Is it possible.

By Kas, in Rogue Trader

Does anyone think it would be possible to play with a party of rogue traders, each one owning his own ship???

It could, but then given that, as the GM, I would then have to throw fleets against them, would prefer not to do it if only to speed up the game so whenever I needed to do space combat or rolls for Navigation for each ship, the game didn't slow to a crawl.

Milliardson is right about fleets, but if you can manage to keep it down to two ships and ascertain that not to much is initial given to "ship points" (so that it is to raiders or a raider and a fregate) it could work out.

It could be to RT sharing funds: one who has the transport and one who has the escort.

Like the others have recommended this would be possible.

But as a GM, I believe it would limit the scope of your adventures. Surely the diversity that can be achieved with a mixed group, where they are all bringing their individual skills to the party would be better than a group of Rogue Traders who all want to further their own dynasties.

That said, have you set it up so that they are all equal partners in the same dynasty?

Or maybe they could use the different classes from a purely character creation point, but in a role-playing term they are still Rouge Traders. For example a Rogue Trader who is particularly focused on furthering his dynasty through the use of cold hard steel may use the Arch Militant class creation tree. This would still provide you with the diverse character skill sets.

Although it could be possible to run such a group, I'd strongly recommend not to do so. A group consisting only of Rouge Traders would be pretty boring. Btw, the ship isn't tied to the RT, but to the group as a whole. Atleast that's how I understand the rules.

If you like to run huge spacebattles in this thrilling universe go and get Battlefleet Gothic by Games Workshop. A group

That is indeed how it works. The ship isn't tied to the RT, therefore meaning that each character on the RT career has a ship, it's attached to the entire group.

Perhaps you could run it along the lines of a "Mauritius Command" (Fantastic Patrick O'Brien Novel) campaign and have a commander RT in charge of a collection of Rogue Trader Vessels (each with their own captains) for a specific mission... Culling the Undred Undred Teef (Destroying the Hulk?) or Retaking the Iniquity system spring to mind...

That's actually my favourite Aubrey/Maturin novel! happy.gif

The first 5 at least are a must read for everyone (and especially so for Rogue Trader players!)

I would hesitate to allow it. Not only, as someone said, you have to worry about enemy fleets you have to worry about too many npcs. That is, the crew of each ship. For me, it's important that the players feel as though their characters are in a vessel - one that has a population, its own culture and history. To that end, I place importance on the crew. To manage each ship, that would be a nightmare.

a fleet of all rogue traders is what my group has, so far it works. And as far as ship points there is nothing in the book saying that they are divided between rogue traders and that each one has there own profit factor and ship. the only reason any one would think other wise is becuase the game was built around 1 rogue trader and 2 or more supporting characters. untill further rules on thr matter ar published it should eithe be the gm's descression or treaded at face value in the character creation section.
