Thweek Shadowed - Adaptability

By tangoraven, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Say Thweek decides to copy the PS of a ship with a PS8 and has the EPT Adaptability equipped. The target ship can change its PS to 7 or 9. So which PS does Thweek copy?

I'm vacillating between the original PS8 or the adjusted PS7/9. The timing window when Thweek has to declare his target also matters if the copied PS is the adjusted PS as the owner of the copied ship can always choose to downgrade the PS just out of spite.

So, how should this be ruled? The following cards are copied for your convenience.

(1) Thweek has to choose his target ship before the Place Forces step (see Thweek's pilot card);

(2) Thweek is treated to have the same pilot skill as the target ship After Setup (Shadowed condition card); and

(3) The FAQ on Adaptability that states the adaptability PS change only kicks in after being placed in the play area during Setup .

Adaptability kicks in during setup.

Shadowed copies your pilot skill after setup.

I'd say you get the modified pilot skill.

You would be correct.

Thweek chooses the ship before anything is placed.

Thweek is placed at his unmodified PS of 4.

The Adaptability ship is placed at its unmodified PS of whatever, then chooses which side of adaptability to use.

Setup ends.

Thweek now copies the modified PS of the Adaptability ship.

By the End of the setup Phase Adaptability will have done its work and that is the value that would be copied. Seems pretty clear and the whole reason when ship's PS is going to be copied is set first is to allow for this possibility.
