At least he is finding wifi whilst in Pyeongchang

One one side of the bracket, High scoring Eurpoean Imperials.

On the other side, "Just Win" North American Rebels.

One of each of the "popular" commanders remain - Sloane and Dodonna.

The remaining two were the only ones to take that commander - Vader and Raddus.

Not this year, but next year, I think for the Top 4 we'll have a TOP 4 POD instead of elimination. That might be even more fun.

I am entirely in favor of constant Swiss instead of elimination.

Elimination works well in games and sports that require constant engagement and action. You can't just stop hitting back in Tennis.

Armada requires scoring on a wide spectrum to win. Elimination requires players get a minimum - literally, a single point - to win entirely.

One If the things that had slimmed down the meta is the need to play an entirely different game format to win large tournaments. This means that fleets that excel in both formats rise, while fleets that excel in Swiss only hit the top X slots and then fail.

Vader, doing really well this year too... when you see all these new Vader fleets, remember who shot first ;)

Personally I prefer elimination games. I like the challenge of a whole new way to play.

That's why you have to make it through swiss first....

Cactus beats @Villakarvarousku for a 6-5 in Fleet Patrol. Full details (no log, sadly) in the fleet patrol reports thread.

And then there were two.

@Roquax & @Tokra - feel free to play a 3rd place game if you want.

Il gran finale, GK contro JJ, giovedì alle 2000 GMT!

I've given some thoughts to this. Don't take this the wrong way, but Armada isn't a game that really works for elimination. The system is designed around mitigating big wins, not glorifying small ones. This is not a criticism of the way you defeated me, BTW. The system in question is designed to reward degrees of success. Beating a single TIE or Z95 is not be sufficient grounds for removing someone from competition at a tournament in a fleet scale game - until you change the format to elimination.

One thing we've seen consistently in streamed big games from the last year or two is that elimination games are everything people hate about Armada. They're slow, boring, there's little combat, and suddenly both players disengage and handshake without really doing anything. There's never a fight to the death at the exact moment when sneaky shenanigans stuff should be finished. Instead, the big crazy risky plays all occur in the first 1-2 matches.

I've played many elimination games. None of them have been boring. Some of them have been tooth and nail fights, some have not. That comes down to how the players decide to play, and what you let your opponent do. Elimination games have more subtlety, and more on the line. Also mitigates matchups in the top tier matches. If you face a counter-fleet due to RNG, you have a better way to win by playing a conservative game, while if you were playing swiss you'd probably just be out of it.

You can obviously have your own opinions, but I strongly disagree with them.

I need to point out that given the scoring system of this game, fleets that don't excel in objective scoring (often involving large squadron elements) are at a tremendous disadvantage already. Further punishing such fleets by mitigating the ability to preserve score by battling out a close game in later rounds ends up giving incentives to the worst play experiences.

My concern comes, ultimately, from the idea that the game is built around clashes of mighty fleets of battleships and support units (flotillas, squadrons, etc) yet punishes those fleets at top end play. A look at elimination rounds indicates that the game actively punishes that pay at the top level. That's not an indictment of you or anyone else playing carefully and conservatively, it's a greater commentary on the current meta that I think ought to change.
