Episode IX -- where to from here? [Warning: TLJ Spoilers]

By Hawkstrike, in X-Wing Off-Topic

So ... like it or not, we have The Last Jedi . Where to from here for Episode IX?

I have this sense that the series has written itself into a box at this point that it will be hard to get out of (or ... gasp ... requires more than one movie).

[Spoilers follow ...]

So the state of the universe appears to be:

(1) There are about 20 people left in the Resistance, all loaded on the Millennium Falcon. Fleet, fighters, transports ... gone.

(2) The Republic's capital is dead, and their entire military is destroyed.

(3) The First Order is taking over, though we don't actually see it, and it doesn't seem like they have that much with which to take over the galaxy.

(4) The Resistance's allies have not come to their aid.

(5) We have one untrained Force User against a trained-but-unstable Kylo (and presumably the Knights of Ren).

Goal: Rebuild the Resistance/Republic, beat back the First Order, restore peace and justice to the Old New Republic (tm).

How do you do it?

You remember how Jaina finally killed Jacen? I think it’ll end like that. Nice 45-degree chop.

I'm not really sure, because I'm sure Disney will do something we don't see coming and I'll like it better than all the theories.

I refuse to make a reasonable suggestion, and instead I will now suggest how they could use one of the worst storylines the EU had to offer. As just an interesting thought experiment, I've wondered if the storyline from Legacy could be coopted:

In the time between movies, the Resistance has been destroyed. Leia has been killed and in the starting scene, Poe is captured, with Rey, Finn, Chewie, Rose, and the droids running away on the Falcon. In despair, Rey gives up on the Force and closes herself off from it, despite the constant nagging of Luke's ghost. Kylo, meanwhile, talks to various Sith Holocrons, but the ancient Sith masters reject him and call him a fake. The heroes unwittingly become involved in a battle between an Imperial splinter faction and the First Order. By fighting the First Order, they become friends with what's left of the Empire and are invited back to the Imperial bastion world. They realize that what's left of the Empire could become a reasonable government without any Sith or Knights of Ren to control it. Conflicted, Rey runs away in the night, fleeing to a hidden planet. There, she is confronted by a Force user from long before, who teaches her the way of the Jedi. Since the original version of this character (K'Kruhk) is no longer canon, this character could be instead be Ahsoka, revealed to have survived her fight with Vader. Rey arrives upon Cade Skywalker's mantra, "nobody dies for me. Never again." She decides to return to Coruscant and rescue Poe. Eventually, she is captured by Kylo and the Knights of Ren, who slowly convert her to the Dark Side (or so we think). It appears that a romance is blossoming between Rey and Kylo (who is both Darth Talon and Darth Krayt in this version). Meanwhile, Finn, Rose, and Chewie decide to help Rey, and a number of adventures occur as they try to slip past the First Order's defenses to get to Coruscant. Finally, in a massive confrontation, Kylo brings Poe to the throne room and decides to kill him. Rey cannot prevent Poe's death, but Poe with his dying breath forgives her and says that it's more important for her to live, as she is the legacy of the Jedi. An enormous lightsaber battle ensues, where many Knights of Ren are killed. Finally, Rey kills Kylo (probably less gleefully than Cade killed Talon, maybe even with a tear) and jumps out the window, where her friends are waiting in the Falcon. At the end, we are left with the hope that in the abscence of the Knights of Ren, the remnants of the Empire will join the remnants of the Republic and form a reasonable government, with the Jedi holding a place of prominence.

I actually honestly hate this idea, which is why it's fun to hypothesize about. :P

I think they will likely need to deal with Leia dying so there might very well be a few year time skip between TFA and IX to explain that and give the Resistance time to build back up. Of course this also means that the FO has time to establish itself as an new Galactic Empire with a small Rebellion fighting against them...hmm almost if they really wanted to reset this back to ANH. Anyways~ they might try to solve the FO threat in a single film or with the Rian Johnson trilogy they might try to set it up that the ST is the rise of the FO while the next trilogy is all about the fall of the FO just how the PT was the rise of the Empire and the OT is the fall of the Empire.

Hope it ends in the next and the other trilogy is another stuff. And I'd like that the next one starts right where TLj one ends

My five cents, no expectation...

Galaxy in chaos as the FO collapses under its own weight and Kylo's incompetence. There is no resistance as there is no unified enemy, only local feifdoms.

Kylo is a broken figure. He's betrayed all his dreams and his inner psyche has gone loco.

