Targeting Synchronizer Question

By j_man_04, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I just want to make sure I have this right. I've been planning on running a few missile gunboats along with an Upsilon carrying Weapons Engineer, FCS, and TS.

The first part of the TS card reads "When a friendly ship at Range 1-2 is attacking a ship you have locked, the friendly ship treats the " Attack (target lock): header as " Attack:."

Even if the gunboats have a Target Lock, I still treat my missile attack as "Attack :. " However, the gunboat title says "You may perform attacks with [torpedo and missile] secondary weapons against ships you have locked even while you have a weapons disabled token."

Treating the "Attack (target lock): header as "Attack :. " doesn't prevent me from using the missile attacks, as long as the ship with the missile has a Target Lock as the title instructs, correct?

If you don't have the target locked yourself OS1 doesn't work to let you shoot with Weapons Disabled. T.Sync doesn't get around that.

The first part of Targeting Synchronizer is a moot point where the Gunboat OS-1 title is concerned, for the reason stated by @thespaceinvader . You (the Gunboat) must have a lock on the target, regardless of what the attack header is.

The second part of Targeting Synchronizer still works. You could spend the lock from the Targeting Synchronizer ship instead of the Gunboat’s lock.

Right, I understand that. I'm just double-checking that treating TL as just an Attack still lets me use a secondary weapons as long as the ship itself has a TL.

The goal is to always maintin the gunboats' TL and use the shuttle's for rerolls. That way I can reload whenever needed.

Yes that works fine.

Are you thinking the Attack (Target Lock) header requires you to spend a lock? That isn’t true. You only spend a lock if the card text tells you to. (Compare Proton Torpedo to Cruise Missile for an example.)

Changing the Attack header doesn’t change anything for the OS-1 title. The title requires the Gunboat to have a lock on the target, which is functionally the same as having the Attack (Target Lock) header. In fact the title is more strict than the header because it can’t be bypassed by any existing card available to the Empire. (Shara Bey would work, but wrong faction.)

You can use a Target Lock for its normal reroll effect as long as the card didn’t tell you to spend the lock to perform the attack.

This is a good explanation. Thanks. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't off on anything before putting it on the table. I'm likely using Harpoons so I can maintain the TL with the attack and use the shuttle's TLs for rerolls. Next round I can SLAM around if needed and fire again (with EM), and after that reload and keep firing.
