Help to get back into the game

By Haelberd, in X-Wing

Hey there, all! o/

So it's been awhile since I've played X-Wing, and I've been meaning to go down to the my FLGS for the first time in awhile and fly some ships. But given my fleet is Waves I-V (minus Decimator, Defender, and B-Wing) plus Aces and both Cores, I rather imagine my knowledge is bit outdated, and unprepared for most of the stuff in the last couple years worth of ships (I do have some familiarity with Wave 6, and have seen some JumpMasters being flown).

While I imagine I'm just going to have to go down, fly something, probably lose, but then prepare better for the next time, I was wondering if people had any advice for what I should look out for, and maybe some suggestions for building out a list or two to take down with me. I always used to like trying to fly things like A/X/E wings, dunno if that's still practical. Also don't mind spending up to 30-40USD to get a ship or two to update my fleet, if that's likely to be particularly helpful.

Thanks! :)

Do you prefer a faction?

Well, I do not yet own any Scum ships, but between Imperials and Rebels, my preference has been Rebel.

Poe Dameron with Advanced Optics is pretty good as is Jess Pava with a couple of A-wings - both T70 X-Wings if that’s the X you’re looking for.

You should definitely check out the newest FAQ.

You know about as much as anyone at the moment - we've just had a couple of big releases and the game is in a massive state of flux.

If you don't mind proxying then there are plenty of interesting squads you can build with the ships you have. Maybe get a Sheathipede if you want to stick to rebels.

PS9 Poe(from Heroes of the Resistance) is almost mandatory for Rebels, as is Quickdraw (in a TIE /sf, wave 9) for Imperials. However, we don't really know how good Kylo/the Silencer will be, so Quickdraw might lose her spot.

My two favorite lists at the moment are Poe+Jake+Ezra (wave 12), and Vader+Quickdraw+Omega Leader or Sabacc (TIE Striker, wave 10). But both use plenty of cards from all throughout the game.

  • Poe + VI + Advanced Optics (Wave 13) + Autothrusters (either Starviper wave 6, or Silencer wave12) + Black One (HotR) + BB8 (TFA core)
  • Jake (Rebel Aces) + Testpilot(Rebel Aces) + VI + Push the Limit (A-Wing) + Autothrusters (see above) + Cruise missile (Scurrg wave11, or Gunboat wave 12)
  • Ezra (wave 12) + R3-A2 (Rebel Transport) + Gunner (Slave1/YT2400) + Adaptability (Mist Hunter, wave 8)

The other list:

  • Vader (wave 1) + VI + Cruise missile (Scurrg wave11, or Gunboat wave 12) + Engine Upgrade (Millennium Falcon) + Title&ATC (both Imperial Raider)
  • Quickdraw (wave 9) + VI + Harpoons (guns for hire) + Lightweight frame (TIE striker wave 9, or TIE aggressor wave 11) + Advanced Optics (wave 13) + title (with the SF) + Fire control system (B-Wing or TIE Phantom)
  • Omega Leader (TIE FO expansion, wave 8) + A score to settle (quadjumper, wave 10)

that's a lot of different ships to get those lists though

I think the best investment if it wasn’t already there will be Heroes if the Resistance. Rey is a solid falcon pilot, and ps9 Poe is awesome.

I'm currently flying a Poe and Dash list that I really like - trying to work it out and see if it’s going to be my Regionals/System Open list or not.

on the imperials, tie SF, tie striker, tie silencer and gunboat are all solid investments. The SF really wants the mod that comes with striker, but the striker also makes a good point filler when you’ve spent a little too much on the other pilots but don’t want to change it.

For Rebels:

First pick is easily Heroes of the Resistance for rebels. It has both Rey Crew, Rey Pilot and Poe Pilot, the internal astromech cards, the new Falcon Title and Smuggling Compartments.

Then the Ghost would be the next on my list. The ghost itself is pretty decent, the crew that comes with it is pretty awesome.

Next, buy something with Autothrusters in it! I would say the Tie Silencer.

Then finally the Force Awakens Core Set.

From there you should have a good idea where to go.

While I agree, especially on HotR and Silencer, keep in mind that this is pretty far above OPs 30-40$

I missed that part.

Definitely Heroes of the Resistance than. Just too much good there for a rebel player.

I second the HotR. Yeah it’s MSRP is $50, but you can probably find it on sale somewhere. EDIT: never mind, it’s $40.

The main reason why though is for the Integrated Astromechs, which take X-Wings from “auto-lose” status to “should fair well enough in casual play” status.

As for things to watch out for... be prepared for ordinance and bombs (which were both pretty crappy during the wave 1-4 era) to rip you to pieces now. Other than that, I think you nailed it on the head. Your best bet is to just dive in head first and expect to lose for the first few weeks until you get the hang of the new hotness.

If you like Rebels you should know that you can only use Bigg's ability once per game. As in for an entire round of your choosing his ability is on, then you can't use it anymore.

Also Auzituck Gunships are really good. Lowrick is an alternative way of protecting your ships like Biggs

Dash/Miranda is really good too. Advanced SLAM was changed to where you can only AS into an action on your action bar.

The new Phantom II is looking pretty good.

Not sure about the proxying without going down. They do a fortnightly tournament though, rather suspect that proxying wouldn't be okay for that though.

I do actually have the TFA Core Set, unless you meant I should get a second.

Certainly seems I could do with getting HotR, and well, something with Autothrusters (though I sorta knew I'd need to get something with that anyway). The $40 would be a more immediate re-buyin for a first game, and I totally intend to get more things, just in subsequent pay packets :P

Where I am, only storechamps and regionals (and higher) care about it. Everything else is completely fine with proxying (and for those tournaments we lend cards to each other all the time, which kind of defeats the rule...)

Huh, okay. I guess I still wouldn't want to rely on it, but I guess that doesn't prevent me prepping a few lists, with and without proxies, and finding out when I go down.

Best thing is to get in touch, I guess. Ask the store owner, and maybe they have a forum.

But having several lists handy might also be a good idea, just in case.

I's also go with Heroes of the Resistance. if not that, then a sheathipede shuttle and an Azituk gunship. Since you favor rebels. Out of curiosity, where are you located?

Welcome back!

Yeah, I'd also go for Heroes of the Resistance. Rey/Poe makes a really nice list that's very powerful as well as thematically good. And pretty much everything you need for it is in that box. I liked Episode VIII enough that I'm thinking of trying that list out as well!

South Australia actually.

Nice! I'm from Adelaide. Where's your local?

The Hobby Matrix would be the one.

Ah cool. Jump on the A-wing Adelaide facebook group.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/AdelaideXWing/

They should be able to help you out with details on what the norm is for their events casual or otherwise.

Gametraders Marion, Infinity Games in the City, and Table Top Warfare in Gawler all have active X-wing groups as well.

As for the ships, definitely grab Heroes of the Resistance if it fits your budget. It's probably the best stand alone expansion in the game right now.

If you went for Imperials I'd say grab a TIE/fo and TIE/sf pack. They are both good ships and come with some great cards.
