New Expansions

By Animewarsdude, in Star Wars: Legion

Or Rieekan.

Ouch... $13 for Veers and some cards. IA single figure packs are at least $10, which isn’t terrible.

Awesome! I'm especially excited to see a new commander expansion, both to get an idea of what we can expect for other commander expansions and also because new commander units quickly add a lot more variety to possible army builds.

Well, theoretically its a higher quality miniature than IA, right? Or at least slightly bigger? I'm just happy we don't have to spend $25. Isn't that how much hero units cost in Runewars? (Granted I think those all come with 2 different sculpts, but still)

Pretty cool, I wonder if this is all Wave one or if this will come out later in quarter one

The heroes in Runewars come monuted and unmounted, a large scenery base and the special base for moving. $13 isn’t bad at all.

Can anyone tell the unit costs? My eyes are not quite sharp enough, but it looks like General Veers is 80 points? Or is that 60?

Really excited to see some new keywords too, like Spotter, Sharpshooter, and Guardian.

The Esteemed Leader card seems to be a way to have bodyguard-style units for squishier commanders, so that's cool.

The sense I get is that this game won't have "waves" like X-Wing or Imperial Assault, where a huge amount of new content is released at once, followed by months of silence. Content for this will be more of a constant trickle, with one or two packs a month being relased (hopefully keeping the meta constantly fresh).

That being said, I doubt these are releasing along side the other announced expansions, but I guess it isn't impossible. Seems very unlikely though.

It looked like a "9" to me... which means it more likely an "8" than a "6" if we put our logic together.

Lets go with 80 for now? haha.

Snowtroopers and Veers, oh my!

i would still guess they are considered "waves". Wave 1 being the sets we have seen previously that should be available day one. This would be the first of Wave 2, which could be Veers/Snow troopers and their rebel equivalent that will be out shortly after Wave one. Wave 2 would expand into heavy, support, and special forces, so there is one of each troop type in each wave, they just wouldn't be released at the same time like other games.

Let's talk about Snowtroopers! They lose one speed and Precise 1, but they gain the very useful ability Steady. I can't quite read the price--it looks like 48 maybe??

Interestingly, even though the Snowtroopers are slow, they are better at mobile combat than Stormtroopers are. Two 1-speed moves is further than one 2-speed move. Thus, a Snowtrooper doing Move+Move+Attack(w/ steady) will cover more ground than a Stormtrooper doing Move+Attack. Also, Snowtroopers have the option to make a more cautious advance with Aim(or Dodge or Rally)+Move+Attack(w/ steady). Furthermore, the Snowtrooper special weapons are more focused on close-range (1-2 and 1 ranges) than the Stormtrooper special weapons (1-4 and 2-4 ranges).

As you would expect from Vader's Fist, Snowtroopers make a great accompaniment for Darth Vader, since they can all make a Move1+Move1+free Attack every turn. I could see a valid tactic would be to have a fire base of regular Stormtroopers soften up a position with their DLT-19, and then Vader and/or Snowtroopers would charge in. I think of Snowtroopers as filling the combat engineer role--move in aggressively with flamethrowers and grenades! In fact, I am considering painting them as combat engineers, since I don't have any plans to make a Hoth board.

That hasn't been the case with Rune Wars, which seems to be the distribution model that Legion is based on. Calling them waves gets pretty silly when you have eight or so distinct groups of releases in the first year alone. It just isn't a useful way to track or refer frequent, small releases.

That's not too bad at all, but i'm coming from 40k and GW stuff...so to be honest that Veers is an easy buy for me.

Plus you only buy one Veers, whereas you may buy 2 or more of the snow troopers. So you don’t quite get the same scale of ecomies.

lets not forget the absolute maximum you need is 6 snow troopers units for competitive play ( and even then it's unlikely you'll see a list using all 6)

Edit: well, there were some rumblings and complaints about imp mobility and cost being an issue, these 2 expansions definitely fix that. Running veers as commander gives you a nice big command bubble and action economy for moving troops, at the cost of being relatively weaker to suppression than we have seen.

Rebel commanders and armor had better watch out for that 1 pip command though. range 4+ 4 reds, impact2 and it ignores deflect? It will likely put him at a disadvantage later for initative orders but a good roll is enough to put a hero/atrt or snowspeeder on the defensive all game. That's huge......

I think Snowtroopers might become the bulk of my army, they look so badass!

I'm thinking up a universal base scheme so I'll be able to mix units around while still keeping them looking cohesive.

I wonder if it will be possible to get the custom clear bases with some of those notches, now that the bigger bases will need the movement tool inserted.

Fingers crossed.

Snowtroopers seem like a decided sidegrade vs. Stormtroopers so they're probably skippable for those of us that value a consistent look. Veers though... yeah, nice to have a proper groundpounder commander rather than a saber swinger.

Ohhhh this has got me excited now ! please dont push this game back FFG

If anything these being Q1 also, means the main game is on target for February at a guess and March for these. So if nothing else these bode well.

I guess if the give the Rebels the same theme they will get Echo base troopers

I hope they call them something else... I think echo base troopers is so specific it makes it weird to see them in other battles. Any Ideas out there? Maybe Ice troopers, or simply Echo troopers?

Cold weather Troopers.

I'm kind of thinking there should have been someway/ugrade of having Veers commanding from inside an AT-ST

Does the Steady ability mean they can move, shoot, move, shoot?
