I want to get into Armada: But where do I start?

We've got some decent recommendations overall already. My contribution would be to ask you to take a look at the "welcome/Armada 101" index at the blog @geek19 and I write, Cannot Get Your Ship Out. If you're looking to go more Imperial (the Mon Cal ships are great for Rebels, I'm not sure you could play without them and still find the faction fresh after a while), I have some recommendations on a starter fleet geared towards giving you different ship types to try out. Otherwise, I'd recommend checking the indices for write-ups on just about whatever.

I highly recommend this. I just started playing myself and went with the alternate budget imperial fleet on that site. if you can afford the investment(I dropped about 230 total, including an extra dice pack and a tourney entry fee. ymmv) you get a 400 point list that is decent, fun to fly, and let's you try flying a variety of ships. And the site has a lot of good info.

Buy what you feel like. If you love the game, you'll likely buy everything eventually. But if you want a list, mine's somewhere in between @dominosfleet and @Church14's.

ISD first. It's the quickest way to field a 400 point fleet, it can be good at anything and it's a little easier to start out with a real monster in your fleet, as you have fewer ships to coordinate. 1 or 2 squadron packs second, a Light Cruiser third because it's a self contained expansion (you don't need other cards, just DTT and RBD work fine) and comes with Jerjerrod, who works really well with every ship. After that point, one expansion is generally as good as any other.

As mentioned above, Cannot Get Your Ship Out is a treasure trove for anyone starting out. Also, if you want some options for fleet builders, here are two favorites:

To add to his great point about fleet builders, if you're an android user there's a fleet builder app on android called "armada fleet designer". it's a semi pain to get your hands on because it's not in the google play store or amazon's store anymore(blah blah blah copy right even though xwing is on there). If you google it a google+ page should be near the top with the app.

This "should" be the link but I'm at work so i can't check myself. it was at the top when i just google searched it though.

I absolutely agree with the recommendations of the Cannot Get Your Ship Out blog as well as reviewing the Star Wars Armada Wiki

Play some games before you spend big $, so you get an idea of what rules do what and how they work together. Then read up on those sites so you can make educated purchases. With some knowledge and experience it's very possible to get a good core collection for under $200 USD (including the Core set and factoring everything at full MSRP).

What exactly you choose to buy is going to be based on your preferences, of course. When I got into the game I devoured those sites and made some very informed purchases, and while now I have almost everything and multiples of others, I have found the ships I started with still get the most table time and still bring me the most joy to play with.

As far as understanding how certain ships work, i recommend watching gameplay videos if you have the time. Master of the Fleet on youtube is a good one to see as they keep you in the loop with whats going on rather than just letting a camera roll from 5 feet away and you cant hear anything.

Also, buy order:

ISD

Gladiator

Arquitens

Fighter Packs (1 of each imperial and rogues and villains)

Raider

Quasar

Gozantis

Interdictor

Victory

You really need ships more than squads to field a proper fleet, so I put the 3 best ship packs first and followed it up with squadrons. then get the raider for antisquad or carriers if your isd and vic arent sufficient or you want more options. Interdictor last because while its not awful its not great either. And the the victory. Motti is nice, but someone probably has an extra copy of him they can give you and unless you want another vic i cant think of a real reason to buy the pack off the top of my head.

One difference between Armada and X-Wing is the commanders. And while some commanders don't really care about what's in your fleet, others definitely do. For example, Screed really likes black dice ships - Gladiators and Raiders. So it might be useful to pick a commander that you think will suit your play style and build from there.

I've built up a 400 point list of fast black dice ships (2 Gladiators and 3 Raiders) to work with Screed and Ozzel, and 2 ISDs with some fighters for another 400 point list to work with Vader, Motti etc.

Also if you're thinking about 2 ISDs, get 1 now and then wait for the Chimaera as it'll give you lots of new options.

Gents. i need quick advice. I currently have ISD in my basket and pondering whether to add Imperial Squadron 1 or Gladiator. Any recommendations, please?

If you want a 400 pt fleet, the squads will get you more pts, but the glad is also good. Pick either or both.

Bought ISD and fighter squad. ;)

PS. When will Chimera arrive?

No one knows. I assume Q1 if the french site is to be believed.
