When a bomb hits multiple enemy ships...

By Ghost1087, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello all. I was playing a match with a friend and I laid out proton bombs, and one token detonated hitting two of his ships. Was I correct to choose the order in which I wanted his two ships to be dealt the face-up damage cards?

His ships were a Z-95 and a Firespray, the Firespray being physically closest to the proton bomb token. I decided I wanted the Z-95 to be dealt his face-up damage card first, and then the Firespray, hoping the first face-up card would be a 2-damage crit and ultimately destroy the full-health Z-95. The first face-up damage card went to the Z-95 as I had declared, but wasn't a 2-damage crit. Ironically though, the second face-up damage card was a 2-damage crit, and it went to the Firespray. Just bad irony for me in that case. Anyway, I've looked over the FAQ and searched the forums, but I can't find a concrete answer to whether there is a proper order for dealing damage to multiple ships suffering one AoE bomb. I guess what I went with was the same ruling for mines, which, when mines are laid on top of multiple ships, the person dropping one chooses who suffers it, but with the proton bomb, I was choosing the order those ships suffered a face-up damage. My buddy and I didn't really debate over this, but I would rather have a solid solution for the future. Also, one can argue that the order does matter even when dealing face-down damage cards with seismic charges or thermal detonators, etc., because if some effect (Rexlor Brath or Saboteur) flipped a damage card face-up on a ship, that critical damage effect could have rightfully belonged to a different ship, and in place of it could have been a less-severe critical damage effect...But honestly, in that deep of a situation, I wouldn't even consider this chain of events, and wouldn't even care lol.

The person whose bomb it is chooses the order. Impotant in particular with Cad Bane.

or Sabine

Not so with Sabine. Her damage is when the token is removed, technically either before or after the damage, I forget which and I'm not in a position to look it up.

Sabine triggers before the first friendly bomb token is removed each round. There is no “may” in her ability, so you have to resolve it, but if the bomb affects more than one enemy ship you still get to choose which one suffers the extra damage.

Cad Bane triggers when an enemy ship rolls attack dice to resolve a friendly bomb. His ability states, “you may,” which gives you the option of not triggering it on the first friendly bomb that detonates.

I had Sabine and chipped away a shield on the Firespray before the bombs went off, just wasn't sure about being able to choose which of my opponent's ships suffered the face-up damage card first.

You should be able to choose the order.

I'll also remind you that it really doesn't matter with your Proton Bomb as your odds of getting the desired 1-2 really aren't affected by order. You know you'll be dealing 2 cards and which ship gets which really doesn't matter because there's likely nothing you can do to change the odds after you've started. Knowing what the first card is gives you a slightly better guess at what the second card will be but there isn't much you can do about it.

Although there is no indication this was attempted you will need to assign a ship to take the card before dealing the card face-up. I guess if your Proton Bomb was going to hit THREE or more ships knowing what card that first ship gets may change the order you deal the last two cards but the benefits are minor.

I did declare which ship suffered a face-up damage first, then second.

It was only a gamble, and a hope that the Z-95's face-up damage card turned out to be one of the seven Direct Hit! cards in the deck. Would've been great, but didn't happen. However, one did happen to flip up on the other ship. In that moment, all I said was "awww man, so close" and moved on. I don't have a care in the world to count damage cards in a hobby game I play for fun. I only care about dealing enough damage cards to my enemy before they deal enough to me.
