I want to get into Armada: But where do I start?

By KCDodger, in Star Wars: Armada

Core set obviously.

But I REALLY want to know what else I should buy? I'm sure that the core set isn't enough to really get a good feel for this game. Also, is it a bit simpler than modern X-Wing? There's so much extra stuff in X-Wing now that it's really hard to keep track of what's what.

Definitely think I'd be geared towards Imperials, but I'm very open to Rebels. Even if I don't actually like Mon Calamari ships.

who /where would you play?

get a game or two with just the core set first then borrow the ships off people ....

also... build a fleet http://armada.fabpsb.net/gindex.php and find out what expansions you'd need for it.

No offense @slasher956, but captain ignore his advice for 2 seconds.

Are you going to play casual wi th friends or aim to get into tournaments?

If your going for competitive, follow slashers advice, build a fleet, borrow ships, get some games in and buy the ships you need to fly that fleet.

If your going casual however, play and buy/borrow the ships you live the most, build fleets around those ships and gradually buy up a collection.

The competitive player builds fleets and buys ships to fly them. The casual player buys the ships then builds fleets with what he has.

Oh and

Well yeah. Casual play, can't get into where-is-my-deodorant-stick levels of sweaty play without knowing the rules first.

Ooooh neat. Where would I get a good idea of what these ships do, though? As stupid as that question may indeed sound.

I would recommend starting off with one or two solid expansions for the faction of your choice, then play some games and figure out what kind of playstyle you like.

For instance, if you want to play Empire, I would recommend Fighter Squadrons I and the Arquitens-class. Both of these expansions are very useful- almost any list will need something from the first fighters pack.

Hope this helps!

thats a hard question.... its a mix of

Thats a hard question... if you look through this forum you will see write ups on individual ships but as its a case of a mix of speed /yaws + arcs (sizes & direction) + dies in arcs + upgrade slots its a case of getting a couple of games in with some ships and seeing the 'oh I could have done x'. & seeing what upgrades work for you.

This is why I said about borrowing ships off people as the shape of the arcs do change on the card, so proxing different ships is hard*, apart from that as you only play casually make a list on fabs /warlord you can print it off with the cards.

*makes creating a shopping list a bit more of a science than my wallet likes :P

Very loosely, and with the caveat that upgrades can often be used in a unique way to make ships perform other roles, I think of the ships like this:

Brawlers: Gladiator Star Destroyer, MC30C, Raider Corvette, Hammerhead Corvette

Snipers: Imp Light Cruiser (Arquitens), CR90 Corvette, Nebulon, MC80 Liberty

Tanks: MC80 Home One, Assault Frigate Mk 2, ISD, VSD

Specialists: Pelta, Interdictor, Quasar Fire

Pocket Carrier/Activation Padding: Gozanti, Medium Transports

We've got some decent recommendations overall already. My contribution would be to ask you to take a look at the "welcome/Armada 101" index at the blog @geek19 and I write, Cannot Get Your Ship Out. If you're looking to go more Imperial (the Mon Cal ships are great for Rebels, I'm not sure you could play without them and still find the faction fresh after a while), I have some recommendations on a starter fleet geared towards giving you different ship types to try out. Otherwise, I'd recommend checking the indices for write-ups on just about whatever.

Oh, thats an easy one to answer. "Whatever you want."
Each ship is going to bring its own Thing to the table. Some are good at mitigating squadrons, some just beat the bejesus out of whatever is in front of it.
Each ship also brings along upgrades and doodads that can be used on most any other ship. No matter what you get, you'll find something you can use.

Now that right there is helpful, and I'm extremely glad the Arquitens is considered a "Sniper", as I have always preferred low-to-mid size vessels and long range tactics. Ya' think a pair of those and an ISD is a good squad?

Captain, Barnes and Noble is running Armada at 50% off....and yes, ISDs are the bomb in coolness; Vader as the Commander ?

if you're going Imp's then

(after core)

1st: 1 ISD

2nd: 2 packs of Imperial pack 1(if you can find them, they aren't "vital" but they're good)

3rd: a gladiator, be that person

4th: a quasar, sloan is great and the ship is a good fighter mover

5th: a light cruiser (the Arc, maybe 2 or 3 of them as you go, they tend to pair well but they're not a main force, solid support).

At that point you're fine. Honestly if you really get into the game you'll eventually have everything because that's kind of the way the game is but it's also pretty affordable. I've ended up with excessively large fleets on both sides and, having come from other gaming systems like 40k/wmh it's no where near the money dump they are.

Side note, there's another thread on this but right now Barnes and Noble is having a crazy sale on their armada stuff(clearancing it out), swing by there if you have one local to get some stuff on the cheap.

Literally the best way to field them.

Whoa where!? I checked the site and I'm pulling up nothing, GOTTA take advantage of that'un.

RAD. Looks like all that time playing Empire at War will pay off, then.

i don't think they're discounted on the site, just in store. check to see if they have anything local, they're similar to borders if you're familiar with that chain that died 5 or 6 years back. I think they're only state side and there aren't too terribly many of them so it might be rough to find one but maybe worth the search.

Neat. I'll check that out, thank you for the heads up.

First: Get Corellian Conflict and one each of both Imperial squadron packs. That sets you up for a long time with squadrons.

Second: Ship order:

ISD

Arquitens

Raider

Quasar/Interdictor

VSD Pack.

Last, and only last, get a Demolisher. The package says Gladiator, but it is called Demolisher. It’s an awesome ship that’s fun to play that comes with a stupid powerful title. That title is a fun black hole. Save it for when you decide to start competitions. You will also be a much better Imp player for never learning to lean on Demolisher as an Imperial.

Also, I recommended smaller ships after the ISD as the Imperial fleet just looks... right... with a centerpiece ISD and support ships

I have a Gladiator, just haven’t matted it yet ?

This.

You could always do what I did and buy everything, and multiple squadron packs.
