Narrative League (first draft)

By Zetan, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I'm running a league/campaign for my local group sometime next year, and figured (a) some of the people here might want to copy the rules for their own purposes and (b) people here could help me if any of the rules are unclear. Please let me know if you have any questions about how it all works! Here's the rules: https://diu7u4f1bbc3e.cloudfront.net/ui/000228.pdf

Also, I designed a spreadsheet to track unique upgrades: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ToTHtXVL6_7xYNfuYegnQe8bgv_nTP4sV1Oj0VFERLE/edit?usp=sharing

To use the spreadsheet, you will need to make a copy of it; you can't use it without edit rights, and I'm not giving edit rights out for obvious reasons. Once you have your own copy, select a faction and click the big blue button; it will generate a random, unclaimed upgrade that either belongs to that faction or is neutral. If you type a player's name into the top box, that player will automatically be given that upgrade, and that upgrade will no longer be chosen in the future.

I intend to use the terrain card templates I posted here for this league:

Tweaked some wording on the rules, edited the URL to point to the new version.

Looks like a cool format! Trying to understand how the upgrades work? How do you initially get them if everyone starts out with none? Is there a cap you get per round, are they rewarded out for victory/defeat? Also, when picking up an upgrade, does the token represent ALL upgrade cards or you just pick up one? All seems very strong. For cross faction do you earn an upgrade of the same slot for equal/lesser points? Is this meant as a progression style system or just extra tools you pick up as you go?

Definitely an interesting format you came up with, especially keeping it pretty much all in-game products wise

Thanks for the feedback! I'll try to clarify it in the rules as best I can, but here's the answers. It's worth noting, in case this wasn't clear, that non-unique upgrades (those without the line under the name) are still useable by anyone at any time.

It's down in the End of Game section on the last page; basically, the loser of the game receives one at random.

It represents all unique upgrades if they have more than one.

If you steal a cross-faction unique upgrade, you now possess that upgrade. It doesn't do anything for you, but nobody else can use it, either. So, if as a non-Daqan player, I knock out Kari and pick her up, I have her imprisoned somewhere. Daqan players can try to steal her back with the "Daring Rescue" special objective, but she doesn't do me any good.

It serves two purposes. First, it makes the campaign more narrative; unique characters and artifacts are actually unique. You'll never have Kari fighting Kari or two heroes each holding the Shield of Margath. This makes these things a little more special. Second, it gives a boost to people who win fewer games, serving as a catch-up mechanic; people who consistently win can only get access to unique upgrades by stealing them, while people who lose a few times are getting handed them for free.

Any other questions?

ok Got it, yeah I would just pronounce that part a little more or discuss it in the unique upgrades area as well. I originally thought that end game reference was saying any unclaimed upgrades on the BATTLEFIELD the defender picked one at random, which didn’t really make sense, especially since they’re the ones fleeing the battlefield.

Haven’t really played with the spreadsheet yet, but how do you feel about drawing two random uniques and picking one? That might make it a little too strong, but just one random seems to have a very high potential for non-synergy.

But maybe that balances out with the special objectives and really encourages their use, so maybe never mind.
