Legion or IA?

By PanchoX1, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Thinking about getting into one of these games. At the moment, there is no IA community where I'm at so that's not a factor. I currently pretty much only play and love X-wing. Curious to see what the people who play Imperial Assault are thinking about the pros and cons of each one.

thanks!

Imperial assault can be played solo. That to me is a huge factor in buying a game. Legion will be much closer to X-wing in that it’s a skirmish game.

If if you have ever played and enjoyed any of the other FFG games like descent you will like IA. It has the same feel as other co-op campaign games. If you have kids I would definitely suggest IA. My kids get excited to play it and with the app out now it’s much more fun to play with your kids against the app.

I’m an x-wing player too, but I’ve come to enjoy IA more. Mostly because of the campaign element.

I think that might be your key. IA has three was to play: 1 vs 1 Skirmish (there are 4 player maps) 1 vs 1-4 Campaign, and 1-4 player co-op Campaign wit the app. Legion (at least to for the foreseeable future) is just the 1 vs 1 game.

Legion looks a little more like x-wing, though you’ll need to do some painting. It has movement templates and range rulers, and intended as a 1 vs 1 squad builder game. IA can be fun for 1-5 players, and it’s grid based.

I'd check out this thread . Pretty recent, a bit of discussion on this already there.

thanks for all the info and opinions. Leaning towards IA right now. especially if minis are roughly the same size between games. makes it easy to swap some in and out in a casual setting.

Overall, I like the smaller footprint needed to play IA. Like the app option and the solo play option. Like that you can have multiple players.

Still very interested in Legion. Love the terrain and scenery. but don't have a lot of space for it. Love being able to get started in a new game right away. Love and want to participate in the competitive side of both games. may get an IA set this weekend and see how it goes. I sure hope the game will continue to get supported by FFG and legion wont kill it.

First, I would ask what it is you're looking for, in terms of gaming itches that need scratching, compared to what you're getting from X-Wing, currently, and I'll do my best to try and psychically Q&A it for you here with some situations that come to mind;

1) You like to play in X-Wing tournaments

Legion is going to be a ground-floor game which is both really good and really bad for tournament play. On the one hand, you won't have as much information to keep in mind, like the every bloating X-Wing FAQ, so there won't be a lot of errata and other clarifications to sit and research beyond the Rules Reference guide. The other side to that coin is finding other people to play with at that level, which will be tricky, since it's a non-existent community given that the game isn't out yet, and only exists "in theory" based on anticipation and enthusiasm but nobody has actually got the product in front of them.

Imperial Assault has tournaments to be attended, and if you live in the United States, Regional season is just beginning so you could hit up some kind of even hopefully not too much of a drive from home and possibly collect some shiny chrome. The FAQ is mercifully short and concise. While not a huge community in scope as X-Wing is (with regards to Organized Play), it does at least exist, so it has that on Legion; you can start playing now.

Either way, your initial buy-in may be more than you're used to if X-Wing is your first rodeo with regards to miniatures wargaming tournaments.

2) You don't want another "tournament" game

Imperial Assault is your better bet here. At the very least you can buy the Core and give the companion app a go for a nice solitaire adventure of roughly 5 missions. From there, you can gather 1-3 friends and run the app's campaign again, but as a group for the social experience. You could also get 1-4 friends and run the Core Set's campaign, with probably you as the Imperial Player to facilitate the game. Same experience in terms of a small gathering of people to play a game, but one of you is the "bad guy". This only requires a single Core Set to get going, so while it's not inexpensive versus say purchasing a copy of Pandemic, at least there's enough material in there to sustain a group and only require "your" investment.

If it takes off with your group, the app will eventually release more content (nobody knows exactly when, but you can count on it eventually) so you can rock more co-op eventually, allowing you to even purchase more material as the app begins to support more of the boxed expansions. If the group liked the 1vsMany campaign style of play, you could run it again with someone else as the Imperial Player, choose different heroes, etc, or purchase another campaign box to try that out instead. You have options, and again it only requires "you" to make the purchase so it's easier to get people together if they're not having to also keep up with the game.

Legion is where this is going to come down to finding like minded people around you. Because this is designed as a "tournament" game, meaning a 1v1 head to head battle, you may find that in broad strokes you're still playing X-Wing in that sense, and that it doesn't really come out when you have a gaming group together.

Also, the Core for Legion will be more of a "Starter Set" to give you a small taste of the larger skirmishes that the game is intended to be played at. You could supply all the material for you and a friend but it will get old fast. You'll soon want to expand out. If your regular opponent doesn't want to make the investment, you're footing a larger bill to keep the game on the table. However, if your regular opponent does want to get into it on their own dime too, you both can buy a Core and divide up between Rebels and Imperials to at least double your forces and have all the ancillary materials (dice, rulers, templates, rulebooks, etc) to keep on your own.

To summarize, I think IA will be your better bet here as it provides a casual narrative experience that Legion won't be able to compete with in its current state.

3) You have experience with, and wouldn't mind getting back into, another Warmachine/Warhammer 40K kind of miniatures game

Legion is going to be your jam, but with the caveat that technically speaking nobody plays it right now since it's still not released.

4) You enjoy the broad spectrum of Star Wars flavour

Simply, Imperial Assault has a wealth of material out for it, and if you were to spread out all the currently released miniatures and campaigns and tiles, you have a cornucopia of Star Wars sights from your favourite classic characters in Luke/Han/Vader, to the ubiquitous mooks in the form of Stormtrooper variants, to a nice menagerie of different aliens and some creatures.

Legion is currently set up to be the Rebels vs Imperials military campaign that will look a little more narrow on the field in that sense. Sure Luke and Vader will be there, but it's going to be Stormtrooper looking things versus Rebel commandos as they basically looked in the original movies. So there's that. Maybe more will come later to spice up the visual variety, but even if it was announced "today" and it showed as being "At the Printer" on the Upcoming page, you're still looking at 4-6 months before it gets into your hands.

Finally, I'd check out the link that @subtrendy2 posted above to hear more opinions and alarmist reactions from the rest of the forum and draw your own conclusions from there. Come back here with any other questions.

The real question that needs to be answered is:

"How often do you like to read articles on FFG's website about a game you are playing?"

;)

my 2 reasons for not getting into Legion

1. Scale isn't right, should have been 20 or 15mm to get large armies

2. I'm gonna get bored really fast with white stormtroopers game after game

That's why you shouldn't paint them white!
