Ancestral Items

By OokamiGauru, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

One of my favorite cards to get in the Old5R were the Ancestral/Celestial/Heavenly/etc items, my deck box that I take with me to games is the Ivory edition boxes with the Ancestral Armor on the back.

Does anyone else hope that we start to see these cards in this version of L5R, since we've already seen Ofushikai in the Phoenix fiction and Yuki in one of the Unicorn fictions.

And maybe the bigger question, is how would they work in this game?

Well they have shown that they want to make these cycle cards.

The Way of cycle
The Seal of cycle

I am sure they will do other cycles of cards, and in that case I am sure we will see the Swords sooner or later, but yeah, the art for the Armors were really solid in Ivory. I use the Spider armor as a computer background currently.

Hopefully not too powerfull. They were quite broken in the old l5r...

Really? Maybe in old old old L5R, because starting with Samurai most of these cards were too expensive to see any play.

Ahh... counter balancing... In those mystical old times, it was impossible to see any deck without those swords... And because they were really rare... well you know the drill.

So far those ancestral cards have not been too good, lets hope that it stays that way.

Swords were only rare because they were the fixed insert in the starter sets for the original printing of the game and since you could only use one of each Unique in the deck in those days most players had only bought one or two of their clan starter so their weren't as many of them in the card pool. As to power level they were a huge boost for one guy but given the all or nothing nature of the game you needed that boost, and if you both had a sword they often washed out. The main advantage they had was in the mirror match where whoever got their sword first would usually win due to the forced honor loss when the sword got played against you. They did reprint "experienced" versions of the Swords that were more available and weren't as powerful at a later stage as well. The rest of the Ancestral Armors and Standards weren't nearly as good as the Swords and didn't see as much play in the early days.

Here the rarity won't be an issue and having a solid Clan specific attachment that grants a thematic bonus could be a good thing. just need to avoid the heavy handed punishment if your

I hope to see the Ancestral Items have an effect that matches the clan themes, such as bringing back the bonus for defending when wearing the Crab armor, or adding to the Glory count for the IF when wearing the Crane armor.

Don't forget the (Stoic, Silver-Tongued, Enigmatic, Implacable, Haughty, Cunning, Swift) Magistrate cycle.

I'm still waiting for the 'miner' cycle: Dopey, Sneezy, Bashful, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Doc.

It would be nice if the Ancestral items were Ancestral.

Dibs on Doc for Phoenix. I'm assuming with card trends thus far, Unicorn are getting Dopey... maybe Sleepy.

I would say bashful, but that is much more fitting for us Scorpions what with our masks.

Doc = Phoenix (keepers of dark knowledge.......and you know Doc's got some stories)

Sleepy = Dragon (don't wake them up!)

Grumpy = Lion (is there anything they aren't angry about?)

Sneezy = Crab (there has got to be something going around near the wall to cause all that shadowlands taint, and what do you expect when you refuse to put a shirt on)

Happy = Scorpion (there is nothing more terrifying than a smiling scorpion)

Bashful = Unicorn (they aren't really filthy barbarians, they are just awkward and shy)

Dopey = Crane (it turns out they are not really fashionable at all. It's one of those 'Emperor's New Clothes' kind of things, but, Crane are just too good at duels for anyone to really tell them how silly they look)

I would have thought:

Doc - Crane (they are the "best" at everything)

Sleepy - Scorpion (always trying to get you to underestimate them)

Grumpy - Crab (have you seen those Berzerkers)

Sneezy - Phoenix (they are the furthest North of the Clans so head colds could be an issue)

Happy - Unicorn (they are normally content with everything and try to get along well with others)

Bashful - Lion (they're only striking out because of how shy they are)

Dopey - Dragon (because no one understands what they are saying)
