Will we see a third edition soon?

By EpicBubbleSA, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Given how successful the Legends App has been, do you think we will see a third edition of Descent Pop up soon? Imperial Assault had quality of life changes done to the system and the modelling process and quality has increased dramatically since its 2012 release. With a ton of expansions out, it is quite unwieldy

Is it time for a 3rd edition where the game is built with the app already in mind?

I am hoping we don't see a 3rd edition, but rather another box set using some of the themes and miniatures from the Runewars Game (Elves, Ulthuk, etc), and some expansions to the RtL app, like another campaign centered around the Labryinth of Ruin, and maybe some smaller campaigns (similar to Rise of All Goblins) of 1-2 missions, centered around the small box sets like Lair of the Wyrm.

Yes, RtL IS the third edition of Descent and if they continue the current pattern we're due for a campaign.

Hopefully not. At least in the next 10 years.

10 years is a ridiculously long time to not have another edition update.

Personally I think we will see a completely new 3rd edition next year. I don't think there will be a conversion put out this time either. Just a clean break from the old to the new.

I am hopefully they bring out a new edition soon after seeing the success of Gloomhaven. Even with the app it still pretty imposing for new players who want to get into the game. I imagine a 3rd edition could be a chance to expand on the Terranoth lore that is being built on with legacy of dragonholt and runewars.

Since that will be 16 years from the last? Sure. Then again:

Runebound-

1st ed 2004

2nd ed 2005 (there were problems with first ed so this was quick)

3rd. ed 2016

Descent-

1st ed 2005

2nd ed 2012

3rd ed...?

If we're using past intervals as an indicator, 2020-2022 wouldn't be out of character for FFG, which is still another 2-4 years.

Perhaps my numbers are huge, but as Zaltyre said, there's nothing unreal about 10 years period.

I would bet that next year or 2019 will see that new ed. Thwy will use army squads, tournaments.. its just so profitable.

What I am REALLY HOPING for is a real conversion kit.

something that we would buy instead of a -very expensive- core set. If we dont get one, ill be out of descent :(

I don't ever see a conversion kit happening again. First off the Hero and Monster collections proved they can actually sell you the old content again and people will buy it. Second if they are making a new edition it's probably in their best interests to have a clean break from the current edition. No lingering expectations about what the game should be.

It's not like your current edition of the game stops working though. Personally I think I'd prefer it that way so I don't have my different editions mixed together like I do currently.

Totally agree in that financially the conversion kit is not appealing for th3 authors - at first glance.

I dont see what the problem would be if there is a convrersion kit that would bring all there is in the new game except miniatures. For example.

I have spent over 500 usd in descent. Add another 100 usd and hundreds of hours painting minis. I dont like the idea of not using them inthe new game, nor using them as a bad expansion (i.e. current kit will give you more choice of heroes at the start of a campaign, the other dozens of heroes just sit in the box for the rest of such campaign)

I'd really luke FGG to be more .. how to put this? Ethical, whe. It comes to temting the consumer. Just look at their cgg where they.. make players buy THREE times the base product in order to play! They could just make a 'bigger' and less expensive core set you know. They simply choose not to

Anyways, im voicing this now in hopes descent gets even better. There are too many great competitors out there, a reset kind of new edition may be exactly what could kill this game

I'm of the opinion that a 2nd-to-3rd edition conversion is a bad idea. Either the game could do with a makeover (in which case it's best to leave the old abilities behind) or the game is good enough as is (in which case a 3rd edition is little more than a way to stir up interest). A 3rd edition with a conversion kit is (in my opinion) too middle of the road. If there's going to be a 3rd edition, I'd rather the effort is put into it to really make it distinct from the second edition (possibly as distinct as the 2nd edition is from the original Descent).

I have invested >$1,000 CAD in Descent 2nd ed., purchasing it all and paying for professional painting, I just got into it in the last 2 years. I will not buy a 3rd ed. if it's not pre-painted or I they release a conversion kit.

I hear you, and I'm still in the process of painting everything, no way I'm going to immediately jump into a new edition. In fact, if I knew how much it would have ended up costing, I'd probably not have bought into it. I'm very careful now with FFG's products (in general). Big box expansions are fine, but I hate those micro transactions payments (H&M packs and lieutenant packs). I know myself to be a completionist, so that's a dangerous combination. I'll most likely not buy into a 3rd edition, assuming that the same marketing techniques are being applied. The moment that those small overpriced packages are starting to appear, that's a red flag for me.

The scale of the Runewars Miniature Game is just like the last characters from Heroes and Monster Collection. so yes, i think it will all come again, just a bit bigger. plus counters to throw in the air !

Yeah I went a little crazy with Descent and Imperial Assault as soon as App rumours popped up.

It's hard enough getting all of the expansions for the 2nd Edition; all of the board game shops in Toronto seem perpetually sold-out of Shadows of Nerekhall. 2nd Edition stuff is still selling well, it seems (the expansions, hero and monster collections and lieutenant packs always in the reprint list on FFG's site). I'd just like more campaigns available on the Road to Legend app, and some more expansions or monster packs. Still, I probably would eventually break down and buy a 3rd Edition if they did put one out.

Yeah, sometimes I got the feeling that we were getting 2nd string monsters such as barghests instead of hellhounds and ettins instead of giants. Not sure I want to see what the 3rd string looks like...

The impression I have is that the app is basically edition 2.5 and Imperial Assault is functionally 3rd edition.

I don't think we'll see an official 3rd edition descent until Imperial Assault stops selling / goes out of print, because it seems like those two lines compete for production time / development resources.

If 3rd did come out sometime soon I doubt I'd buy in because I already have all of 2nd edition at this point and it's a nice feeling to have the complete set. It would have to make some really major gameplay improvements and 2nd edition is good enough that it only has limited room to improve. They could incorporate some lessons from Gloomhaven and use hex-based tiles and so forth I suppose?

But Descent has hellhounds and giants also?

He means that the monsters included with second edition were a knockoff of the monsters in first edition. The second string monsters basically, poor copies of the good ones.

I refuse to call that Stupid Wars stuff as Descent 3e. Descent is Descent, Terrinoth and all. Unless you call Descent 1e as Doom 2e?

I used to do that actually. Settings and art are just the fluff for the mechanics. Doom/Descent/Imperial Assault are all just a really complicated version of Chess to me.

I would acknowledge both games as good games if FFG gave both equal love. How it is right now though, it's like FFG abandoned their own child to raise someone else's famous child. Pretty horrible, if you ask me.

The monsters in the boxes are new. The ones in the hero and monster collections are recycled from Descent 1st edition for those who don't have it and the conversion kit. So the question is how many of your favorite monsters are from the H&M collections....
