Fenn/Genesis Red/Thweek -Any hope of success?

By MUrunner20, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Edited based on some good guidance @Calibri Garamond

Hello all, I hope everyone has a safe and Merry Christmas. I'm curious if this list has any hope of lasting. I mostly play casual but very open to comments/recommendations:

Fenn Rau (PS 9, 28pts)

  • PTL (3pts)
  • Concord Dawn Protectorate (1pt)
  • Autothrusters (2pts)

Genesis Red (PS7 + 2, 19pts)

  • VI (1pt)
  • "Heavy Scyk" Interceptor (Cannon) (2pts)
  • Pulse Ray Shields (2pts)
  • Heavy Laser Cannon (7pts)

Thweek (PS4, 28pts)

  • StarViper Mk. 2 (-3pts)
  • Virago (1pt)
  • FCS (2pts)
  • Autothrusters (2pts)
  • Glitterstim (2pts)

TOTAL SQUAD PTS = 97

My rational behind the squad is to try and keep my opponent from pinning down one of my fighters. I've had a lot of success with Fenn with PTL and love how he flies. I'm hoping to get some mileage out of Genesis Red by moving her at PS9 to take advantage of her ability. Then Thweek is there to do Thweek things. Thought, comments, change recommendations?

Yeah, I can see that working.

I think Thweek is pretty awesome and I agree on the upgrades for him. But 95 % of the time you will (should) opt for PS on Thweek, so seeing as he will always tie with you opponents highest PS, he deserves a 3 pt bid imo.

Your list is very similar to one I took to a tournament win recently:

Talonbane Cobra (28)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Cruise Missiles (3)
Cloaking Device (2)
Stygium Particle Accelerator (2)
Guidance Chips (0)
Vectored Thrusters (2)
Vaksai (0)

Fenn Rau (28)
Push the Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Concord Dawn Protector (1)

Thweek (28)
Fire-Control System (2)
Autothrusters (2)
StarViper Mk. II (-3)
Virago (1)

Total: 97

The reasoning behind my list is that it has tools to deal with pretty much everything in the meta ATM. A 3 pt bid and 2 ps 11 will take down imperial ps 11 Alpha rather easily. 2X Autothrusters and high PS handles turrets well enough (Nym/miranda/dash primarilly). They can all (well Fenn and Thweek at least) outfly the jousting lists (Tripple Scurrg/FSR-variants and so on). And the list also hits like a truck. The reposition cloaking device provides makes setting up 5 dice cruise pretty straight forward, and if you overshoot, well he will roll 5 anyway.

Win condition is basically kill anything above ps 9 and let Fenn and Thweek clean up.

I like your build very much. I've toyed with a very similar build but have yet to fly it. Congrats on winning a tournament. How did you fly your squad... Dispersed I assume to avoid harpoons and splash damage?

Do you think there is merit to dropping the Plasma Torps and giving Thweek either Glitterstim or Cloaking Device? That would put my build at 97pts with a nice 3pt bid and enable him to be even more squirrely

Thank you :)

Oh, I did nothing crazy in terms of tactis. I would usually deploy fairly spread out and try to get Fenn and Thweek into flanking positions from one direction each (well that was the goal). My opponents would usually go after TBC first, who would usually start in one corner togheter with fenn and bank inwards. TBC hits really hard and is the easiest to take out. Vs. scary stuff, like tripple Harppon scgurrgs I baited with TBC and used decloaking to keep him just out of combat, while taking unconstested shots with the others. This only works for so long ofc., and it probably means no Cruise - but it should set up a 2v2 endgame which fenn and thweek can close easily. Vs. less scary stuff, like palp aces, I would use the decloak to set up a good firing lane and just step on it, bringing the others in the same turn. Vs. big turrets I deployed in a tight cluster and just chased them down, no need to get fancy :)

Yes, I would drop plasmas from Fenn. Assuming you're keeping focus for defense (you probably are), plasmas will only net you about 1 extra expected damage vs. shieded targets at r3 compared to using your primary weapon and spending the TL on rerolls. If at r2, you're better of boosting into r1 and focusing anyway.

About what to do with the points. It's really down to your playstyle I guess. The banky barrel roll and boost actions gives the SW pretty great repositioning, even with just the one action. So I would personally go for Stims on Thweek.

Good luck!

@Calibri Garamond, sounds like a real solid plan. Thank you. Did you ever feel the 3 pt bit was too much and you wanted to upgrade your missiles?

Not really - but that might just be me enjoying the cruise-play much more than harpoons. I did come up vs. a PS 11 QD with a 2 pt bid so the 3 pt bid felt well worth it.

@Calibri Garamond, got two games in over the weekend (one each using both or our lists) and went 2-0. You were right, baiting with TBC/Genesis Red is an excellent tactic and then cleaned up with Fenn and Thweek. I did modify your list a bit due to my opponent... I swapped out VI for Fearlessness and Cruise for Harpoons based on my opponent and it worked like a dream. I don't think I will use Fearlessness often but I 6 hit an Xwing (3x Crits and 3 Hits) after forcing his to burn his Focus with Fenn's engagement. Red worked out better than I hoped, PRS shields were clutch and that one straight was money. I may stick with your build but both were equally fun to play especially with Red's regen ability. Thanks for the advice and vote of confidence.

If you dropped Glitterstim you could get Guri instead of Thweek. I think I'd prefer that, but to each their own.

I've run almost this exact build. It's a lot of fun to fly. My only problem it's that it folds to PS 10+ There will hang in, but Fenn and Genesis really don't like being out PS'ed

I thought about, Guri is fun to fly and can take an EPT but Thweek can Shadow/Mimic accordingly to CYA. Against swarms both skills are useless but there are some low PS ships (i.e. Jess) that Thweek can use well. Appreciate the advice.

Agreed, that is definitely a concern. I mostly fly casual and there really isn't a PS race going with our small group. In most cases I would leave VI on TBC but I really wanted to take advance of of his Range 1effect and it paid off. With Red, yeah it would be an uphill battle but at least Fenn with PTL can use Boost and BR to get out of arc or clog up a potential path and bump higher PS ships. I'm also not so close minded to not try VI on Fenn. Appreciate the advice.
