Your first army

By AldousSnow, in Star Wars: Legion

Without all of the details, and possibly without all the "early wave" units spoiled, who out there is theory crafting their first army? Things will change in the coming month with new details and new units, but heres the general idea of my army without crunching specific numbers or cards.

General Veers

3 units of Stormtroopers

1 unit of Snowtroopers

2 units of speeder bikes

1 At-st

With the spoiling of Spec Forces, they may take the place of the At-st, with another squad of snowtroopers or 2 units of spec forces if they are awesome.

My plan is to core set it for a while but I do like the idea of having 2 at rts.

Unless the Imperial Spec-Ops receive death Troopers before this game launches,

Darth Vader,

General Veers,

AT-ST,

As many snow trooper squads (with specialists) as I can legally field -1,

1 stormtrooper squad (with the rocket launcher)

Atm

Vader

Veers

At-St

1snowtroopers

2 stormies

speeders

but first im going to just core it for a bit

As about 75% of my locals are going Imperial mostly to start out, i'll be using Rebels.

I want a bit of everything tbh....definitely a T-47 and an AT-RT for sure. The exact mix depends on what else we haven't seen yet!

I'm so torn.....

My competitive instincts scream rebels will have the advantage for my playstyle, but my modelling instincts want to take this one easy and are somewhat turned off by the immersion break in what i'm calling the "multiple duros effect". the same same poses i can handle, that 1 blue head in each squad i'm not so sure about....

I know where your coming from, I plan to start with the Storm Troopers until I see what third party Rebel heads come out.

Just head swap from some of the bigger IA models. The scale creep has them at basically the same size anyway, nobody will notice much (if any) difference.

that's an expensive set of heads when your paying aus prices

True enough...it seems ALL minis are expensive at Aus prices! I'm fortunate enough to have a bunch of IA stuff i barely use sat around, so i may well end cannibalising some of it.

For Imperials

Veer

2x Stormtroopers

1x SnowTroopers

2x AT-ST

plus upgrades

For Rebels

Luke

3x Rebel Troopers

2x T-47s

plus upgrades

That is what I am thinking.

I'm planning an Rebel Alliance with a lot armored power:

Luke (as long, as there is no cheaper - or better fitting option)

4 Rebel Troopers

3 AT- RT's

1 T47 Airspeeder

There are some Points left, but I think, I'll need at least 2 Lascannons against AT- ST's and Vader and for irgnoring that imperial armor guys running around.

This.

Using the boards as an indicator it appears 99.9% of the gaming population may be all-in on Imperials. Deep down I am too but I want to play more often than not so starting with Rebels. As noted, really hoping for some more alien options and something a little bit cooler than Leia for a commander.

The duros soldiers are neither specialists or sergeants so good news! All of your squads that don't have the x-tra trooper upgrade can leave their blues behind!

EDIT:

My army for now

Vader

2x snowtroopers

Veers

4x stormtroopers

I will choose a rebel army when we see the second rebel commander and corp articles.

Shriv = life

”what’s our cargo?”

”one desperate Duro, and a ridiculous man in a cape”

and also

”if i die, im glad you will too”

I tend to stick to dark side alignments in most of the games, but I may lean towards rebels this time. I just think that the painting will be more enjoyable. But it's just as easy for me to fall into the grasp of darkness when it comes down to it.

I've been crunching numbers but can't figure out the best way to make my army work.

I'm thinking

  • Vader
  • Veers
  • 1x AT-ST
  • 1x Speeder Bikes
  • 2x Stormtrooper
  • 1x Snowtrooper

I like this build, however to justify Vader I think he needs a full Force Loadout. The one I want to run is about 35 points. With all that said and done, I'm only left about 72 points to upgrade any of my troopers, add a weapon to my AT-ST, or give Veers or Bikes any upgrades.

So I'm contemplating ditching the bikes. I think I need some Troopers with Impact Weapons (at least 1 HH-12 Stormtrooper)... I dunno, its tough choices. I'm gonna play with it, but this is my core right now. I might leave the Snowtroopers unupgraded to act as an escort for Vader, then have Veers keep with the 2 Stormtrooper groups while the AT-ST and Speeder Bikes cause havoc.

Ditch the bikes or veers. You don’t need both. You do however, need three corp units amd one commander. Alternatively you could ditch vader for more bikes or ditch vader amd the bikes for another at-st

That's what I'm between. Likely be ditching the speeder bikes, I think two Commanders will be beneficial.

As a rebel player I'm very excited to see so many Imps wanting to run the AT-ST. I think with what we have right now, it costs too much and won't do what you need it to. Vader and the AT-ST fill similar roles and take half your points. Veers and the AT-ST will probably be great, but you're also giving up a lot by having your commander there and not with the rest of your units.

The AT-ST should be a beast once a second cheap commander comes out though. Until then. I'll be happy to see it across the table from me.

with long range comms you won't need Veers neer the AT-ST and with the range of its weapons the AT-ST won't need Veers' aim tokens because it won't need to move much.

It's really interesting, I figured that with the announcement of veers we would see people talking him instead of Vader to get more troopers or atsts but it seems like most people what l want him so that Vader is free to go on a rampage!

That stems from the problem of range. This game wants 2 commanders and Vader and Veers are our only current options. When they drop the third option I'm sure there will be lists that have what you suggest.

1 other reason (at least for me) that Vader hasn't been booted yet is that we don't know the point costs of the AT-ST weapons yet. I desperately want to build a mechanised infantry platoon led by Veers, but I don't know if I can fit one within the 800pts.

Liea or Reikaan is going to be the couterpoint to veers when the announce, as they will have to release at the same time for balance.

And I have a feeling they will be defensive support to Veers offensive support. I am guessing passing out dodges to nearby squads and either some sort of deployable squad shield, or a Y-Wing Ion Bomb strike command card (to counter Veers AT-AT Maximum Firepower)
