EotE New Party: Just 5 Wookiees. Can we just talk normal?

By Wussypillow, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I dunno, title says it all. We haven't played any sessions yet but in the pre-game correspondence, that's the way it's shaping up.

So here's the question: When we're ALL playing Wookiees, can we just talk normal to each other not make throat-damaging roars? Presumably Wookiees don't sound like random growling and roaring to each other: They sound 'normal'.

(Btw, to our credit we're playing a large variety of classes: Scholar, Politico, Marauder, Mechanic, Outlaw Tech. I think we're going to have our background be that we're the 'cargo' from an Imperial slave labor ship that successfully revolted.)

Even if the whole party weren’t, you could. The assumption is that the party understands one another.

Back in the old D6 days, there was a rule that Wookiee PC’s had to growl unless at least one member of the party understood them, at which point it was assumed they were translating for the rest when necessary. Which can still be a fun optional rule.

In the old republic mmo, one of the npcs has a protocol droid strapped to his chest. You might consider something like that just for narrative.

Lowbacca in the Young Jedi Knights books had one on his belt, too.

In the old eu there was a Wilkie that could only speak basic, which was stated to be from a birth defect that prevented him from speaking whatever the Wookiee language is, so theoretically there is no reason why a Wookiee shouldn’t be able to speak basic.

I made the same mistake until Donovan Morningfire corrected me and I looked it up. It was in the original thrawn trilogy and the Wookiee had a speech impediment that humans found easier to understand but he did NOT speak basic.

Ahh, well that has got to be difficult for them as a species then.

The wearkng the protocol droid head on their chest is probably the best thing then

I have a polis massan which has a gank implant which he uses to talk to to a floating droid that relays his speech.

This is great for how you want it to work. You can have most people they meet speak Wookie or have a translator droid. Then to mess with them you can have them run into a group that doesnt speak it or can't translate. Or have a person know the some of the wookie language but misunderstand them and get offended.

Run this mechanic how it fits your story best.

Also in Battlefront 2, an Aqualish named Gleb wears a translator unit around her(?) neck.

Not being able to speak basic is one of the reasons they were categorized as non-sentient species by the senate and thus ended up as slave race for the empire and others. Got to be difficult for them as a species is a real understatement. :)

Now at the other hand this is as well one of reasons why understanding wookie is one of the classic languages together with Huttese … at least for people in the criminal underground. The Huts often will not speak basic because of prestige and the wookies just can't, but getting on good terms with both groups is usually helpful, so people learn those languages.
