The One Ring

By Lorne, in Genesys

So I'm trying to make a one-shot adaptation. Presently stuck on Career skills for PCs, specifically converting TOR Callings to Careers. The Scholar and Treasure Hunter are (mostly) straightforward. The Wanderer is a bit of a challenge, and the Slayer and Warden are really hard to settle on. Unfortunately, the fluff text in TOR for the Callings is rather sparse. Having a hard time groking the difference between Slayer and Warden conceptually and then translating that to skills. Any advice would be helpful.

This sounds like a fun idea. I'm not too well versed in TOR - never got around to test it with anyone.

Mechanically, what are callings? How do they come into play? What do they affect? How do they guide a player, and her/his character?

One thing is skill determination, and perhaps talents (I know there have been changes made to how this works compared to Star Wars) ... but how about callings having unique flaws or some obligation or duty like mechanic tied into them? In addition to or instead of the standard options...

I may be way off in what you're looking for. I'm no TOR nor Genesys expert... I like the idea though.

Slayer sounds a lot like a Marauder from the Star Wars game, someone who wields massive Weapons and liberates heads from their enemies:

Athletics, Brawl, Coercion, Melee Heavy, Survival, Resilience, Vigilance.

the 8th Skill is tricky, it depends on your personal preference. Choose from Melee Light, Discipline and Streetwise.

Warden sounds like a defender, someone who protects and patrols:

Cool, Discipline, Leadership, Melee Heavy, Melee Light, Perception, Riding, Survival .

You could perhaps exchange Melee Heavy or Survival for Ranged depending on your particular preferences.

The Wanderer could be a match for the Explorer career. I'm a huge fan of the D&D Ranger class, and the Wanderer seemed to be a decent match when I was fooling around with TOR. I used the Explorer as a start for my Genesys ranger, too.

People think of two things when they think ranger, either a hunter (i.e., woodsman type) or borderer (i.e., someone that patrols the edge of civilization). To me, the Wanderer is more of the former while the Warden is more of the latter. Both have similar skills, though their focus is slightly different.

Responding because this is the first indication I have found of anyone building a Tolkien setting. I'd love to hear what you've come up with, as my group is all dying to play in Middle Earth.
