Beginner Question - extra dice

By ncasolobp, in X-Wing Rules Questions

There are a number of different scenarios that will grant extra dice. Such as attacking from range 1. There's even a pilot ability in the core set that adds an extra attack dice from attacking at range 1. In theory the core set could have a scenario where the attacker is granted 5 attack dice. If I roll 3 hits do I just remember that I've already got 3 hits and roll 2 more dice? Is getting another set of dice a common practice?

Additionally some of the upgrade cards it isn't clear if they're single use. The way the text is written it implies that you don't use forever (proton torpedoes) but it doesn't necessarily say discard (R2-D2).

Finally there are some expansions that are out of stock on the website (like the TIE Defender and Y-Wing). Are they out of production or just out of stock?

I would recommend getting more dice but I used tracking tokens or the critical damage tokens to represent a hit or crit from my first three dice, then I rolled the other extra dice.

Torpedoes and missiles are discarded after a use (except unguided rockets). R2-D2 is not. It will say on the card to discard that upgrade after use.

Those are some expansion packs that people like but I am not sure if they will be back soon. Nothing has ever gone out of production except the tile kit but that wasn't released yet and it got replaced by mats.

1. Yes, getting extra sets of dice is common practice. I myself have 10 of each dice (2 core sets, 1 dice pack, and a 10th dice I've picked up somehow). If anything it avoids the issue of a player declaring they got X results against the other player who says they saw differently.

2. Do what the card says, don't do what it doesn't say. There are a lot of upgrades that are single use and will say to discard them, just like there are a lot of upgrades that you will never discard (Except under special conditions, like certain damage cards or other game effects, such as Boba Fett crew).

3. Just currently out of stock. FFG is notorious for doing small print runs few & far between, so it can be difficult at times to track down certain expansions if they were released multiple Waves ago.

Alternately, keep an eye out for core sets on sale/clearance at big box stores like Target. While you might not necessarily need three more ships, it can open up your squad building options, and it's ALWAYS nice to get a new set of dice, templates, and all.

And Objective Tokens. Can't get enough of those Objective Tokens.

I think the game was meant to be played where each player brought to the table their own core set... that would then result in a pool of 6x green and 6x red dice (as well as the required independent damage decks)

If that was truly the case, then FFG wouldn't make a dice pack one of their first accessory packs. They do this for nearly every game. You get the bare minimum number of dice, but its an impractical amount in most cases.

Yeah this. Basically everything they make with custom dice comes with enough dice to play but not enough to be convenient and then sell dice packs.

When it comes to "too few" dice you just note what dice results you have and roll (not reroll or roll "extra" dice) the remaining dice you need. All of the results still count as "dice" even if they were just recorded results when it comes to later modification steps. Although it is highly frowned upon (due to possible stalling for example) it would be possible to make all of your "rolls" using just one die.

I guess that is well proven with Worlds Dice.... lol
