Magic Variant for Cyberpunk.

By RicoD, in Genesys

Hello everyone!

I'm currently lowkey working on a cyberpunk setting that will mostly be future of the 80s inspired (since I'm currently reading Neuromancer for the first time).

It's going to be all an all-human setting so for the time being I'm going with the four provided archetypes.

However I wanted to make use of the magic system since it's one of the more interesting additions compared to Edge of the Empire.

Of course Cyberpunk doesn't really scream magic so I tweaked the stuff a bit. Flavor-wise It's more control over the supernatural and psychic abilities than magic.

I scrapped the three magic skills and implemented two "new" ones: Psyker[Intellect] and Esper[Willpower]

Since the setting won't have any fantastical creatures or spectral entities I also scrapped the Conjure magic type and created the Transmute magic type.

This is very much a first draft, but I ramped up the difficulty for the bonus effects since I do realize that as of right now it might be prone to some unwholesome exploitation.

Tell me what you think if you have the time!

Sounds like you want something like shadowrun setting, check that out for ideas there are others on the forum that are converting the system over to genesys mechanics, you might want to check it out for ideas for the magic system to GENESYS

Hmm, Shadowrun's magic is pretty much like standard fantasy magic iirc. Inlcuding conjuring (admittedly only elementals and spirits).

Cyberpunk is not my favorite genre, but wouldn't powers essentially be psionics from System Shock or plasmids from BioShock?

I'm working on a similar project, Android: Genesys :D and of course all my work will be moot once FFG gives us a sourcebook. Instead of scrapping the magic types and rewriting everything, I've decided to re-skin them and only delete whatever turns out to be nonsense.

The Android universe has clones with psychic powers, so my characters can take Divine Psionics (will) -- and we'll say it's accomplished by gene modification. I'm also not wild about the hacking rules as written, so I'm going to re-brand Arcana (int) as Hacking. This is admittedly more of a stretch but I'm going for a Watch Dogs feel. Attacking with Arcana Hacking will be the same mechanically but it will rely on nearby electronic items. Conjure will have to be something like "Control" ... also relying on nearby electronic items. Mechanically, it makes no difference whether we say a mage conjures something or a player adds something to the scene as her character "takes control" of it.

It's uncanny how clearly the rules can still be used if you Find and Replace a few words:

Magic -> ESC (Extrasensory Cognition)
Spell -> ESC
Divine -> Psionics
Arcana -> Hacking

I haven't figured out what to do with Primal (cun). I might just toss it.

In other news, I am also reading Neuromancer for the first time! It's really good. Highly recommended.
