Sabine and proton bombs

By Thatdash, in X-Wing

If Sabine is a crew member and your opponent is affected by a proton bomb dealing one face up damage card, does Sabine deal another card or take a shield?

Sabine deals one damage before the bomb is resolved.

latest?cb=20151211213723

So if the target has shields, it would lose one shield from Sabine's effect, and then be dealt a faceup damage card from the Proton Bomb.

Okay thanks

The damage from the bomb happens first then Sabine' s ability kicks in.

Sabine doesn't work too well with proton bombs considering that proton bomb's only strength is that they ignore shields and have a chance to flip a direct hit on 2 hull ships.

If you are going to use Sabine just use seismic charges or thermal detonators since she pretty much doubles the damage. Of like what everyone else is using bomblet generator.

Sabine damage is just damage, so if the defender still has shields, they take the Sabine damage on the shield.

Also, you might see better replies if you post this kind of thing in the rules questions subforum:

Nice to see the sub forum Nazis still working hard during the holidays.

Thank you for actually answering the question! Now it’s time for more eggnog and GUNBOATS!!!

Heh, I usually actually stay away from that particular subforum, I was just trying to be helpful (for example, I've gotten better and more specific painting advice in the Painting and Modification subforum than the regular forum).

But GUNBOAT eggnog does sound really good.

Painting sub forum? Is that a thing again? Why did they get rid of it before anyway?

oh and MERRY GUNBOAT and HAPPY NU YEAR!!!!!!

That’s not really true. Proton bomb’s strength is that it deals a crit, plain and simple. The fact that it’s damage under shields is cool, but praying for a Direct Hit is not the reason you play that card. You play it because it’s potentially catastrophic for your opponent, in a number of ways, from Damaged Cockpit to Blinded Pilot. Sabine synergies perfectly with that IMO.

The damage from Sabine is suffered before the token is removed. That's the only way to measure the Range 1 requirement for her ability.

Yeah you could also be right but again that is leaving too much up to chance that the crit will have a lasting effect on a ship such as a B-wing. It isn't exactly like you can Kylo Ren the crit onto what ever the proton bomb hits. Proton Bombs are like torpodeos, it has the potential to be so broken it just need that little oomph much like dead eye then it will just dominate the meta as they become insta-death for all 2 hull ships (A-wings, E-wings, TAPs, Scyks, Z-95s). Right now they are just too much for too random and if you have been taking a look at what plagues the meta, it is the removal of random occurrences such as bombs not allowing for green dice to roll.

With 7 Direct Hits and 2 each of Damaged Cockpit, Major Explosion, Blinded Pilot and Console Fire, your odds are almost 50% of pulling one of them. With Sabine in the mix you're looking at 2-4 immediate damage on one ship. CF has the potential to add another the following round. Not bad odds.

Console Fire and Major Explosion (or Minor Explosion for those using the old deck) only do damage against the shields. For that you might as well just use Plasma Torpedoes. Damaged Cockpit is Permanent but for that you might as well use IWSYTDS.

There is your issue, sure they are all great crits to flip on a ship especially one with 3 or more shield tokens but you don't have a way of pulling the cards you want at the situation. You could end up with a Direct Hit on Captain Nym, or a Damaged Cockpit on a Bynaree Pirate. You are depending too much on RNG and the meta is rather anti-random now.

Again go with cheaper options that put out more predictable damage or effects. Random fun has been power creeped out of the meta.

Speaking of rules/grammar nazis, I'll add that it isn't a crit that Proton Bombs is dealing, it's a face-up damage card. These are different things.

A face up damage card... in your face!

This is why Advanced Homer Blount comes with an Ace-no-go range 2 zone. Corran or a B-wing could pop even with full shields and Fel could go just as quick even with Focus/Focus/Evade/Palp/Thrusters/SD.

too bad no one plays any of that stuff.

Proton Bombs do unavoidable damage and directly to the hull. I've whiffed Plasma Torpedo rolls and ISYTDS only works if you're running Kylo. Granted, there are cheaper options but I'll take a hull hit vs a shield. As for the specific crits like Major Explosion, Direct Hit and Console Fire, Spock said it best: "Sauce for the goose".
