Runewars Vassal Needs

By tgall, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Hi All!

So as I'm working on the vassal mod for Runewars there are a couple of things that'd be really handy.

1) Maps! Right now I just have a very plane green field. Meh.

Would anyone like to create some maps? The image needs to be 4320 x 3240 in size.

2) Request for Comment: Vassal and displaying armies

Vassal displays the game in 2D. As such for the Runewars mod, I kinda have to decide how to display the units in their trays. One could do a view from above a figure. For Armada this works well because, well ships look like ships from that vantage point. For Runewars tho, I'm not so sure that's the right choice. I wonder if a picture of say the face of a character or unit type might be be better in that it would result it something more identifiable. OTOH it's not exactly recreating the experience of standing over a table as you play.

Thoughts?

As some status for the effort I've put in thus far, I've scanned a crap ton of stuff, I have tokens (excluding casting of the Runes) done, and the morale deck working. Dice are next.

I vote for top-down. It recreated the experience more. However, it can get tricky to identify which figure upgrades are equipped, and in which trays. I know some games have a zoom function when the cursor is held over a piece. Do you think we could instead have the pop-up window display a front view of the figure that the cursor hovers over?

Along this line of thinking, will the individual figures be pieces, or will each tray be a piece with different states to represent losing figures?

Just throwing this out there in case anyone has the knowledge: Someone made an interchange format to go from JSON to Vassal. If you can somehow make Vassal accept JSON files for lists, I can make Tabletop Admiral have an export function similar to the one you see on my Imperial Assault list builder.

I don't really know how any of that works though, but I figured I'd throw it out there in case someone does.

I would look at how Imperial Assault does units. If you do a portrait view similar to theirs you could stack 4 circles, 2 ellipses or a square into a square tray.

This makes sense.

Vassal under it all is just Java and it certainly could be added to pull in from a list builder. The challenge isn't so much pulling the list data in, it'll be mapping it to cards and then getting their graphics representation etc out onto the table. That'll be the work. It's a good goal to reach for in time.
