What I learned about scale from playing X-wing and Armada

By Hrathen, in Star Wars: Legion

I have been a FFG fan bo ever since they announced they would be releasing X-wing. My one and only Gen-Con trip got me that game 6 months early. And one thing that popped up on the forums almost immediately (yes, even before the game came out) was speculation on Star Destroyers. They were just so iconically Star Wars that we wanted them even though it was pretty clear that they didn't work with the scale of the game. We had tons of game mods to bring them in. But then... We got Armada. A game that is clearly built around the type of battles that Star Destroyers participate in. Both X-wing and Armada are great games. I'm not saying that I am certain that FFG will release a larger scale ground battle game on a larger scale, but it wouldn't surprise me. And if they do, AT-AT will be so much more fun that it will likely be in Legion. I'm not saying they can't take the game in that direction, but armor right now is pretty binomial, they could give the At-AT a ton of hits an make it armored, but then what kind of weapon do you use against it? It would basically require a weapon that kills everything.

An airspeeder with a wire

I think that if the decide to release an AT-AT/AT-ACT, they should do it as a terrain piece. There are crashed ones seen on Hoth, Jaku, and Scariff. There is also one seen on Endor so it wouldn't be out of place to see a crashed one there as well.

I'm not saying they will ever put an AT-AT into Legion. I just don't think it would be good for the scale, but the armor/hit point problem isn't much of one. That line of assumption assumes you need to kill it. They very well could make a vehicle that isn't going to get killed. ****, the AT-ST is pretty tanky already, and probably will survive most games. The good thing is that you don't need to kill it. You can ion it, or you can ignore it and work the objectives. Huge tanks are going to cost a lot. The question is, will they be worth that cost? It's too early to tell.

I'v been a huge fan of getting anything they want to release, including an AT-AT. Ive crunched the math, checked out its size in scale, everything. But... I think we just got our AT-AT. Look at Veers' command card "Maximum Firepower". One pip, one activation (Veers only). "At the end of General Veers' activation, he may perform an attack using the following weapon:"

Range 4-infinity

4 red attack dice

Impact 2

Immune to Deflect

That... is an AT-AT. And though an AT-AT on the board would be awesome, I'm all in for this way of using Veers thematically.

Yes, that did seem to be exactly what they were going for. It makes sense doing it more as "off table artillery" effectively.

Off-table artillery sounds nice. Heck, if they would go epic format and release an AT-AT some time in the future, i would buy it in an instant, just for decoration purposes.

I personally dont think there will be an armada-pendant for ground battles, but mostly because i can not come up with a decent amount of REALLY large, land based vehicles in the starwars canon . Well, maybe when taking the EU into account.

The biggest in canon are the Juggernaut and AT-AT/variants I believe.

Below that verything is quite considerably smaller.

And I just realised that I want a Juggernaut as a terrain feature...l

A downed one like the one on the BF II Lashyyk map

Yep!

As I have stated before. They will not release an AT-AT for this game. Regardless of sliding scale, it will look silly.

The fact that Veers is being released and is the renouned walker commander yet no sign of any AT-ATs just gives a little more confirmation of that.

As I have stated before. They will release an AT-AT for this game. Because of the sliding scale, it will look just fine.

The fact that General Veers is being released and is the renowned walker commander just gives a little more confirmation of that.

I would still love an AT-AT. In scale (no sliding down), an AT-AT would be just about 18 inches long. Meaning you could fit 4, end to end, across a tournament 6x3 ft board. Its big. But would look amazing.

AT-AT please. I'm fine with some sliding scale to make it more manageable on the table.

I'd even be fine if they do it like the Epic ships in Xwing.

If an AT-AT was added, it would likely be:

Very slow (think limited to range 1 movement)

Very expensive to field.

Rather "tanky"

High damaging

Slow firing (attacks every other turn)

Just my thoughts in the matter.

LOL!!!.......YES!!

A battleship THUMP.....with off table artillery fire.....like the idea. Nothing like naval gunfire to soften up the area BEFORE entry of ground forces. Wunderbar...

I want a central battery of three, with an escort phalanx of at-sts, a fast attack element of speeders or TIEs, maybe some troops. Mostly armor though.

It doesn't look like this game will support that.

Hahaha! No, I think you are quite right and this is DEFINITELY not the right game for that :)

Even at max speed 1, an AT-AT at any scale that wouldn't look silly would be the fastest vehicle in the game. Look at the difference in area covered between an A-Wing and a YT-1300 using the same speed template in X-Wing. Because the base is so large, the YT covers a lot of space, even at lower speeds. An AT-AT that's using a sliding scale but doesn't look like it was made for Lilliputians would have an incredibly large base, and even with the 3-inch (?) length of a Speed 1 template, it would cover a large amount of space, I'd say roughly half the battlefield or more in one move.

Now, they could come up with a special way to move them, like they did with the epic ships in X-Wing, but even then, I still think it would be too big for a 6'x3' area to handle. Then you're talking an epic play mode, which would see limited success, since it wouldn't be usable in tournaments.

The IP is called Star Wars not Land Wars. So there are many space ships from the IP to be added to a game like Armada. A larger scale Land Wars game wouldn't have a lot of expansions.

Everyone wants ATATs. They'll give the people want they want no matter how silly it looks. It just might not go the way you think. :o

Well, that’s manifestly untrue. There’s plenty of people just on this forum that don’t want them, and certainly not if they look silly or overly small.

Id say “everyone wants them” about as much as “everyone wants an SSD” in Armada. It’s a definite split in opinion, and so far years on....no SSD.

AT-ATs are the most recognizable large Imperial armor units, but I just want all manner of Star Wars armored vehicles. Everything from the AT-AT series to AT-MTs, fighter-tanks, juggernauts, Republic Walkers, artillery, and pairs of airspeeeders and one-shot starfighter air support units... all with a smattering of infantry in between. I desire more ground vehicles than infantry dudes... Legion is just more of what we already have now. No game covers Armored ground battles. Legion could have been it.

Well the overwhelmingly majority of armada players on the forums want the ssd so I’m pretty sure it’s the “something big is coming”. There’s a loud and annoying minority that has a negative opinion on it. They should all be shunned.

I left the Armada forum a while back, but it used to be a pretty even split. Probably changed over time as the normal releases got fleshed out, though personally I still think it looks bad in scale, and have yet to see a compelling gameplay argument for it.

Maybe. I e been playing Armada since launch though, and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard “I’m sure it’s coming soon”. Maybe it will this time though, who knows?

I think a clone wars 15mm game would be awesome. Hailfire droids and spider tank droids vs AT-TEs and laats would be so sweet. That said I do think legion delivers something new and exciting and I can't wait to play it. It will be the 40k to imperial assault's space hulk. If you think there is no difference between the two then you are sadly mistaken. Why do we need pubg when call of duty already gives us a shooter game? Why do I need a fuel saver car when pickup trucks exist? Why do we need Star wars when Star trek exists?
