Putting a daemon into a force weapon....

By Lucifer216, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Hi all,

This situation came up recently in my group when I gave one of the players the option of replacing his trice-blessed chainsword with the same quality chainsword with a minor daemon in it, to represent his character's embrace of radicalism and because as a fallen priest, he would probably suffer from some degree of self-hatred and not want such a holy weapon to be defiled. Instead he handed me his character sheet to inspect, still with the holy chainsword and now with a daemonically possessed force staff.

Needless to say I was not impressed. As the GM I ruled that the two traits are effectively incompatible. While the rules do not say that you can't put a daemon into a force weapon, this is a bad idea for two reasons:

1) Mechanically, you'd be getting the bonuses of your character's WP and that of the daemon to both damage and pen. You'd also have the force weapon's ability and those of the daemon weapon stacking. This is obviously not a good thing in terms of game balance.

2) A Force weapon only works because it is made of the finest psychically-conducting materials known. If it allows the psyker to channel psychic energy into it, it follows that psychic energy (daemonic essence) could easily flow through the blade and into the psyker's mind, leaving him utterly open to possession.

What are your thoughts on this?

The first time the psyker tried to channel destructive psychic energy through the weapon, I could only imagine the daemon bound to it going " oh shi-" before being blasted back into the warp, or out of existence entirely.

Or the weapon breaks and the vengeful daemon may burst out hungry for revenge.

Or the daemon strikes at a moment of weakness and possesses the Psyker.

Regardless, it won't work as it's meant to. I agree, no daemon force weapons. Daemon weapons that can have the bound daemon do a similar effect but not the psyker? Sure.

If my player did that I'd hand it back to him with balck texter on it and the daemon sword on it, I agree that it is completely lacking in mechanical balance and it would instead be dangerous to the player.

I think though you made a mistake maybe I didnt read you post right but... as DM you should have deliberately had him remove the sword ingame and then given him a sword ingame - even if it was in down time -> any time you hand the controll of buying exotic items to the PC they will try this on you.

Trust me when I say this because my party do it all the time and rightly so as they are trying to get the most for themselves, even when I was playing and keeping it in the rules and only buying normal items my GM got ticked cos I used the grio gloves as I win buttons for flamers in each hand :) .

Actually, this incident lead me to kick the player from the group as he flat out refused to accept my refusal to allow him to take a weapon that I didn't offer him or my right as GM to rule on such matters. He also was adamant that the Dark fire daemon weapon ability allows it to throw bolts of fire (when it does no such thing). As this came right after I had bent over backwards to keep his character still playable (after some sorcerous mishaps led to the rest of the party turning on him) and the fact the player in question has a history of being intensely disruptive, it was quite clear that things had reached a point where there was no other option.
