Simplified rules for beginners

By Virablatira, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hi

I wondering if someone have any suggestions of how to play Star Wars - Destiny with more simplified rules for beginners?

I'm considering buying the 2 player set to play with my son. But my son is quite young and when I have watched some introduction videos for the game, the rules seems a bit difficult for him.

However when I started to play X-Wing Miniature with my son it was easy to remove a rules like action phase, shooting distance, upgrades, etc to just learn the basic of the game. And today, after several "battles" we are playing with more advanced rules.

Is it possible to do something similar with SW - Destiny?

Many thanks for any help or suggestions.

Puh. Tough one.

As a first idea: remove all events and play with upgrades and support only and reduce hand size to 3.

Yes, that way its way more of a "just dice game"... but guess what? Children love dice.

Play with the same battlefield for both decks. An easy one, preferably, like obi wans hut.

You would need 2 two player games, but i recommend that anyway.

The above sounds good.

i would forget the game text on cards except specials.

just pay for and play upgrades and maybe supports and roll the dice!

I like those suggestions too. My advice is that you’re building the deck, so the control is in your hands to build using the simplest cards you have. That will make a big difference as far as how complex the game gets. Some cards are easy and obvious, some cards are inherently difficult. And so that is just a judgment call as to what your son will and won’t understand.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

To MaxPower: If I understand correct you suggest that I need 2 copies of a 2 player game. But why?

Will allow you to play characters elite which adds to gameplay, plus build 30 card decks and following inline with previous suggestions access to more upgrades

Play with 20 card decks. Slowly enter very easy events. Keep the two decks very similar so that your son can get some ideas from your play style.

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions. As I will just play with my son in a quite friendly way, elite characters is not that necessary. Even though my son would probably want it when he finds out what it means :-)

I mainly need a set up of two decks with easy to understand cards. The 20 card sound like a easy start. Instead of buying the 2 player game it would perhaps be a better idea to buy 2 copies of a 1 player starter deck to get similar cards?

Is it possible to play against each other with two "light side" characters? Or is the game build on that one is light and the other dark side?

Entirely ok playing light v light or dark v dark.

Why not see what he can come up with?

It may be as simple as taking 5 Characters each and rolling your dice to try and end up on the other players cards, if they do then that Character is defeated and sits out the rest of the game. This way there is a bit of ownership in the rules and he'll have a more engaging play, you may have to help it is a fair game and steer a little.

How old is 'very young'? Are we talking reading age or younger? And how much experience does he have playing other games?

I've got a friend who's seven year old plays, and is okay with the full rules. But I think he's very advanced in playing games for his age. Playing with him, I've found that he learns very quickly (sometimes by rote), so we don't have to make things too easy for him.

If he's of reading age and can understand the cards, I'd recommend just removing any of the more complex ones. Simple events are probably fine, things like 'Gain shields' or 'remove dice'. Other than that, at it's heart Destiny is mechanically a pretty simple game most of the time (and when it's not, it's mainly due to specific interactions).

Thanks again for you help.

To Amanal: Yes that sounds like a very simple start.

To Abyss: My son is 9½, but English is not our native language. He has just begun learning English in school (3rd grade) so unfortunately its quite far from understanding the text on the cards :-). But even so he can learn and remember the effect of certain cards in X-wing by looking at the illustrations on the cards. So I think I could include some additional cards to the characters.

Thanks a lot again for all your suggestions.

For errata, I printout the errata on sticky labels and put them in the face side of the card sleeves (so you can’t differentiate them when they are in the draw pile, of course). You could do the same thing with translations of the card text (unless you are using this as an opportunity to practice English).

Hi Gberezowsky!

Thanks for the suggestion. That's was a very good idea!