Rey is the one to pull him back from his edge. They have to have a few saber fights first though. Sanity restored, they kiss and make babies. They are crowned King and Queen of a new galactic monarchy. The universe realises that all it ever wanted was Royal gossip and photos. Eternal peace ensues...

The film ends with a sinister figure in the shadows....

Well seeing as ep 7 had the not-death star and episode 8 had the AT-ATs...

My money is on "one or more Hutt characters".

Gen. Hux finally stops being a complete tool... yeah like that will ever happen.

Force ghost Luke spends most of the movie trolling Kylo.

Captain Phasma returns... AGAIN!

... and this time she gets eaten by ewoks.

On a more serious note, I do hope we find out what happened to Lando.

My fave idea would be for him to have gone into the mercenary buisness (not as a merc himself , but as the guy who runs the organisation)
and when the resistance is about to get pwned by the new order he shows up with a small fleet of badass mercenaries (in mandalorian armor if possible) and saves the day!*

* Rememeber, the new characters have ungodly levels of plot armor so that will work.

double post.

Oh ok I could make it about Poe.

I have him down for destroying at least one Star Destroyer (or larger) class vessel

Aparently Lando was considered to come back in 8 in DJ's role only for them to decide that it didn't make too much sense for Lando to betray the Resistance after his history with the Rebellion.

No wonder I was getting "evil-Lando" vibes from that guy.

Han Solo: A Star Wars Story

Then back to other Origial Trilogy era spin off films like Rogue On e, hopefully.

I think the release schedule at this point is:

Han Solo: A Star Wars Story

Star Wars Episode 9

Obi-Wan: A Star Wars Story

Rian Johnson's first film in his trilogy (?)

Heard how they've already written that film off? Apparently that acting coach didn't help much and Howard reshot more than they planned.

Yeah, hype is not on that film's side. The dirtsheets I saw were saying almost 80% of the film had been reshot.

That said, Rogue One underwent a lot of reshoots, and it remains the best Star Wars film of the Disney era.

Speak of the Han Solo movie... How are they gonna put R2-D2 into that one?

So far R2 has been in every star wars movie. This might be the first one without it.

He randomly showed up in the background in an episode of Rebels, so they could do the same for this movie! Maybe they'll even have Bail Organa show up with R2 for a brief sideplot.

Background?

He and 3PO were mission objectives in an episode :D

Right you are. I tend to binge a whole season as soon as it comes out to DVD, so I think of a single episode as a sideplot, because it's not adding to the theme of the whole season.

I'm not sure they'd have as big of a cameo in the Han Solo movie, but I could see something similar. Or if Han is in kind of a bad-guy anti-hero role, maybe they try to steal from Bail Organa but the whole sequence ends with R2 zapping Han and him waking up in jail or something. I think that would be funny.

Hold on a minute... I just sensed a great disturbance in the Force...

Han Solo film... Obi Wan film...

...what if all of this is leading up to a remake of the Original Trilogy?

Not a rip off like the sequels, but an actual remake?

God no, I have my stumach full of exploding death stars...

... not to mention it would be utter blasphemy.

I know... But what have we seen the last few years from Hollywood? Remake after reboot after remake.

Chewbacca and Vader are Chewbacca and Vader; anyone of the right size can play them. The same goes for C3-P0 and R2. Now we have new actors cast for Han and Lando, and Obi Wan is coming back...

...so what if we get a young actor cast as Luke in the Obi Wan film? Then Rian Johnson announces that his trilogy is going to be the original trilogy...

...I feel physically sick. I think I need a lie down. ?

Gosh, that's an awful thought....

I wouldn't worry about it that much though. Given how much Disney obviously hates the prequels, if the new trilogy is a remake, it'll probably be of the prequels. I'm personally hoping that the new trilogy is Episodes X-XII, because I feel like it's taken me two movies just to really get to know the new characters, given how many different things they tried to cram into Episodes VII and VIII.

Hmmm Not sure you can do Vader without James Earl Jones.* And they even screwed up Chewbacca: In ep 8 Han is all grey and chewy looks no time has passed. (I didn't want a grey wookie, but they could have givven him a grey streak or some new item to hang on his bandolier or something.)

He'll be a dead rian johnson if he tries that...

Young Luke, LOL I can see it already. Lil' Luke and Biggs playing in the sand and suddenly Luke asks: "Uncle Owen, who's that strange man that keeps looking at us?"

Great. Now I wanna have Morgan Freeman as a sith lord.
