolasers is a good thing anymore since they now require energy to fire. . .this really limits use, so I'm not sure you need to limit effectiveness anymore. The file for the mat was printed with the trench more-or-less in the middle, so it doesn't fit the V3 set up, anyways. I want to read thru the other thread front to back to sorta figure the evolution of the scenario, but right now my brain is melting down from a cold :(
